The best sleep-tracking setup for most iPhone owners is Apple Health paired with an Apple Watch. It is the lowest-friction option if you already wear an Apple Watch to bed. Choose AutoSleep if you want deeper analysis, Sleep Cycle if you do not own a wearable, Pillow if audio and sleep aids matter most, RISE if you want sleep-debt coaching, or Oura if you are willing to buy a smart ring and pay for its connected service.
These are not interchangeable apps. Apple Watch and Oura collect data from dedicated hardware, Sleep Cycle primarily uses the iPhone, and RISE is mainly an interpretation and behavior-change layer that imports data from other trackers. The right choice depends first on what you wear to bed and then on the kind of feedback you actually want.
Quick comparison
The table below separates phone-only apps from hardware-dependent ecosystems. A smart alarm, sleep-stage chart, or readiness score is only useful if the app can collect the relevant data consistently.
| App or ecosystem | Required hardware | Phone-only tracking | Best feature | Alarm, audio, or snoring | Apple Health | Cost model |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Apple Health + Apple Watch | Apple Watch for automatic sleep stages | No | Best default and lowest-friction Apple setup | Sleep schedules, Sleep Focus, Wind Down, alarms | Native | Apple Watch purchase; native features are part of Apple’s Health and Sleep system |
| AutoSleep | Apple Watch for full analysis | Only limited time-in-bed estimation without the Watch | Detailed Apple Watch trends and analysis | Smart alarm and live sleep tracking | Reads and writes sleep data | U.S. App Store listing describes a one-time purchase; verify the current storefront |
| Sleep Cycle | iPhone; Apple Watch compatibility is also listed | Yes | Phone-first tracking, smart alarm, and sound insights | Smart alarm and snore monitoring | Availability depends on current permissions and version | Free and Premium features; packaging varies by region and version |
| Pillow | iPhone, iPad, or Apple Watch; Watch improves the hardware data | Yes for some functions | Audio recordings, notes, sleep aids, and Apple integration | Smart alarm, meditations, stories, soundscapes, and music | Yes | Many advanced features are Premium |
| RISE | Imported data from Apple Health, Apple Watch, Fitbit, Oura, or other trackers | Not primarily a standalone sensor app | Sleep debt, sleep hours, and behavior coaching | Coaching rather than sensor-led alarm features | Yes, as an important data source | Check the current app version for plans and integrations |
| Oura App + Oura Ring | Oura Ring | No | Discreet ring-based sleep tracking | Sleep-stage views, widgets, and broader recovery data | Works alongside Apple Health | Ring purchase plus membership-dependent features |
Feature names, prices, subscriptions, iOS and watchOS requirements, and regional availability can change. Confirm the current App Store listing or manufacturer documentation before buying.

1. Apple Health + Apple Watch: best default for Apple users
If you already own an Apple Watch and are comfortable wearing it overnight, start with Apple’s native Sleep and Health apps before installing anything else. The system is integrated into the iPhone and Watch, requires no separate sleep-analysis subscription for the native features described here, and keeps scheduling, sleep data, and notifications in one place.
When worn to bed, a supported Apple Watch can estimate time spent awake and in REM, Core, and Deep sleep. The paired iPhone adds that information to the Health app, where you can review sleep duration, stage breakdowns, recent history, comparisons with heart rate and respiratory rate, and—on supported Watch models—nightly changes in wrist temperature.
The Watch is not simply recording the moment you fall asleep. Apple’s Sleep system also supports a sleep goal, recurring schedules, separate schedules for weekdays and weekends, Wind Down, Sleep Focus, and alarms. On supported Watch software, the Sleep app can show recent sleep history and a sleep score based on estimated sleep duration, bedtime consistency, and interruptions. Treat that score as a convenient summary, not a definitive judgment about sleep quality.
How to set up Apple sleep tracking
- Open the Health app on your iPhone and open Browse > Sleep.
- Use the sleep setup or schedule controls to set a sleep goal, bedtime, wake time, and any weekday or weekend variations.
- Enable Sleep Focus if you want the iPhone and Watch to reduce interruptions during the scheduled period.
- Wear the Apple Watch to bed with a comfortable, secure fit. Apple requires at least one hour of wear for sleep data and recommends charging the Watch to at least 30 percent before bedtime.
- In the morning, return to Health > Browse > Sleep to inspect the sleep stages and trends. Labels and menu locations can vary slightly by iOS and watchOS version.
Who should choose it: Apple Watch owners who want dependable integration, automatic tracking, schedules, and a quick overview without maintaining another app.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat it does not do: it does not turn the Apple Watch into a clinical sleep laboratory. Sleep stages are estimates, and Apple explicitly describes wrist temperature as non-medical. Automatic sleep-stage tracking also depends on having the Watch; the iPhone alone cannot reproduce the native Apple Watch sleep-stage experience.
If you are buying a compatible watch primarily for this use, an Apple Watch for sleep tracking is the most direct hardware route into Apple’s native system. Choose based on comfort, battery habits, and compatibility with your iPhone rather than assuming that a more expensive model automatically produces a medically better sleep result.
2. AutoSleep: best for deeper Apple Watch analysis
AutoSleep is the specialist choice for people who find Apple’s native summaries too basic. It automatically analyzes Apple Watch data and does not require you to press a start button each night. Its dashboard and history are designed for readers who want to examine patterns rather than only check last night’s total.
AutoSleep’s official documentation describes sleep duration, sleep quality, sleep bank, heart-rate and sleep-stage analysis, readiness, bedtime recommendations, smart alarms, live sleep tracking, trends, calendar history, exports, HomeKit support, and the ability to write sleep data to Apple Health. The U.S. App Store listing also describes integrations and views involving Apple Sleep Stages, respiration rate, environmental noise, sleep apnea-related information, blood oxygen, readiness, temperature, sleep consistency, widgets, exports, and history.
That long feature list is useful only if you understand the hardware requirement. AutoSleep can estimate time in bed when you do not wear an Apple Watch overnight, but its fuller sleep-session analysis depends on Watch data. It is therefore an Apple Watch analytics app, not a genuinely phone-only alternative.
Who should choose it: Apple Watch owners who want longer-term trends, sleep-bank or readiness concepts, more detailed charts, calendar history, exports, and a specialist dashboard alongside Apple Health.

- A FULL-FEATURED HEALTH TRACKER—Apple Watch Series 11 gives you invaluable insights about your body, right from your wrist. Trade-offs: the extra detail can encourage overinterpretation. A readiness score or estimated sleep stage is still derived from consumer-device signals, not direct measurement of brain activity. AutoSleep’s privacy and on-device processing statements should be understood as the developer’s own claims, not as independent clinical validation. The U.S. App Store listing currently describes a one-time purchase, but confirm the price and terms in your local storefront.
3. Sleep Cycle: best phone-first option
If you do not own an Apple Watch, Sleep Cycle is the clearest starting point in this group. It is designed to work with the iPhone near the bed and combines sleep tracking, morning analysis, a smart alarm, and snore monitoring. The App Store listing identifies iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch compatibility, but its strongest differentiator remains the ability to begin without buying a wearable.
Recommended Free Tools
Sleep Cycle is a good fit for someone who wants a morning-oriented report rather than a large health dashboard. The app uses phone-based motion and sound information to infer sleep-related patterns, then presents those patterns in a way intended to help with wake-up timing and nightly comparisons. Its current product materials also describe Luma, an in-app sleep assistant that can have general conversations on free and Premium tiers. Personalized insights based on the user’s own tracked sleep require Premium according to those materials.
Who should choose it: phone-only users who want a smart alarm, sound-based insights, and snore monitoring without wearing a watch or ring.
How to use it well: place the iPhone near the bed as instructed by the app, keep its microphone permissions limited to what you are comfortable granting, and use the same setup for several nights before judging the trends. Changing the phone’s position or sleeping environment can change sound and movement readings.
Trade-offs: phone-based motion and sound analysis cannot be treated as equivalent to laboratory polysomnography. It may be useful for observing routines or possible snoring patterns, but it does not diagnose sleep apnea or prove the exact timing of sleep stages. Premium features, assistant availability, and pricing can change by region and app version.

Pillow is worth considering when the sleep app needs to do more than measure. It supports iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch, and combines sleep analysis with audio recordings, heart-rate analysis, notes, mood tracking, and sleep-aid content.
The app’s smart alarm is intended to wake the user during a lighter estimated sleep stage. Its broader feature set includes naps, sleep trends, sleep-history analysis, Apple Health comparisons, sound recordings, CSV export, meditations, bedtime stories, soundscapes, and music. Many of the more advanced functions are listed as Premium features in the U.S. App Store.
Who should choose it: Apple users who want a polished combination of tracking, audio recordings, mood or note-taking, smart wake-up, and guided content for winding down.

Trade-offs: Pillow’s value depends heavily on which Premium features you intend to use. Review the current subscription terms before starting a trial. Audio recording also creates a privacy issue that a basic sleep-stage app may not: a microphone can capture a partner, child, or other person in a shared bedroom. Review microphone access under Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone, and avoid recording in circumstances where everyone affected has not agreed.

5. RISE: best for sleep debt and behavior coaching
RISE takes a different approach from AutoSleep and Sleep Cycle. It is less about presenting another detailed sensor dashboard and more about turning sleep duration and daily activity into guidance about sleep debt, energy, and behavior.
According to its App Store listing, RISE can use Apple Health, Apple Watch, Fitbit, Oura, and data from other sleep trackers to determine sleep hours, sleep debt, daily steps, and activity-related sleep patterns. That makes it particularly useful for someone trying to connect late nights, inconsistent schedules, exercise, and accumulated sleep loss.
Who should choose it: users who want a coaching-oriented interpretation of their data and are motivated by practical behavior changes rather than by examining every estimated sleep stage.
Trade-offs: RISE depends substantially on imported data. It should not be presented as the best standalone sensor-based tracker, and its conclusions are only as useful as the sleep and activity data available from connected sources. Check the current app version for supported integrations, feature availability, and pricing before committing.
6. Oura App + Oura Ring: best ring-based alternative
Oura belongs in this comparison, but it should not be described as an iPhone-only app. The Oura App is the software interface; the Oura Ring is the hardware that supplies the primary sleep data. You are buying a separate wearable ecosystem, not downloading a free replacement for Apple Health.
Oura’s support documentation says the app supports iOS 16 and higher and requires Bluetooth 5.0 on supported iPhones. Through the ring, the app provides sleep-stage views covering Awake, REM, light, and deep sleep. It also offers iOS widgets for recent sleep stages, sleep and wake times, and ring battery status.
Some features, including Body Clock and chronotype views on Gen3 or later, require an active membership. That means the realistic comparison is not merely Oura versus a paid sleep app; it is ring hardware plus any ongoing membership cost versus an Apple Watch, an iPhone-only app, or software that uses hardware you already own.
Who should choose it: users who prefer a discreet ring form factor, want a dedicated sleep and recovery ecosystem, and accept the extra hardware and service costs.

If you are researching a smart ring sleep tracker, compare comfort, battery, return terms, data access, and recurring costs—not just the number of metrics shown in the app.
Which iPhone sleep tracker should you choose?
You already wear an Apple Watch: start with Apple Health and Sleep. Add AutoSleep if you want deeper trends, exports, sleep-bank or readiness analysis, or a specialist view.
You do not own a wearable: choose Sleep Cycle for phone-first tracking, a smart alarm, and sound or snore monitoring.
You want sleep aids and recordings: choose Pillow, especially if meditations, stories, soundscapes, notes, and mood tracking are more important than a minimalist dashboard.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
You are trying to correct an irregular routine: consider RISE for sleep debt and behavior coaching, provided you can connect a useful data source.
You dislike wearing a watch at night: consider Oura only if a ring suits you and the total cost of the ring plus membership is acceptable.
You want the simplest starting point: use Apple’s native Health and Sleep features if you already have an Apple Watch. If you do not, begin with Sleep Cycle before buying hardware simply to obtain a sleep chart.
How accurate are iPhone sleep-tracking apps?
Consumer sleep apps and wearables estimate sleep duration, awakenings, stages, or related metrics using combinations of motion, heart rate, respiratory signals, sound, temperature, or imported data. They do not directly measure sleep in the same way as a clinical polysomnography test, which can include brain-wave, eye-movement, muscle, heart, and breathing measurements.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The practical implication is that these apps are better at showing patterns than proving an exact number for a single night. A consistent bedtime, a major reduction in total sleep, repeated awakenings, or a trend that matches how you feel may be useful. A disagreement between Apple Health, AutoSleep, Sleep Cycle, Pillow, and Oura does not necessarily mean that one app is malfunctioning; each may be interpreting different signals with a different algorithm.
Do not use an app’s sleep-stage graph, readiness score, wrist-temperature change, or snore recording as a diagnosis. Apple describes wrist temperature as non-medical, and consumer sleep apps warn that their results are estimates rather than substitutes for professional care.

When an app is not enough
Speak with a clinician rather than relying on an app if you have persistent insomnia, suspected sleep apnea, unusually severe daytime sleepiness, repeated gasping or choking during sleep, loud frequent snoring with witnessed breathing pauses, or another concerning symptom. A sleep tracker can provide a useful diary to discuss, but it cannot rule out a disorder or replace a medical evaluation or sleep study.
Privacy and permissions checklist
Sleep tracking can involve sensitive health, movement, heart-rate, respiratory, temperature, microphone, or bedroom-audio data. Before enabling every feature:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- In the Health app, review which apps can read or write sleep, heart, activity, and other health categories.
- Give microphone access only to apps whose sound or snore features you actually plan to use.
- For Pillow or Sleep Cycle, think about whether audio could capture another person in the room.
- Read the current App Store privacy label and the developer’s privacy policy; labels and policies can change.
- Review whether an app stores data on the device, synchronizes it through Apple Health, uploads it to a service, or uses it for optional assistant or coaching features.
- Do not assume that a privacy claim made by a developer is independent validation. Treat AutoSleep’s on-device privacy statements as the developer’s own claims and verify the permissions shown on your devices.
Before you install: a practical test
- Choose the data source first. Decide whether you will wear an Apple Watch, place an iPhone near the bed, import data into RISE, or wear an Oura Ring.
- Check comfort and battery. A watch left charging overnight produces no sleep record. A ring or watch that disrupts sleep is also a poor fit even if its charts look impressive.
- Start with one system. Running several trackers simultaneously can create confusing, conflicting estimates and duplicate Apple Health entries.
- Track for at least several nights. Look for recurring patterns instead of judging an app from one unusually good or bad night.
- Decide what action the data supports. If the answer is an earlier bedtime, a more regular schedule, less late caffeine, or medical advice, the app has done its job. More metrics are not automatically more useful.
Prices, ratings, subscription tiers, supported iOS and watchOS versions, privacy labels, integrations, and AI-assistant availability are volatile. Confirm them immediately before publication or purchase, particularly for Sleep Cycle, Pillow, RISE, AutoSleep, and Oura.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best free sleep-tracking app for iPhone?
For users who already own an Apple Watch, Apple Health and the native Sleep features are the simplest starting point. Without a Watch, Sleep Cycle is the strongest phone-first option in this comparison, although some features may require Premium and its current packaging can vary by region.
Can an iPhone track sleep without an Apple Watch?
Yes. Sleep Cycle is designed to work with the iPhone near the bed, and Pillow supports some phone-based functions. Phone-only apps use signals such as sound and motion, so they estimate sleep rather than directly measuring sleep stages.
Is AutoSleep better than Apple Health?
AutoSleep is better suited to Apple Watch owners who want detailed charts, trends, sleep-bank or readiness analysis, exports, and a specialist dashboard. Apple Health is the better default for simplicity, scheduling, and native integration. Neither should be treated as clinically definitive.
Recommended Free Tools
Can these apps detect sleep apnea?
No sleep-stage chart or snore monitor in this list should be treated as a diagnosis. Repeated breathing pauses, gasping, loud frequent snoring, severe daytime sleepiness, or other symptoms should be assessed by a clinician, who may recommend formal testing.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Apple Watch owners should begin with Apple Health and add AutoSleep only if they want more analysis. People without a wearable should try Sleep Cycle. Choose Pillow for audio and sleep aids, RISE for sleep-debt coaching, and Oura only when a dedicated ring ecosystem makes sense for your budget and comfort. Whichever you choose, use the results to spot habits and trends—not to diagnose a sleep disorder.
