Robert-Jan Broer’s March 11, 2015 Fratello article presented the Baume & Mercier Classima as an accessible first mechanical watch and a dressier everyday option. Classima remains an active collection, but the 2015 models, specifications and prices should not be mistaken for current ones.
What “smart watch” means in this title
The phrase is rhetorical: the article was about choosing a traditional mechanical watch, not a device with smartphone connectivity, notifications or apps. Its argument was that a Classima could offer a formal design and mechanical movement at a more approachable point in Baume & Mercier’s range. That is the 2015 author’s judgment, not a claim that the watch suits every buyer or remains inexpensive today.

Broer described it as “a great first mechanical watch for those who just get started with watches and don’t want to blow a lot of money on a watch (yet).” That is Fratello’s editorial opinion, not a statement from Baume & Mercier.
What the 2015 Classima offered
Case sizes and movement
In its account of the 2015 collection, Fratello said the men’s case size had moved from 42 mm to 40 mm. The described men’s automatic models used a movement based on Sellita’s SW200 and had a transparent case back. The article also covered a 36.5 mm women’s line, with mechanical and quartz choices. These are historical details; they do not establish the specifications of every Classima sold then or now.
#1 Best Overall
- Swiss Automatic Movement
- White dial with hours, minutes, seconds, date
- Yellow gold round case
- Black alligator strap
- Water resistant to 99 feet (30 M): withstands rain and splashes of water, but not showering or submersion
Design and configurations
The 2015 men’s range included stainless-steel and two-tone versions, with bracelet or leather-strap configurations. Fratello highlighted a guilloché-finished dial center, blued hands on steel models and gilt hands on two-tone models. Roman numerals marked 12, 3, 6 and 9, with stick markers at the other hours. Together, those details explain the article’s view of the Classima as formal but versatile. They should not be assumed to describe current references.
Historical price
Fratello reported that a particular stainless-steel model with an alligator leather strap and folding clasp started at just below €2,000 in 2015; two-tone models cost more. That is a period price for a specified configuration, not a current price or buying guide.

What Baume & Mercier lists now
Baume & Mercier’s official international English website currently presents Classima as an active collection, with a new generation of men’s 40 mm watches offered in automatic or quartz versions. One listed example is the Classima 10853 Automatic Watch, Date Display – 40mm.
The listing establishes the 10853’s stated movement type, date display and case size. It does not, in the page text reviewed, establish its price, stock in a particular country, movement caliber, water resistance or strap material. Nor does the collection-level description make every current Classima 40 mm or automatic. Check the precise reference and local listing before relying on a specification or availability claim.

How to judge whether a Classima suits you
If you are considering a current Classima, begin with the exact reference rather than the 2015 description. Automatic and quartz versions answer different preferences: an automatic movement appeals to someone who wants a mechanical watch, while quartz is a different movement choice. The available official listing confirms both types exist in the current men’s collection, but the information here is not enough for a complete model-by-model comparison.
- Confirm the reference and dimensions. Do not transfer the historical 2015 case or movement details to a current watch without a reference-specific specification.
- Check the actual configuration. Verify dial, bracelet or strap, clasp and other details for the exact model you can buy.
- Check local purchase terms. Confirm price, availability, warranty and service arrangements with the seller or Baume & Mercier for your country.
- Match the watch to your needs. Classima is a traditional timepiece; the title is not evidence of smartwatch functions.
Verdict
The “perfect smart watch” framing belongs to a 2015 feature about a traditional Classima as a possible first mechanical watch. Its case sizes, movement description, design details and price are period-specific. The collection is still listed by Baume & Mercier, including the 40 mm automatic Classima 10853, but current reference-level details and local buying terms need checking independently.
