Why it suits a first luxury-watch purchase
- You can compare new and pre-owned watches with staff assistance instead of negotiating with an unknown marketplace seller.
- Its certified pre-owned selection is backed by a two-year international guarantee as stated for that selection in 2026.
- As an Official Rolex Retailer, it is authorized to sell new Rolex and Rolex Certified Pre-Owned watches where the program is available.
- Store appointments make it easier to inspect dial condition, bracelet stretch, clasp wear and polishing before committing.
What to verify before paying
Ask whether the watch is sold as new, pre-owned or Rolex Certified Pre-Owned; whether the manufacturer warranty has started; and which entity will handle a future service claim. Confirm the reference and serial documentation, included box and papers, any replacement parts, the return deadline and whether the guarantee is valid in your destination country. A boutique experience does not eliminate the need to check the individual watch.
The 1916 Company: curated, owned inventory for collectors
The 1916 Company, formerly known as WatchBox, is aimed at buyers who prefer a specialist dealer to stand behind stock it owns. The company says it owns every watch it sells, rather than merely matching a buyer with an outside listing. That model can simplify responsibility when a watch needs inspection, servicing or a warranty decision.
Authentication and preparation
The company says Swiss-trained watchmakers authenticate and prepare its watches, reject replicas and reject watches containing inauthentic parts. Those statements address the most serious pre-owned risks, but the buyer should still request a written condition description and ask which components, if any, were replaced during preparation.

Its authorized new-watch lineup includes Rolex, Patek Philippe, Tudor, Cartier, Omega, Breitling, Grand Seiko and IWC. Authenticated pre-owned watches are stated to receive a two-year global warranty. Clarify what the warranty covers, where work is performed, whether shipping is included and how exclusions such as magnetism, accidental damage or water exposure are handled.
Best use case
Choose this route when you value a selected inventory and a single dealer relationship more than the widest possible search results. It is particularly useful for comparing condition among several high-value references without coordinating with multiple private sellers.
Watchfinder Marketplace: partner choice with a central checkpoint
Watchfinder Marketplace gives online buyers access to partner listings while adding a centralized inspection stage. Watchfinder states that every watch purchased from a certified partner is authenticated at its service center before being sent to the customer. The watch is delivered by secure courier, and marketplace purchases from certified sellers have a 14-day return window.
How the transaction works
- Filter listings by reference, material, year, box and papers, seller location and stated condition.
- Read the partner’s description and save screenshots of the listing, photographs and promised accessories.
- Confirm that the seller is marked as a certified partner and that the watch will pass through the service center.
- On delivery, inspect the package, serial and reference, bracelet links, clasp, crystal, bezel, movement performance and accessories before removing protective films or sizing the bracelet.
- Keep all packaging and notify the seller and marketplace in writing immediately if the watch differs from the listing or arrives damaged.
Limits of the marketplace model
Central authentication reduces risk but does not make every listing identical. A 1990s watch with service parts, a recently polished case and no original papers is a different proposition from an unworn example with a complete set. Compare the condition report with the photographs and ask for timekeeping or service information when it is material to your decision.

Chrono24 is useful when a reference is scarce, when you want to compare asking prices across countries, or when you need to see how condition and accessories affect value. It combines professional dealers and private sellers, so the platform should be treated as a set of individual transactions rather than a single inventory standard.

Buyer Protection and timing
For professional-dealer purchases, Chrono24 Buyer Protection holds payment in escrow for 14 days after receipt. Professional-dealer buyers also have a 14-day withdrawal right under the stated policy. For private-seller transactions, escrow lasts seven days. Start any complaint or return process inside the applicable period; do not assume a seller’s informal promise extends the platform deadline.
Optional checks
Chrono24 offers optional certification and theft checks. Use them when the cost is proportionate to the watch and when the seller’s own documentation is incomplete. Certification is an additional control, not proof that every aspect of originality, prior polishing or future water resistance is guaranteed indefinitely.
How to compare listings fairly
- Normalize prices for currency conversion, sales tax, import duty, brokerage, shipping and insurance.
- Separate dealer listings from private listings; their legal return rights and dispute routes are not the same.
- Compare the exact reference, production year, movement, dial variation, bracelet configuration and included links.
- Give a value to original box, warranty card, service receipts and replaced parts rather than treating “full set” as a universal definition.
- Ask for a current timestamped photograph and a written statement that the serial and movement numbers match the listing.
Chrono24 has been described by Marie Claire UK as serving nine million watch lovers per month. That is a secondary, company-claim figure, not an independently audited market statistic, so it should not be used as proof that a particular seller is safe.
Rolex Official Retailers and Rolex Certified Pre-Owned
If the target is a Rolex and provenance matters more than selection, begin with an Official Rolex Retailer. Rolex’s official guidance says that Official Rolex Jewelers are guarantors of the quality and authenticity of Rolex watches. This is the clearest route to a new watch with manufacturer-backed warranty administration, although popular references may not be immediately available.
What Certified Pre-Owned means
The Rolex Certified Pre-Owned program applies to second-hand watches that are certified as authentic, fully serviced and guaranteed by Rolex. The program is available only through certain authorized points of sale, so a pre-owned Rolex advertised elsewhere is not automatically a CPO watch. Ask to see the CPO documentation and confirm who provides the guarantee.
When this route is worth the premium
Choose it when a documented manufacturer certification, Rolex service and a clear chain of custody outweigh the possibility of finding a lower price through a dealer or marketplace. For vintage references, also ask about replaced tritium or luminous components, refinished dials and non-original bracelets, because certification does not make every historical configuration equally collectible.
Christie’s and other auction houses: for informed vintage buying
Auctions can expose you to rare prototypes, discontinued references, unusual complications and historically important watches that do not appear in ordinary retail inventory. They are a specialist channel, not a default substitute for an authorized dealer.
Read the sale documents
- Study the condition report and photographs, including any notes on restoration, replaced parts, corrosion, over-polishing or missing components.
- Research provenance and confirm whether ownership history is documented or merely reported by consignors.
- Calculate the buyer’s premium, sales tax, shipping, insurance, customs and any payment fees before setting a maximum bid.
- Read authenticity language, warranty disclaimers and return provisions in the conditions of sale. Auction returns are often narrower than retail returns.
- Arrange an independent inspection when permitted, particularly for high-value vintage watches or watches with complicated movements.
Bidding discipline
Set an all-in ceiling before the auction starts and stop when the total cost exceeds it. A winning bid is a binding purchase in many auction formats, and a visually attractive lot can still require an expensive service or replacement of scarce parts.

Checks to complete before sending payment
- Define the exact watch. Record the brand, reference, approximate production year, metal, dial, movement, bracelet and desired accessories. Small reference differences can change value dramatically.
- Identify the contracting seller. Confirm the legal business name, physical address, phone number, invoice entity and destination for returns. On a marketplace, distinguish the platform from the partner or private seller.
- Request documentary evidence. Ask for clear photographs of the serial documentation, warranty card, movement or case-back markings where appropriate, service receipts and included box and papers. Never rely on a stock image for a high-value purchase.
- Match the watch to the description. Confirm that the serial, reference, dial, bezel, bracelet and clasp shown in photographs are the same items named on the invoice.
- Clarify condition. Ask whether the case has been polished, whether the dial or hands were replaced, whether the movement has been serviced, and whether water resistance was tested. For vintage watches, request specific notes on corrosion and originality.
- Calculate the landed total. Add the listed price, sales tax or VAT, import duty, brokerage, shipping, insurance, currency-conversion costs and any buyer’s premium. A low headline price can become expensive after import.
- Read protection terms. Note the escrow duration, return deadline, withdrawal right, inspection requirements, refund method and who pays return shipping. Calendar the deadline immediately.
- Use secure payment. Pay only to the named seller through the platform or an invoice channel you have independently verified. Reject requests to move to an unprotected transfer solely to reduce fees.
- Inspect on arrival. Photograph the unopened package, then compare the watch with the listing before wearing it, resizing it or removing protective material. Keep every packing component until the return period ends.
- Document discrepancies quickly. Send dated photographs and a written description to the seller and platform within the applicable protection period. Ask for a repair, partial refund or return only after you understand how that choice affects warranty coverage.
Common failure modes and how to avoid them
The watch is authentic but not original in every component
A genuine case can contain a service dial, replacement hands, aftermarket bezel or non-matching bracelet. Ask specifically about replaced components and whether they are manufacturer parts. “Authentic” and “factory-original configuration” are different claims.
The warranty is not usable where you live
International, global and manufacturer warranties can have different exclusions, authorized-service requirements and shipping rules. Before paying, obtain the warranty document and ask whether your country is covered and where a claim must be filed.
The apparent bargain disappears at import
Cross-border purchases may incur VAT or sales tax, customs duty, brokerage and insurance costs. Request a written landed-cost estimate and confirm whether the seller ships on a duty-paid or duty-unpaid basis.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe return right expires while the watch is being inspected
Platform windows can be short. Arrange an independent inspection immediately after delivery, preserve packaging and notify the seller before the deadline if an appointment will take longer.
A private seller offers attractive terms outside the platform
Moving payment off-platform can remove escrow, withdrawal rights and dispute support. If you still consider a private transaction, use a written contract, independently verify identity and ownership, and arrange an inspection before releasing funds; otherwise choose a protected dealer transaction.
Service, trade-in and long-term ownership
Purchase protection is only one part of ownership. Ask who will service the watch, whether the seller offers trade-in or consignment, how warranty repairs are authorized, and whether replacement parts are documented. Keep the invoice, warranty card, service receipts, photographs and correspondence together. These records help with future servicing, insurance and resale.
For a modern watch under manufacturer warranty, an authorized service route may preserve value and simplify technical questions. For vintage watches, a specialist independent watchmaker may be necessary, but any intervention should be recorded because originality and condition are part of the watch’s value.
