The Benrus Series #3061 is a modern watch family, not one single specification: the BU has a black 24-hour dial, the GT uses a California dial, and the BOR pairs a light-catching dial with a beads-of-rice bracelet. The modern models are 39.5 mm automatics; the vintage civilian #3061 was reported as a 34 mm hand-wound watch. That distinction matters when weighing the collection’s military-inspired design, size, and price.
Which Benrus #3061 is this review about?
“Series #3061” covers several variants. The BU and GT specifications below come from BENRUS product pages; independent hands-on observations in this review refer to Sean McCoy’s BOR loaner at GearJunkie. They should not be treated as one interchangeable watch.

|---|---|---|---|
| Modern BU, ref. 3061-SS-B-039-01 | Black dial with a 24-hour layout | 39.5 mm diameter, 9.95 mm height, 20 mm lug width, 47 mm lug-to-lug; ETA 2892 automatic with 42-hour reserve | 10 ATM; BENRUS product specification, accessed 2026 |
| Modern GT, ref. 3061-SS-G-039-02 | California dial mixing Roman and Arabic numerals, with date | 39.5 mm diameter, 9.95 mm height, 20 mm lug width, 47 mm lug-to-lug; ETA 2892 automatic with 42-hour reserve | 10 ATM; official page displayed $1,895 when accessed in 2026 |

| Vintage civilian Series #3061 | Historical civilian model associated with the military-style field-watch design | 34 mm case; manually wound, according to Fratello’s 2022 account | Not stated in the cited Fratello article |
Specifications are tied to the cited reference or reviewed variant; confirm the exact reference before buying, especially where date, dial, bracelet, and case details matter. BENRUS lists the GT at its official product page and the BU at its official product page.
How the modern #3061 wears
The modern BU and GT measure 39.5 mm across and 47 mm lug-to-lug, with a 9.95 mm height and 20 mm lugs, according to BENRUS. Those dimensions make them substantially larger than the 34 mm vintage civilian watch described by Fratello, though the modern case remains relatively slim on paper. Wrist fit is personal: lug-to-lug length and the shape of the case can matter as much as diameter, so try one on if possible.

Mainspring Watch Magazine’s BU review describes a screw-down crown, sapphire display back, and BGW9 lume, alongside the 100 m rating and ETA 2892. The published manufacturer specifications corroborate the core case and movement figures for the BU and GT. Check the individual reference for details rather than assuming every suffix shares every feature.
BU vs. GT: which dial suits you?
BU: the black 24-hour dial
The BU is the more direct choice if you want a black dial and a 24-hour layout. That gives the watch a stronger instrument-like character than the GT’s mixed-numeral dial. Its look is still a modern interpretation rather than a claim that this exact civilian model was issued to military personnel.
GT: the California dial
The GT’s Roman numerals on one half and Arabic numerals on the other create a distinctive California-dial appearance, and the official specification includes a date. BENRUS describes it as a tribute to Steve McQueen’s style in Bullitt; that is the manufacturer’s design framing, not evidence that the modern GT is the watch worn in the film.
Both current BU and GT specifications share the same stated dimensions, ETA 2892 movement, 42-hour power reserve, sapphire crystal, and 10 ATM water resistance. The visible choice is chiefly dial language and date configuration, subject to checking the exact reference.

Military heritage and the Bullitt connection
BENRUS says the collection is “A modern interpretation of the BENRUS DTU-2A/P, developed under the MIL-W-3818B specification.” This is the brand’s description of the modern collection’s inspiration; it does not make the civilian Series #3061, the military DTU-2A/P, and today’s reinterpretations the same watch. Fratello also connects the civilian design to the film Bullitt, while the modern GT page explicitly invokes McQueen’s style. Treat those as design and cultural context, not proof of military issue or exact screen-watch identity.
What the BOR review says about wearing one
GearJunkie’s Sean McCoy reported wearing a BOR loaner for two weeks, including hiking and cross-country skiing. He wrote that it deviated by about 30 seconds over that trial. That is one reviewer’s result on one sample in his stated use—not a controlled accuracy test, a long-term reliability finding, or a prediction for every watch. McCoy rated the watch 7.9/10 overall and style 9/10, while identifying the bright, polished appearance as a drawback for someone seeking a stealthy field watch. His observations apply to the BOR example he reviewed, not automatically to every BU or GT configuration. Read the full GearJunkie BOR review.
Does the #3061 look like a discreet field watch?
Not necessarily. The family draws on field-watch design, but the polished or light-catching finishes—particularly the BOR described by GearJunkie—can look brighter and dressier than a conventional matte, low-visibility field watch. That is a matter of taste and intended use: the finish may be part of the appeal if you want a more conspicuous vintage-inspired watch, but it is a mismatch if visual subtlety is the priority.

The available prices refer to different models and dates, so they are not a direct like-for-like price history. BENRUS’s GT page displayed $1,895 when accessed in 2026; GearJunkie listed $1,995 for the BOR in its March 2026 review; Fratello reported a US$595 launch-era price for the modern Series #3061 in October 2022. Rank #3
- Black Dial Design: Black dial with full Arabic numerals pairs with a green fabric slip-thru strap that changes in seconds
- Adjustable Strap: A comfortable band fits securely up to an 8-inch wrist circumference for everyday wear, day in and day out
- Indiglo Backlight: A push of the button illuminates the dial and luminous hands in the dark, day or night, rain or shine
- All-Weather Durability: A mineral glass crystal and water resistance to 50 meters keep this field watch ready for daily wear
- Built to Last: A Timex watch is designed for durability and everyday reliability; every piece reflects our commitment to quality without compromise
Value depends on whether the design and execution justify the asking price for you. The modern collection offers a Swiss ETA 2892, sapphire crystal, and a slim stated profile, but the cited material does not establish long-term reliability or a comprehensive competitor ranking. The vintage model’s smaller size and hand-wound movement are distinct propositions, not simply cheaper versions of the modern watch. Fratello’s dated launch context is available in its 2022 introduction.
Strap fit and basic care
The modern BU and GT have a published 20 mm lug width, making “20 mm watch strap” the sensible starting point for aftermarket searches. BENRUS lists nylon, leather, fabric, rubber, and metal strap options on its GT page. Compatibility of a generic strap has not been tested here, so verify lug width and the attachment style on your specific watch before ordering. Vintage examples should be measured rather than assumed to share the modern dimensions.
A BENRUS instruction manual hosted by Manuals+ for reference 3061-SS-S-039-03 advises gently winding the crown clockwise about 25–30 turns to start the automatic movement after a period unused. It also recommends annual water-resistance checks and warns that resistance can change over time. The manual is for that particular reference, so match it to your watch before applying its instructions. A water-resistance rating is not a guarantee that an older or untested watch is safe to submerge. The manual is available at Manuals+.
Quick Recap
Who should consider the Benrus Series #3061?
- Choose the BU if the black dial and 24-hour layout are the draw.
- Choose the GT if you prefer the California dial and date, and confirm the listed reference and current price.
- Consider the BOR if you want the steel beads-of-rice bracelet and a brighter, more polished look; McCoy’s test notes apply to his loaner only.
- Look at the vintage civilian version if you specifically want the reported 34 mm case and hand-wound movement, while treating its condition and water resistance as separate questions.
- Look elsewhere if a matte, visually discreet military-style watch is essential.
