Apple’s current 2026 lineup is easy to match to different needs: the Apple Watch Series 11 is the best everyday choice, the Apple Watch SE 3 is the value pick, and the Apple Watch Ultra 3 is built for long outdoor days, diving, and places without cellular coverage. Apple lists U.S. starting prices of $399, $249, and $799, respectively.
All three use Apple’s S10 chip, include 64GB of storage, and require an iPhone 11 or later—including iPhone SE (2nd generation or later)—running iOS 26 or later, according to Apple. The main differences are sensors, display, materials, battery life, GPS, water resistance, and satellite connectivity.
Apple Watch comparison: Series 11 vs. SE 3 vs. Ultra 3
| Model | U.S. starting price | Sizes and materials | Battery rating | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Apple Watch SE 3 | $249 for 40mm GPS; $279 for 44mm GPS | 40mm or 44mm aluminum | Up to 18 hours | Notifications, workouts, sleep tracking, and core health features |
| Apple Watch Series 11 | $399 for 42mm aluminum GPS | 42mm or 46mm aluminum; titanium starts at $699 | Up to 24 hours | Most people who want a fuller everyday feature set |
| Apple Watch Ultra 3 | $799 | 49mm titanium; GPS + Cellular only | Up to 42 hours | Hiking, endurance training, diving, and remote locations |
These are Apple’s U.S. starting prices before sales tax and carrier charges. GPS + Cellular versions cost more; cellular service requires a compatible plan and is not included with the watch. See Apple’s store for SE 3 pricing and configurations.
Best Apple Watch for most people: Apple Watch Series 11
The Series 11 is the strongest all-rounder. It adds health sensors missing from the SE 3, lasts longer between charges, and remains smaller and less expensive than the Ultra 3.

Apple specifies 42mm and 46mm cases, an always-on wide-angle OLED display rated up to 2,000 nits, IP6X dust resistance, 50-meter water resistance, and up to 24 hours of normal use or 38 hours in Low Power Mode. See Apple’s Series 11 specifications.
Health hardware and features include the ECG app, Blood Oxygen app, third-generation optical heart sensor, wrist-temperature sensing, sleep-apnea notifications, and hypertension notifications. Hypertension notifications are not a blood-pressure measurement or diagnosis; Apple describes them as alerts about possible signs of chronic high blood pressure.
The important buying caveat is performance. The Series 11 uses the same S10 processor and 64GB storage as the SE 3 and Ultra 3. You are paying for additional sensors, a brighter display, longer battery life, and material options—not a faster processor.
Choose the Series 11 if:
- You want ECG or hypertension notifications.
- You plan to wear the watch overnight and want more battery headroom.
- You frequently use the display outdoors.
- You want titanium without paying Ultra 3 prices.
- You want a capable watch that is less bulky than the Ultra 3.
Best value: Apple Watch SE 3
The SE 3 has an always-on Retina OLED display, Apple’s S10 chip, 64GB of storage, fast charging, sleep stages, sleep score, wrist-temperature sensing, and sleep-apnea notifications. It also provides high- and low-heart-rate alerts, irregular-rhythm notifications, low-cardio-fitness notifications, workouts, Apple Pay, safety features, and ordinary Apple Watch notifications. See Apple’s SE 3 specifications.
The compromises are specific. The SE 3 has a second-generation optical heart sensor and does not include ECG, the Blood Oxygen app, hypertension notifications, a depth gauge, or a water-temperature sensor. Apple lists peak display brightness at 1,000 nits.

Apple rates battery life at up to 18 hours, or up to 32 hours in Low Power Mode. The watch can charge to 80 percent in about 45 minutes; Apple also rates a 15-minute charge for up to eight hours of normal use and an eight-minute charge for up to eight hours of sleep tracking under its test conditions.
Choose the SE 3 if:
- You mainly need notifications, workouts, sleep tracking, Apple Pay, and safety features.
- You do not need ECG, Blood Oxygen, or hypertension notifications.
- You want the lowest price among the current models.
- You prefer a lighter 40mm or 44mm aluminum case.
The SE 3 is a swimming watch, not a dive computer. Apple says its 50-meter water-resistance rating is intended for shallow-water activities and excludes scuba diving, waterskiing, high-velocity water, and deeper submersion.
Best for outdoor and endurance use: Apple Watch Ultra 3
The Ultra 3 earns its price through hardware that matters outside the gym or office. It has a 49mm titanium case, a flat sapphire-crystal display rated up to 3,000 nits, an Action button, a siren, IP6X dust resistance, dual-frequency L1/L5 GPS, and up to 42 hours of normal-use battery life, according to Apple’s Ultra 3 specifications.

The Ultra 3 is rated for 100-meter water resistance and supports recreational scuba diving to 40 meters with the appropriate Dive Computer app. It is tested to MIL-STD 810H. Its display and case are better suited to rough use than the aluminum watches, although the 49mm size can feel excessive on a smaller wrist.

It is also the only current Apple Watch with built-in satellite communications. When cellular and Wi-Fi are unavailable, satellite connectivity can support Emergency SOS, Messages, and location sharing in supported regions.
Choose the Ultra 3 if:
- You hike, backpack, trail-run, dive, or regularly spend time outside cellular coverage.
- You need the longest battery life available from an Apple Watch.
- You want dual-frequency GPS, titanium, and sapphire crystal.
- You need satellite emergency communication or satellite messaging.
Do not buy the Ultra 3 expecting faster apps. It has the same S10 chip and 64GB storage as the Series 11 and SE 3. Its premium is for endurance, navigation, construction, water capability, and satellite hardware.

Apple’s Blood Oxygen availability depends on region and model. For U.S. watches purchased on or after January 18, 2024, with part numbers ending in LW/A, data is analyzed on the paired iPhone and results appear in the iPhone Health app rather than being analyzed directly on the watch. Apple says measurements are for general wellness and are not intended for medical use. See Apple’s model and feature information.
What is current in 2026?
As of August 9, 2026, watchOS 26.6 is the latest public release; Apple released it on July 27, 2026. watchOS 27 has been previewed and is available through developer betas, but should not be treated as the current public operating system. See Apple’s watchOS release information.
All three watches support watchOS 26. Apple’s watchOS 27 preview says Apple Intelligence features will support Series 9 or later, Ultra 2 or later, and SE 3 when paired with an Apple Intelligence-capable iPhone. Availability can vary by iPhone, language, region, and final software release.

Cellular, Family Setup, and satellite limitations
Choose GPS + Cellular if you want the watch to work more independently from an iPhone, but check carrier compatibility first. A cellular-capable watch still requires an eligible plan, and coverage depends on carrier and location.
Apple Watch For Your Kids requires a GPS + Cellular model. When configured this way, several features are unavailable, including ECG, Blood Oxygen, sleep tracking, wrist temperature, irregular-rhythm notifications, Cycle Tracking, Medications, respiratory rate, and the double-tap gesture. See Apple’s setup and model information.
Ultra 3 satellite features are not equivalent to ordinary cellular messaging. They may be unavailable indoors, under heavy foliage, near obstructions, while the watch is wet, or without a clear view of the sky and horizon. Apple also warns that satellite messages can take several minutes.
Emergency SOS via satellite is free for two years after activation in supported countries. Messages and location sharing via satellite require an active carrier plan and have narrower availability. If the paired iPhone is nearby but in Airplane Mode, satellite features may also fail. See Apple’s satellite feature guidance.
Which Apple Watch should you buy?
- Buy the Series 11 for the best balance of health tracking, display quality, battery life, size, and price.
- Buy the SE 3 if you want a current Apple Watch for less and can live without ECG, Blood Oxygen, hypertension notifications, and the brighter display.
- Buy the Ultra 3 if its 42-hour battery, rugged materials, advanced GPS, diving support, or satellite communications solve a real problem for you.
The Ultra 3 costs $400 more than the Series 11. For ordinary notifications, workouts, sleep tracking, and Apple Pay, the SE 3 and Series 11 are the more sensible choices.

FAQ
Which Apple Watch is best for most people in 2026?
The Apple Watch Series 11 is the best choice for most people. It offers ECG, hypertension notifications, a brighter display, longer battery life, and more sensor hardware than the SE 3 without the Ultra 3’s size and price.
Is the Apple Watch SE 3 worth buying?
Yes, if you mainly want notifications, workouts, sleep tracking, Apple Pay, safety features, and basic heart-rate monitoring. It has the S10 chip, 64GB of storage, an always-on display, and sleep-apnea notifications, but lacks ECG, the Blood Oxygen app, and hypertension notifications.
Is the Apple Watch Ultra 3 faster than the Series 11?
No. The Ultra 3 and Series 11 both use Apple’s S10 chip and 64GB of storage. The Ultra 3 costs more for its battery life, titanium case, sapphire display, dual-frequency GPS, diving support, and satellite communications.
Can the Apple Watch Ultra 3 send messages by satellite without a cellular plan?
Not generally. Emergency SOS via satellite is available without an active carrier plan during its free activation period in supported regions, but Messages and location sharing via satellite require an active carrier plan.
The Bottom Line
For most buyers, get the Apple Watch Series 11. Choose the SE 3 when price is the priority, and choose the Ultra 3 only when its long battery life, rugged construction, advanced GPS, diving features, or satellite communication are genuinely useful.
