Best Hiking Sandals for Men: Choose the Right Pair for Your Trail

The right hiking sandal depends on your trail and fit. Compare five options for toe protection, minimalist flexibility, support, and water use.

The best hiking sandals for men depend on where you hike and what your feet need: toe coverage for rocky routes, a supportive footbed for long days, or a lighter, more flexible feel for water crossings and easy trails. These five well-documented options illustrate the main tradeoffs; they are not a verified list of nine tested winners.

How to choose hiking sandals

Start with your route, then compare protection, fit, grip, support, weight, and drying behavior. A sandal that feels secure on a rocky approach may feel too structured for someone who prefers a minimalist design, and open styles leave more of the foot exposed.

  • Terrain and water: Consider whether you need a sandal for rocky trails, river crossings, or mostly dry paths. Check the outsole and how the straps and footbed behave when wet.
  • Toe protection: A closed toe offers more coverage from bumps and debris, but adds bulk compared with an open design.
  • Support and cushioning: Structured footbeds can feel stable and cushioned; flexible, low-profile sandals may suit hikers who prefer more ground feel. Neither style is right for every foot.
  • Fit and adjustment: Straps should hold the foot securely without rubbing. Check whether you can adjust them easily, and try the fit with the socks you expect to wear.
  • Weight and drying: More structure can mean more weight. For water use, consider how quickly the materials dry; a sandal that stays damp may be uncomfortable on a long outing.
  • Break-in and durability: Give straps and footbeds time to reveal hot spots before committing to a long hike. Replaceable components may matter if you expect frequent use.

Hiking sandal options by use case

The products below are candidates from published buying guides, not a reconstruction of a nine-product ranking. The cited outlets’ picks and test observations are their own editorial judgments.

Model Consider it for Tradeoff to weigh
Bedrock Cairn Evo 3D Pro A light, flexible minimalist style with adjustable straps and replaceable soles Less structure and arch support than support-focused designs; fit preference is especially important
KEEN Newport H2 Closed-toe coverage on rocky trails or around water More coverage and bulk than an open sandal; confirm the fit and current price
Teva Hurricane XLT2 An adjustable all-around option with an EVA footbed and nylon shank Outdoor Life notes that it can take time to dry
Chaco Z/1 Classic Hikers who prioritize a supportive, adjustable fit CleverHiker describes it as relatively heavy compared with lighter sandals
Teva Terra Fi 5 Universal A sturdy-sole option with quick-drying materials, according to Travel + Leisure Travel + Leisure warns that a misaligned strap may chafe

For a lightweight, flexible feel: Bedrock Cairn Evo 3D Pro

CleverHiker highlights the Cairn Evo 3D Pro for low weight, traction, adjustability, flexibility, durability, and replaceable soles. Its 2026 guide says its testers used one pair for 1,000 miles in the Colorado Rockies. That is a report about that pair and those testers, not a promise of lifespan for every pair. If you are accustomed to a cushioned or highly supportive footbed, try the minimalist feel before choosing it for a demanding route. Read CleverHiker’s guide.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

For toe coverage: KEEN Newport H2

The Newport H2 is a closed-toe sandal to consider when exposed toes are a concern. KEEN describes its rubber toe bumper as protection for “craggy trails to rocky riverbeds,” and its US product page also highlights forefoot room and heel security. Those are manufacturer descriptions, not independent test findings. The US page listed the sandal at $130 when accessed; price and availability can change. Check KEEN’s product page.

For an adjustable all-around option: Teva Hurricane XLT2

Outdoor Life names the Hurricane XLT2 best overall in its own guide. It lists a hook-and-loop closure, EVA footbed, nylon shank, and rubber outsole, while noting that the sandal can take time to dry. Treat “best overall” as that guide’s editorial pick, not a universal ranking. See Outdoor Life’s comparison.

For a more supportive feel: Chaco Z/1 Classic

CleverHiker describes the Z/1 Classic as stable and supportive, with the weight tradeoff of being relatively heavy compared with lighter sandals. It may suit hikers who value structure and an adjustable fit more than minimizing weight. Compare the strap feel and weight with other options before deciding. See CleverHiker’s assessment.

How to check fit before a hike

  1. Adjust every strap: Secure the sandal so your foot does not slide, but avoid tightening straps until they press or rub.
  2. Walk on an incline if possible: Notice whether your heel lifts or your toes push against the front during downhill steps.
  3. Check for rubbing: Walk long enough to spot hot spots around the toes, instep, and heel. Reposition adjustable straps and reassess.
  4. Test the intended conditions: If you plan to cross water, check how the sandal feels wet and whether it dries at a pace that works for your outing.
  5. Build up gradually: Wear a new pair on shorter walks before relying on it for a long hike.

What these recommendations can—and cannot—establish

Current comparison guides group sandals differently and make picks based on their own criteria. Their reviews can help narrow the field, but they do not establish one best model for every hiker. The available information also does not verify a particular nine-sandal lineup, a shared testing protocol, or firsthand testing by this article’s publisher. Choose by your route and fit rather than treating any one outlet’s ranking as definitive.
