If your watch is slow to catch a sprint, loses heart rate during strength work, or cannot record a swim reliably, an external monitor can make a bigger difference than changing watches. The best choice depends on the watch or bike computer you already own, whether you need offline recording, and whether you can tolerate a chest strap.

For most watch users, the Polar H10 remains the safest all-round recommendation. The COROS Heart Rate Monitor is the more comfortable upper-arm option, the Garmin HRM 600 makes the most sense for Garmin owners who want running dynamics and standalone activity recording, and the Polar Verity Sense is the strongest optical choice for swimming.

Best heart rate monitors at a glance

Best for Model Sensor Battery Offline recording Connectivity
Most accurate all-rounder Polar H10 Electrical ECG-style chest strap Up to 400 hours; replaceable CR2025 One workout, up to 30 hours Bluetooth, ANT+, Polar GymLink
Most comfortable armband COROS Heart Rate Monitor Optical upper-arm 38 hours active; 80 days standby No onboard workout memory listed Bluetooth; up to three devices
Best for Garmin watches Garmin HRM 600 Electrical ECG-style chest strap Up to two months at one hour per day Yes Bluetooth and ANT+
Best optical and swim option Polar Verity Sense Optical upper-arm, forearm or temple Up to 30 hours Yes Bluetooth and ANT+

Chest straps generally have the advantage when effort changes quickly: their electrical signal is taken close to the heart and they tend to respond faster than optical sensors during intervals, sudden accelerations and repeated strength sets. A properly fitted upper-arm sensor can perform very well for running, but is more affected by movement, fit and external light. (Source: REI heart-rate monitor testing.)

Polar H10: best overall

The Polar H10 is the heart rate monitor to buy when accuracy, compatibility and predictable behavior matter more than avoiding a chest strap. It uses an electrical sensor and supports Bluetooth LE, ANT+ and Polar GymLink 5 kHz. That makes it suitable for Garmin watches, COROS watches, bike computers, gym equipment and phones, provided the receiving device supports one of those standards. (Polar H10 specifications.)

Polar H10 Heart Rate Monitor Chest Strap - ANT + Bluetooth, Waterproof HR Sensor for Men and Women, Black, M-XXL
  • WORKS WITH EVERYTHING: Polar HRM works with ALL HRM compatible Equipment.
  • SUPREME ACCURACY: Widely recognized for its top precision by many sources, Polar H10 is the most accurate heart rate sensor in Polar's history. Polar H10 provides top quality measurement.
  • CONNECTIVITY: Bluetooth, ANT plus and 5 kHz provide an excellent variety of connection options. You can use Bluetooth and ANT plus connections simultaneously as well as two Bluetooth connections simultaneously.
  • POLAR PRO CHEST STRAP: With improved electrodes, an easy-to-use buckle and silicone dots, the strap is comfortable and interference-free.
  • VERSATILITY: Polar H10 is fully waterproof and it has internal memory for multiple hours.

Independent testing found no major dropouts or consistent over- or under-reporting during running, cycling, intervals and strength training. (Source: WIRED heart-rate monitor testing.)

Important H10 recording limitation

The H10 can store one workout internally, with up to 30 hours of once-per-second heart-rate data, but it does not begin recording merely because you put it on. Start the session in Polar Beat using Save HR with sensor, then sync the file later. If you simply wear the strap while leaving your watch or phone behind, there may be no saved workout to retrieve. (Polar recording instructions.)

The battery is rated for approximately 400 hours and uses a replaceable CR2025 coin cell. Polar specifically says not to substitute a CR2032. The strap is water-resistant to 30 meters and can be used for swimming, although live Bluetooth transmission is not reliable underwater. For a swim, use internal recording or a compatible 5 kHz receiver. (Polar H10 specifications.)

How to set up the H10

  1. Wear the strap, wet the electrodes and tighten it so it stays in contact with your skin.
  2. Pair it with Polar Flow first so the sensor can receive firmware updates.
  3. For sensor options, open Polar Beat → Settings → HR sensor.
  4. Pair the H10 from the watch, bike computer or training app rather than relying on the phone’s generic Bluetooth menu.
  5. If you need two Bluetooth receivers, enable dual Bluetooth in the sensor settings. The H10 can maintain two simultaneous Bluetooth connections.

Polar’s support page lists H10 firmware version 4.2.0, updated March 4, 2026. (Polar H10 support.)

Common H10 problems

  • Erratic readings at the start: wet the electrodes and tighten the strap before pairing.
  • No offline file: start recording in Polar Beat with Save HR with sensor; wearing the sensor alone is not enough.
  • The second device will not connect: turn on dual Bluetooth.
  • Your phone cannot find the sensor: remove old H10 entries from the phone’s Bluetooth list and pair through the receiving app or device.

COROS Heart Rate Monitor: best armband

The COROS Heart Rate Monitor is the best fit for people who dislike chest straps but still want an external sensor for a sports watch. It sits on the upper arm, between the biceps and deltoid, rather than on the wrist. COROS lists a standard band for arms measuring 7.09–12.6 inches (18–32 cm) and a large band for 9.4–16.9 inches (24–43 cm). (COROS specifications.)

Its optical sensor supports up to three simultaneous Bluetooth connections. You can therefore send heart rate to a COROS watch, an indoor trainer and another compatible app or device at the same time. The trade-off is connectivity: this monitor is Bluetooth-only and does not support ANT+.

Battery life is rated at up to 38 hours of active operation or 80 days in standby. A magnetic USB cable charges the sensor, and wear detection turns it on and off automatically. Unlike the H10, Verity Sense and HRM 600, the COROS monitor is not listed with onboard workout storage. It is designed to transmit live heart rate to paired Bluetooth devices. (Source: COROS product information.)

Independent treadmill interval testing found results from the COROS armband and Garmin HRM 600 chest strap were nearly identical in that test. That does not make the two sensor types interchangeable in every situation, but it shows why a well-fitted upper-arm monitor can be a practical alternative for runners. (Source: WIRED heart-rate monitor testing.)

How to pair the COROS monitor

  1. Put the sensor on the upper arm, high enough to sit between the biceps and deltoid.
  2. Make sure the optical window is flush against the skin and tighten the band enough to block outside light without making it uncomfortable.
  3. On a compatible COROS watch, open System → Accessories → Add Bluetooth.
  4. After pairing, check status and battery at System → Accessories → Added List → COROS Heart Rate Monitor.

If readings drop out, move the sensor higher on the arm, improve skin contact and tighten the band. The most important limitation is the lack of ANT+. An ANT+-only bike computer or watch cannot receive this monitor’s heart-rate signal. (COROS fit guidance.)

Garmin HRM 600: best for Garmin users

The Garmin HRM 600 is a premium chest strap aimed squarely at the Garmin ecosystem. It uses an electrical heart-rate sensor, transmits over Bluetooth and ANT+, and includes internal activity recording. Garmin rates the rechargeable lithium-ion battery for up to two months when used for one hour per day. (Garmin HRM 600 announcement.)

Without a watch, it can record heart rate, calories, speed, distance, steps and intensity minutes, then synchronize the activity to Garmin Connect. With a compatible Garmin watch, it also provides running dynamics such as cadence, stride length, vertical oscillation, vertical ratio, ground-contact time, ground-contact-time balance and step-speed-loss metrics. (Garmin running-dynamics information.)

That makes it a compelling accessory for Garmin runners who want more data or occasionally train without wearing a watch. It is less compelling for someone who only needs a reliable heart-rate number across several brands; the H10 is less tied to one ecosystem and uses a replaceable coin-cell battery.

The HRM 600 is rated to 5 ATM. Its electronic module detaches from the textile strap for washing. Do not put the electronic module in a washing machine. (Garmin HRM 600 manual.)

Pairing the HRM 600 with Garmin

To add it through Garmin Connect:

  1. Put on the HRM 600.
  2. Hold the sensor button for four seconds, until the LED flashes purple.
  3. Open Garmin Connect.
  4. Tap More → Garmin Devices → Add Device.
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions.

To use running dynamics, pair the strap from the watch’s Sensors & Accessories menu using a secure Bluetooth connection. Open Bluetooth may provide heart rate while withholding some running-dynamics data; Garmin specifically says step-speed-loss metrics require secure Bluetooth. (Garmin pairing guidance.)

Common HRM 600 problems

  • Heart rate works but running dynamics are absent: delete the sensor and pair it again using secure Bluetooth.
  • Running-dynamics values are zero: check that the module is right-side up and that its logo aligns with the logo on the strap.
  • The watch finds it, then loses it: fully charge the module, keep it close to the watch and update its software.
  • Garmin Connect cannot add it: the HRM 600 can be paired with only one mobile device at a time through Garmin Connect. Remove it from the old account and phone Bluetooth settings.
  • An update fails: keep the strap within a few feet of the phone or Garmin device and leave Garmin Connect open until installation finishes.

Polar Verity Sense: best optical sensor for swimming

The Polar Verity Sense is the most versatile optical option in this group. It can be worn on the upper arm or forearm, or attached to swimming goggles with the included clip. It supports Bluetooth, ANT+ and internal recording, and can maintain two simultaneous Bluetooth connections. (Polar Verity Sense specifications.)

Polar rates it for up to 30 hours of training. It supports live transmission, recording without an actively connected device and a swim mode for collecting data underwater. Its WR50/5 ATM rating is higher than the H10’s WR30 rating, although water resistance should not be confused with reliable underwater Bluetooth transmission. (Sources: Polar; Polar H10.)

The Verity Sense is a good choice for pool users who do not want a chest strap and for athletes who need to move the sensor between a watch, gym equipment and standalone recording. It is still an optical device, so fit and placement matter. Pool testing has also found lower heart-rate consistency underwater than on land, including with chest straps. Treat swim heart-rate data as useful training information rather than perfect physiological measurement. (Source: REI testing.)

Chest strap or armband?

Choose a chest strap if you train with intervals, sprinting, cycling, rowing or strength work and want the quickest response to changing effort. The H10 and HRM 600 are the strongest choices here. (Source: REI testing.)

Choose an armband if chest straps irritate your skin, shift during exercise or are simply too uncomfortable to wear consistently. The COROS monitor is the straightforward comfort choice, while the Verity Sense adds ANT+ and offline swim recording.

Neither type removes the need for correct fit. A chest strap needs damp electrodes and firm contact. An optical armband needs its sensor window flat against the skin, a secure band and the correct position on the upper arm. A loose or badly placed sensor can produce worse data than a basic wrist sensor worn correctly.

  • CONVENIENCE: With only one button, using Polar Verity Sense couldn't be easier. Only 3cm wide, and less than 1cm thin: it’s hard to believe that something so tiny could hold such immense power.
  • MULTIPLE CONNECTIVITY OPTIONS: Live heart rate broadcasting, 2 simultaneous Bluetooth channels, limitless ANT plus connections, and compatible with a host of 3rd party apps.
  • VERSATILITY: Polar Verity Sense suits countless different applications. You can either follow your heart rate in real time on a connected device or app or record your session and transfer your data to your phone afterwards.
  • ACCURACY: Verity Sense is able to accurately track heart rate when placed against the skin on your upper arm, forearm, or can be clipped to goggles.

What to check before buying

  1. Receiver compatibility: check whether your watch or bike computer accepts Bluetooth, ANT+ or both.
  2. Recording needs: confirm whether you need the sensor to store a workout when no watch is present.
  3. Connection count: the H10 supports two Bluetooth connections, the COROS monitor three and Verity Sense two.
  4. Water use: check both the water-resistance rating and how the sensor records underwater. Water resistance alone does not make live Bluetooth work in a pool.
  5. Maintenance: textile straps need washing, electrodes need contact and rechargeable sensors need regular charging.

FAQ

Is the Polar H10 more accurate than the COROS Heart Rate Monitor?

The H10 has the stronger technical case for rapid changes in effort because it uses an electrical chest signal. A properly fitted COROS upper-arm optical monitor can closely match a chest strap during some running and interval tests, but optical sensors remain more sensitive to fit, movement and external light. (Source: REI testing.)

Can the COROS Heart Rate Monitor connect to an ANT+ watch?

No. The current COROS Heart Rate Monitor is Bluetooth-only and does not list ANT+ support. Use a Polar H10, Garmin HRM 600 or Polar Verity Sense if your watch or bike computer requires ANT+. (COROS product information.)

Which heart rate monitor is best for swimming?

The Polar Verity Sense is the strongest optical swim choice because it includes a goggle clip and swim recording mode. The Polar H10 can also be used in water, but Bluetooth transmission is unreliable underwater, so use internal recording or a compatible 5 kHz receiver. (Polar Verity Sense; Polar H10.)

Does the Polar H10 record automatically when worn?

No. Offline recording must be started in Polar Beat using the Save HR with sensor option. The H10 stores one workout, with up to 30 hours of once-per-second heart-rate data. (Polar recording instructions.)

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Buy the Polar H10 if you want the best combination of accuracy, compatibility and value for a sports watch. Choose the COROS Heart Rate Monitor for a more comfortable upper-arm design, the Garmin HRM 600 if Garmin running dynamics and standalone Garmin recording justify its ecosystem focus, and the Polar Verity Sense if swimming and optical wear are your priorities.
