For workouts and outdoor trips without carrying a phone, look for a GPS watch that can record activities and store music onboard. That does not necessarily let you make calls or receive messages: GPS, downloaded audio, notifications, and cellular service are separate capabilities, with different phone and plan requirements.
What “phone-free” means on a smartwatch
A watch can be phone-free for some tasks and still depend on a phone for others. A GPS sports watch with onboard music may record a run and play downloaded tracks while your phone stays home. Notifications, calls, messages, music downloads, setup, and cellular data can each have separate requirements.

- Workout tracking: The watch uses its own GPS to record activity.
- Listening: Music or playlists are stored on the watch and played through Bluetooth headphones. Downloading tracks may require an account, subscription, and an internet-connected device.
- Notifications and messaging: These may require a paired phone, even when workout tracking and stored music work independently.
- Calls and data: Independent communication typically requires a cellular-capable watch, compatible phone setup, and wireless service plan.
A concrete sports-watch example: Garmin Forerunner 955
Garmin’s Singapore product page lists the Forerunner 955 as a GPS triathlon watch with phone-free music. Garmin says users can download songs and playlists from Spotify or Deezer accounts for listening without a phone; a subscription may be required. This is a specific example of a watch that can support phone-free workouts and listening, not proof that every music-capable watch has the same features or requirements. Battery figures depend on what the watch is doing
Garmin lists these maximum battery estimates for the Forerunner 955. They are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results; the GPS and music mode matters when planning a long outing.

If you need calls or messages without your phone
Choose and verify a cellular smartwatch, rather than assuming that GPS or onboard music provides independent communication. Service depends on the exact watch generation, phone compatibility, carrier, region, and plan.
For example, Apple’s technical specifications for Apple Watch Ultra 2 require an iPhone XS or later with iOS 18 or later. Cellular service requires a wireless plan, and availability and results vary by carrier and conditions. Apple’s battery estimates also depend on use, configuration, network, and signal conditions. Apple presents Ultra as its sports and adventure line, and describes some watch and AirPods functions that work without an iPhone. Those capabilities do not remove the separate compatibility and plan requirements for cellular service. Apple Watch family.
How to choose a watch for your kind of outing
For running or training without a phone
Prioritize independent GPS activity recording, onboard music storage if you want audio, and battery figures for the GPS mode you expect to use. Check how music gets onto the watch and whether your streaming account requires a subscription. If you do not need to call or message, paying for cellular capability may not solve a problem you have.

For hiking and longer outdoor routes
Work out whether you need a recorded track, breadcrumb guidance, or offline maps. These are different navigation needs; confirm the exact model’s mapping and route features, including regional availability, rather than inferring them from “GPS” on the product name. The manufacturer pages cited here do not establish a reliable, current cross-brand comparison of route and map capabilities.
For trips where being reachable matters
Check cellular compatibility with your phone and carrier, the need for a separate or eligible wireless plan, and local network coverage. A cellular watch can still be affected by signal conditions, and the watch’s own battery estimate may change with network use.

For comfort over many hours
Compare actual case fit and weight alongside battery life and display preferences. Garmin lists the Forerunner 955 at 52 g, but the available specifications do not support ranking it against current alternatives on comfort or weight.

The right watch depends on what you mean by phone-free, the activity and route needs, your phone platform, and how often you are willing to charge. Garmin’s 2023 annual report names Apple, COROS, Polar, and Suunto among competitors in fitness or outdoor product lines; that identifies category competitors, not a current head-to-head winner.
