If you want an automatic watch for swimming or scuba diving, look for a clearly identified diver’s watch and check the exact reference’s water-resistance rating and standards claims. These four manufacturer-documented options range from 200 m to 300 m: the Seiko Prospex SPB175, Seiko Prospex SRPE05, Citizen Promaster NB6004-83E and Tissot Seastar 1000 Powermatic 80 T1204071704100. Their specifications make them useful candidates to compare, not a hands-on-tested ranking or a substitute for a dive computer.
What “waterproof” means for an automatic watch
In watch specifications, “water-resistant” is the more accurate term. A depth rating is a manufacturer’s stated specification, not a guarantee that a watch will remain safe at that depth in every real-world situation or after wear, impact or servicing. Nor does a depth number alone establish that a watch is intended for scuba diving.
ISO 22810:2010 sets requirements and test methods for verifying water resistance in watches intended for everyday use and activities such as swimming. The International Organization for Standardization says the edition was reviewed and confirmed in 2021 and remains current. ISO 6425:2018, by contrast, covers diver’s watches designed to withstand diving at depths of at least 100 m and to include a secured dive-time measuring system visible in darkness.
Those standards are not interchangeable. Citizen says it reserves the term “diver’s watch” for watches conforming to ISO 6425, which includes criteria beyond water resistance, such as visibility, magnetic resistance, shock resistance and strap strength. A stated depth rating should not be described as ISO certification unless the manufacturer says the particular reference conforms.

How to choose the right model for your use
For swimming and everyday water exposure
Start with the manufacturer’s exact rating and intended-use description for the reference you are considering. ISO 22810 addresses general water-resistant watches, including those intended for swimming; a swimming-capable rating does not, by itself, make a watch a scuba diver’s watch. If scuba use matters, prefer a model explicitly presented for that purpose and check whether its manufacturer claims ISO 6425 conformity.

- Round watch featuring corrugated unidirectional bezel, luminous hands/markers, and magnified date window at 3 o'clock
- 40 mm, Length: 210mm, 23k gold-plated stainless steel case with mineral dial window. Movement Caliber: NH35A
- Japanese automatic movement with analog display
- Gold & Stainless steel tone bracelet with foldover clasp with safety closure
- Water resistant to 200 m (660 ft): In general, suitable for professional marine activity and serious surface water sports, but not scuba diving.
For scuba diving
Among these examples, Seiko describes the SPB175 as a diver’s watch, says the SRPE05 follows ISO scuba-diving standards, Citizen describes the NB6004-83E as suitable for scuba diving and ISO compliant, and Tissot lists 300 m / 30 bar for the specified Seastar reference. These are manufacturer descriptions, not independent certification checks. Do not use a wristwatch in place of a dive computer or rely on its depth rating as a dive plan.
For fit and comfort
Diameter is only one part of fit. Compare thickness, lug-to-lug length, bracelet or strap, and clasp adjustment where those measurements are available; a watch with a high rating can still wear poorly on your wrist. The SPB175 is listed at 45 mm in diameter and 12.9 mm thick, while the Tissot reference is 43 mm. The cited manufacturer details do not establish all dimensions for every model, so check the full specification and try the watch on when possible.
Rank #3

For a longer interval off the wrist
Power reserve tells you approximately how long a fully wound mechanical watch can run without further winding or movement. Seiko lists approximately 70 hours for the SPB175’s 6R35 and approximately 41 hours for the SRPE05’s 4R36. These figures apply to those references and movements; they should not be generalized across Seiko or other model families.
For material preferences
The Citizen NB6004-83E is described by Citizen as Super Titanium, making it a relevant comparison if case material and a lighter-wearing alternative to steel are priorities. The available manufacturer details cited here do not establish a comparative weight, so assess the actual watch and bracelet rather than assuming a particular weight advantage.
Rank #4
- Steel and gold tone stainless steel case 40mm diameter x 14mm thick; Exhibition case back; Black dial; Luminous hands and hour markers
- NH35A Japanese Automatic movement, 24 jewel; Assembled in Malaysia; Watch weight: 152 grams

- Mineral crystal; Screw-down crown; Unidirectional stainless steel bezel with black top bezel ring; 200 meter water resistant: Suitable for professional marine activity and surface water sports. Suitable for diving.
- Automatic movement means that this timeless watch powers a quality Japanese-automatic movement with the simple movement of your arm.
How to compare before buying
- Confirm the reference: Prospex and Seastar are model families, not single specifications. Match the full reference number to the manufacturer page and seller listing.
- Match activity to the claim: Distinguish general water resistance from an explicitly stated scuba-diving purpose and any specific ISO 6425 claim.
- Check wearability: Compare dimensions, bracelet or strap fit, clasp adjustment and legibility in person where possible.
- Check the movement details: Consider winding, stated power reserve and the service support available in your region.
- Verify the transaction: Confirm local price, stock, warranty coverage, return terms and authorized service options with the manufacturer or seller before purchase.
There is no universal winner in these specifications alone. The SPB175 is a steel option with a stated approximately 70-hour reserve; the SRPE05 is another Seiko scuba-oriented reference with a shorter stated reserve; the Citizen pairs its stated scuba use with Super Titanium; and the specified Tissot has the highest stated depth rating among these examples. Which trade-off matters most depends on your activity, fit and regional buying options.
