Apple Fitness+ can show workout metrics from a compatible Bluetooth-enabled third-party heart-rate monitor paired to your device, but Apple does not publish a model whitelist or certify the Polar H10 or Wahoo TICKR by name. The H10 and TICKR are plausible options because their manufacturers document Bluetooth heart-rate functionality; check that your specific monitor appears in the Fitness app’s pairing flow before relying on it.
Choose a monitor with Bluetooth support for Apple’s documented connection route, and confirm your Apple device and software meet current requirements. A third-party monitor can provide heart rate, calories burned, and the Burn Bar, but it does not provide every metric available with Apple Watch.
What heart rate monitor works with Apple Fitness+?
Apple says a compatible Bluetooth-enabled third-party heart-rate monitor can provide onscreen metrics during a Fitness+ activity when paired to the device. Apple’s cited support pages do not list specific certified third-party models, so Bluetooth capability makes a monitor a candidate, not a guaranteed match.
The Polar H10 heart-rate sensor and Wahoo TICKR are plausible chest-strap options. Polar documents Bluetooth heart-rate transmission for the H10, and Wahoo documents Bluetooth and iOS support for TICKR. Neither manufacturer’s documentation establishes Apple Fitness+ model certification. Wahoo’s separate guidance about pairing TICKR with Apple Watch Workout should not be taken as proof of Fitness+ compatibility.

- WORKS WITH EVERYTHING: Polar HRM works with ALL HRM compatible Equipment.
- SUPREME ACCURACY: Widely recognized for its top precision by many sources, Polar H10 is the most accurate heart rate sensor in Polar's history. Polar H10 provides top quality measurement.
- CONNECTIVITY: Bluetooth, ANT plus and 5 kHz provide an excellent variety of connection options. You can use Bluetooth and ANT plus connections simultaneously as well as two Bluetooth connections simultaneously.
- POLAR PRO CHEST STRAP: With improved electrodes, an easy-to-use buckle and silicone dots, the strap is comfortable and interference-free.
- VERSATILITY: Polar H10 is fully waterproof and it has internal memory for multiple hours.
Apple’s Fitness+ activity guide says compatible Bluetooth third-party monitors can show heart rate, calories burned, and the Burn Bar. Apple Watch can show additional metrics such as Activity rings. Do not assume that a third-party monitor supplies every Apple Watch metric.
Bluetooth monitor options to consider
| Monitor | Form factor | What manufacturer documentation supports | Fitness+ compatibility caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Polar H10 | Chest strap | Polar documents Bluetooth and ANT+ transmission and compatibility with devices supporting the heart-rate service. | Apple does not name or certify the H10; confirm pairing on your device. |
| Wahoo TICKR | Chest strap | Wahoo documents Bluetooth, ANT+, and iOS support. | Wahoo’s Apple Watch Workout guidance is separate from Fitness+ certification; confirm pairing in Fitness. |
These are candidates to investigate, not a tested ranking. The available sources do not provide independent comparative accuracy testing or establish that chest straps outperform optical monitors in every workout. Consider fit and comfort, Bluetooth support, and whether manufacturer documentation covers your Apple device.

What should you check before buying?
- Bluetooth: Bluetooth support is required for Apple’s documented pairing route. ANT+ alone is not the documented iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV route.
- Your Apple device and software: Apple’s Australia support page lists iPhone with iOS 26 or later, iPad with iPadOS 26 or later, or Apple TV HD/4K with tvOS 26 or later for the third-party Bluetooth-monitor onscreen-metrics route. Requirements can change and may vary by locale, so check Apple’s current guidance.
- Fit and comfort: A chest strap may suit your workout preferences, but the sources do not support a universal accuracy ranking against optical sensors.
- Manufacturer compatibility guidance: Check the current monitor instructions for your Apple device and any setup steps. For example, Polar says its sensor family supports iOS 13 or later while cautioning that compatibility can vary.
How do you connect a heart-rate monitor to Apple Fitness+?
Apple’s current iPhone guide describes pairing from Fitness app’s Heart Rate Devices controls. Keep the monitor close, enable Bluetooth, and follow any initial setup steps required by its manufacturer.
- Wear or activate the monitor according to its manufacturer’s instructions.
- On iPhone, open Fitness and go to Workout, then select Heart Rate Devices.
- Choose Bluetooth Settings and follow the prompts to start pairing and select the monitor.
- Start a Fitness+ workout and check whether the expected metrics appear onscreen.
- If pairing fails, check Bluetooth, the monitor’s charge and setup, and the current Apple and manufacturer support instructions. Do not assume a companion app must remain open unless the manufacturer says so.
Apple’s Fitness app guide describes this pairing flow. Interfaces and compatibility can change, so consult Apple’s current instructions for your device and software.

Do you need an Apple Watch for Apple Fitness+?
No. A third-party Bluetooth heart-rate monitor can provide certain onscreen metrics when compatible and paired, and Apple Fitness+ supports a Bluetooth-monitor route without requiring an Apple Watch. Apple says those third-party-monitor metrics can include heart rate, calories burned, and the Burn Bar; some other metrics, such as Activity rings, are available with Apple Watch.

Can I use a heart-rate monitor with Apple Fitness+?
Yes, if it is a compatible Bluetooth-enabled third-party heart-rate monitor and is paired to your device. Apple confirms the category but does not publish a model whitelist in the cited support pages.

Can I use a Polar H10 with Apple Fitness+?
The H10 is a plausible candidate because Polar documents Bluetooth heart-rate transmission and compatibility with devices supporting the heart-rate service. Apple does not name or certify the H10 specifically, so check whether it appears in the Fitness app’s Heart Rate Devices pairing flow.
Does Wahoo TICKR work with Apple Fitness+?
Wahoo documents TICKR’s Bluetooth and iOS support, making it a plausible option. Its separate guidance about Apple Watch Workout does not establish Fitness+ certification; verify pairing with your device.
