AVI-8’s Bell X-1 collection honors the aircraft Chuck Yeager flew on the first airplane flight faster than sound. The name “Glamorous Glennis” belonged to Yeager’s aircraft, not a verified current watch SKU. What does “Glamorous Glennis” refer to?
Glamorous Glennis was the Bell X-1 experimental aircraft piloted by U.S. Air Force Capt. Charles “Chuck” Yeager. Yeager named the aircraft in tribute to his wife. On October 14, 1947, he flew it to the first airplane flight faster than sound: the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum records the achievement as Mach 1.06, or 700 mph, at 43,000 feet. The X-1 was rocket-powered and air-launched from a Boeing B-29. It had a single engine, one seat, a mid-wing layout and an international orange paint scheme. The museum says it flew 78 times.
The X-1’s later record was a separate milestone
The 1947 flight was the first airplane flight faster than sound. It was not the X-1’s highest speed or altitude. On March 26, 1948, the aircraft reached Mach 1.45 (957 mph) at 71,900 feet. The Smithsonian describes that as the highest velocity and altitude reached by a manned airplane up to that time. The aircraft is now in the National Air and Space Museum collection.

AVI-8’s official Bell X-1 collection includes Machbuster automatic watches and Machbuster chronographs. When accessed on October 7, 2026, the page showed 12 products, with seven marked in stock and five sold out; displayed prices for the in-stock examples ranged from $209 to $239, with higher original listed prices. Those are a dated snapshot, not a promise of current availability or price.
