2. A lightweight sweater
A fine or otherwise lightweight sweater adds warmth without requiring a full outfit change. Wear it over a summer top or with trousers and skirts already in your rotation. Look for a layer that sits comfortably beneath your jacket and feels suitable indoors as well as outside; heavier knitwear can wait until the weather calls for it.
3. A cardigan or removable mid-layer

4. A long-sleeved cotton top or foundational shirt
A long-sleeved cotton top or versatile shirt gives you a simple base for a cardigan, jacket or scarf. COS highlights foundational shirts in its capsule-wardrobe guidance. Choose one that works with your existing trousers, skirts or dresses rather than buying a new outfit around it.
5. A flannel shirt for a warmer layer

6. Trousers or jeans that work across seasons
Autumn preparation does not automatically mean buying new bottoms. First see whether your current trousers or jeans pair comfortably with the layers and footwear you plan to wear. COS and British Vogue both frame the seasonal wardrobe around combinations of versatile pieces, not wholesale replacement. Buy a new pair only if you have a practical gap, such as a fit or weight that does not suit cooler days.
7. Boots suited to your weather and routine

8. A scarf or tights to extend existing outfits
A scarf can add a light layer to a summer outfit, while tights can make some skirts and dresses more comfortable as temperatures fall. M&S mentions both as autumn additions. Choose the option that solves a real wardrobe problem: neither is essential if you do not wear the outfits they are meant to extend.

9. A throw blanket, if you also want a home comfort

A practical way to edit the list
- Check what you already own, especially shirts, knitwear and trousers that can be layered or recombined.
- Identify the gap that affects your real routine, such as rain protection, a removable warm layer or footwear suited to local conditions.
- Prioritize pieces that work with several existing outfits, then defer items that duplicate something you already wear.
