The Bell & Ross BR-03 GMT Compass pairs a conventional second-time-zone watch with a solar-compass display. Its 42 mm steel case, independently quick-set GMT hand and rotating 24-hour bezel serve travelers; the dial’s compass markings support the maker’s sun-based direction-reading method. It is reference BR0393-COM-ST/SRB, a manufacturer-listed 500-piece limited edition.
What is the Bell & Ross BR-03 GMT Compass?
It is a 42 mm square automatic watch in Bell & Ross’s Flight Instruments collection. The brand describes that collection as inspired by aviation instruments; that is its design positioning, not evidence of aviation use or navigation validation. The BR-03 GMT Compass combines hours, minutes, central seconds, date, a second 24-hour time zone and a solar-compass display.
Bell & Ross lists reference BR0393-COM-ST/SRB with its BR-CAL.303 automatic movement and a 54-hour power reserve. The case is 12.3 mm thick, made of satin-finished and polished steel, and water-resistant to 100 m. The black dial has cardinal points and a minute track, beneath a sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating.
The blue-and-black bidirectional aluminium bezel carries a 24-hour scale. Black hour and minute hands have white Super-LumiNova X1 that glows green. The red-and-white GMT hand ends in twin arrows; the central seconds hand is black and blue. The supplied strap set includes black rubber and an additional black synthetic-fabric strap, with a steel pin buckle. These specifications are listed on the Bell & Ross US product page.

How does the GMT and solar-compass display work?
Using the second time zone
The GMT hand tracks a second time zone on a 24-hour cycle, read against the bezel scale. Bell & Ross says it can be quick-set independently of the hour hand, a useful distinction when changing the displayed second time zone without resetting local time. The maker lists a rotating, bidirectional bezel, but its product description does not give a separate bezel-based navigation procedure.
Using the solar compass
The compass feature is a sun-based reading method, not an electronic or magnetic compass sensor. Bell & Ross’s key instruction is: “Set the GMT hand to the local solar time (not the official time).” Its remaining directions are to place the watch flat and parallel to the ground, point the GMT hand toward the sun, then read direction against the dial’s 0°–360° scale and cardinal points.

That method depends on following the maker’s solar-time instruction; official clock time and local solar time are not interchangeable for this purpose. The directions describe Bell & Ross’s intended operation, not independently tested navigation accuracy. The brand’s product copy says, “With the BR-03 GMT Compass, Bell & Ross has reinvented the instrument watch with travellers in mind.”
Can the BR-03 GMT Compass really point north?
It is designed to help infer direction from the sun and the dial scale, provided the GMT hand is set to local solar time and the watch is positioned as instructed. It is not a magnetic compass and does not contain a stated electronic direction sensor. The available product information does not establish independently measured accuracy, so it should be understood as the manufacturer’s solar-compass method rather than a validated substitute for a dedicated navigation instrument.
