For a lower-cost alternative to the Rolex Submariner, Fratello Watches’ Ben Hodges selected the Omega Seamaster Professional Diver 300M, Breitling SuperOcean Heritage 42, Tudor Black Bay, Tudor Black Bay 58 and Oris Divers Sixty-Five. His September 2021 list spans heritage-inspired designs, different case sizes and a wide range of then-current UK retail prices. Those prices are historical, not current quotes.
How to read this comparison
These are Hodges’s editorial picks, not the result of a controlled test or a claim that any watch is an exact substitute for a Submariner. The comparison is most useful as a shortlist: each model offers a dive-watch identity and its own mix of design cues, proportions and features. Fratello’s listed prices were UK retail prices in September 2021.
The alternatives
Omega Seamaster Professional Diver 300M
Fratello listed the steel-bracelet Seamaster Professional Diver 300M at £4,450 in 2021. The article discusses the 2018 refresh, including a ceramic bezel with recessed enamel numerals and a wave-pattern ceramic dial. It reports that the caliber 8800 Master Chronometer movement provides 15,000-gauss magnetic resistance and a 55-hour power reserve. Other noted details include a date at 6 o’clock and a diver extension on the bracelet.
Breitling SuperOcean Heritage 42
The 42 mm SuperOcean Heritage on a steel shark-mesh bracelet was listed at £3,880. Hodges points to the heritage line’s 2018 revival, its arrowhead hour hand and ceramic bezel, as well as its Tudor-supplied movement. This is the pick for someone drawn to a mesh-bracelet look and vintage design references.
#1 Best Overall
- Stainless Steel case with Black Resin Band
- Black Dial with date window at 3 O'clock
- Luminous markers and hour hands; sweep second hand
- Anti-reverse bezel
- Water-resistant to 200 M (660 feet)
Tudor Black Bay
The 41 mm Black Bay on a steel rivet-style bracelet was listed at £2,840. Fratello reports a 70-hour power reserve for its MT5602 movement. The article also notes that this version lacks a ceramic bezel and helium escape valve, describing those omissions as part of its value positioning rather than treating them as shortcomings for every wearer.
Tudor Black Bay 58
Listed at £2,760, the Black Bay 58 has a 39 mm case and slimmer profile than the 41 mm Black Bay described above. Hodges presents it as the smaller, more vintage-feeling option. It is a particularly specific choice if you want a Submariner alternative with more compact proportions.

Oris Divers Sixty-Five
Fratello listed the steel-bracelet Divers Sixty-Five at £1,650 and noted variants in 36, 38, 40 and 42 mm. Hodges favored the 38 mm for its vintage-inspired proportions, writing that it “best replicates the size of the vintage inspiration skin diver from ’60s.” That sizing choice makes it the most compact-focused recommendation in the list, while the range gives shoppers other case sizes to consider.

Which one should you shortlist?
- For a feature-rich modern diver: consider the Omega, whose reported specifications include a ceramic bezel and dial, magnetic resistance and a 55-hour reserve.
- For a heritage look on mesh: consider the Breitling SuperOcean Heritage 42.
- For a larger Tudor: the 41 mm Black Bay combines the article’s reported 70-hour reserve with a more traditional bezel material.
- For a smaller, slimmer Tudor: the 39 mm Black Bay 58 is the more compact alternative.
- For vintage-inspired sizing at the lowest listed price: the Oris Divers Sixty-Five was Fratello’s least expensive pick, with the 38 mm favored by Hodges.
Use these distinctions to narrow the field, then compare current examples in person where possible: case diameter alone does not determine how a watch wears, and the cited article does not provide a direct wrist-fit comparison.
