As quoted in the article, Sugiyama said: “It is possible to press-fit the jewels directly into CFRP, but metal bushings provide stronger and more secure positioning both horizontally and vertically.” The design choice illustrates the central engineering trade-off: using a composite for structural parts while preserving metal interfaces where secure positioning and contact matter.

Why the “first carbon-fiber watch movement” label needs context
Microbrand Watch World presents the CP-02 as notable for using CFRP in multiple movement bridges and describes it as the first carbon-fiber watch movement. The article does not provide a comprehensive historical survey, so that priority claim should be attributed to the publication rather than treated as independently established fact.
The distinction is also about where the material is used. A watch with carbon composite in its case or dial is not necessarily using it in movement structures. For the CP-02, the reported significance is the use of CFRP for selected structural components inside the movement; metal remains part of the assembly.

What is known about CP-01 and CP-02?
The article describes CP-01 as Sugiyama’s earlier proof of concept and CP-02 as a revision shaped by durability and serviceability concerns.
