The original Bell & Ross BR03-94 Rafale is a 42 mm automatic chronograph in matte black ceramic, with a gray dial and colored chronograph hands. Bell & Ross identifies it as the BR 03 Rafale, reference BR0394-RAFALE-CE; the 2015 Time+Tide review calls it the BR03-94 Rafale. Its defining details are a 30-minute chronograph, tachymeter scale, 100 m water resistance, and a reported limited run of 500 pieces. This review draws on the published review and manufacturer specifications; it is not a new ownership or wear test.
What is the original BR03-94 Rafale?
Bell & Ross introduced the Rafale as a special edition associated with Dassault’s Rafale fighter aircraft. Felix Scholz’s Time+Tide review, published on 1 June 2015, reports that Dassault took part in the design and that the edition was limited to 500 pieces. Scholz linked the gray dial and Arabic numerals to the aircraft’s paint scheme.
The launch-era WatchProSite introduction says the 500-piece watch was to be presented at Le Bourget during the Paris Air Show scheduled for 15–21 June 2015. That is launch context, not evidence of current stock.
How does the design come together?
The watch pairs a matte black ceramic case with a matte gray dial. The overall palette is restrained; the chronograph hands add the conspicuous flashes of color. Scholz described those hands as the visual accent that keeps the watch from feeling too muted. He also found that the tachymeter lettering interrupted the dial’s symmetry, while recognizing its functional purpose. Those are the reviewer’s design judgments, not findings from a new hands-on test.

Bell & Ross specifies Super-LumiNova on the numerals, indices, and hour and minute hands. The crystal is sapphire with an anti-reflective coating. Together, these details give the display a technical, instrument-like character without changing the basic black-and-gray scheme.

The chronograph has a central seconds hand and a 30-minute counter at 9 o’clock; the small-seconds display is at 3. The tachymeter scale is on the flange. The available specifications do not establish a power-reserve figure for this exact reference, so one should not be inferred from another BR-CAL.301 watch.

Is it the same as the Rafale Solo Display?
No. The original 2015 BR03-94 Rafale is distinct from Bell & Ross’s later BR-03 Chrono Rafale Solo Display. The manufacturer describes that separate 500-piece model with a black dial, orange and yellow accents, and a Rafale Solo Display fabric-and-rubber strap. Check the full model name and reference when identifying or shopping for the gray-dial ceramic watch.
Can you buy the original Rafale now?
At the time the Bell & Ross US product page was checked, it displayed a price of $6,600 and an unavailable status for the listed sizes. That is a time-specific US storefront snapshot, not a resale valuation or a statement about inventory in other countries. Stock and pricing can change. If considering a listing, verify that it is the original BR0394-RAFALE-CE rather than the later Solo Display, confirm the seller and authenticity, and check that the stated condition and included items are documented. Bell & Ross lists a black rubber strap, but the available sources do not establish a replacement strap part number or compatibility details.

Its appeal is specific: a compact-for-the-style 42 mm square ceramic case, subdued gray-and-black colors, and a functional chronograph layout with aviation-inspired details. The colored hands give the dial contrast, while the tachymeter lettering adds information at the cost of some visual symmetry, as Scholz observed. Buyers prioritizing a confirmed current purchase route will need to check availability directly; the official US page showed the model as unavailable when checked.
