Best Waterproof Smartwatches for Swimming, Sports, and Diving

The best water-resistant smartwatch depends on your phone and activity: Apple Watch Ultra 3 for iPhone, Galaxy Watch Ultra for Android, Garmin for training, and Descent Mk3i for diving.

The best “waterproof” smartwatch is the one whose manufacturer supports your actual activity. For iPhone owners, the Apple Watch Ultra 3 is the best overall choice. Android users should look at the Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra; multisport athletes should consider the Garmin fēnix 8; and divers should choose the Garmin Descent Mk3i. The Garmin Forerunner 970 is the lighter swim-and-triathlon option.

Technically, these watches are water resistant—not permanently waterproof. A 5 ATM, 10 ATM, or 20 ATM label describes pressure resistance under test conditions, not a universal diving depth or permission for high-speed water sports.

Best overall: the Apple Watch Ultra 3 is the strongest all-round choice for iPhone owners who want a premium smartwatch for swimming, open-water activity, and supported recreational diving. Android users should start with the Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra, while multisport athletes will usually get more practical value from the Garmin fēnix 8. For actual recreational diving, the specialist Garmin Descent Mk3i is the more appropriate tool.

One important correction: no smartwatch is permanently “waterproof.” These products are water resistant for specified conditions, and their seals can weaken with age, impact, chemicals, heat, or servicing. A 50-meter or 10 ATM label is not, by itself, permission to scuba dive, waterski, surf, or take the watch to that literal depth.

Best waterproof smartwatches at a glance

Watch Best for Water specification Main reason to choose it Important limitation
Apple Watch Ultra 3 iPhone owners wanting the best all-round water-ready smartwatch 100 m; EN13319-compliant Ultra guidance; IP6X dust resistance Broad smartwatch, health, swimming, open-water, and supported diving features Not permanently waterproof; recreational diving is limited to supported use up to 40 m
Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra Android and Samsung-phone users 10 ATM and IP68 Full smartwatch experience with stronger water protection than standard Galaxy Watch models Do not infer scuba or high-speed-water approval from 10 ATM alone
Garmin fēnix 8 Multisport athletes prioritizing training tools and battery life 10 ATM; dive functionality on supported models Physical controls, navigation, training metrics, rugged design, and multi-day endurance Features and battery vary by case, display, settings, and exact model
Garmin Descent Mk3i Recreational divers who need a real dive computer 20 ATM; documented depth sensor range of 0–200 m Dive modes, depth sensing, and dive-focused design are central to the product More specialized and generally more expensive than an everyday smartwatch
Garmin Forerunner 970 Runners and triathletes who want a lighter swim-training watch 5 ATM, equivalent to pressure at 50 m Advanced training and swim tracking in a focused sports design Position it for swimming, not scuba diving or high-pressure water sports

Our picks

1. Apple Watch Ultra 3 — best overall for iPhone users

The Apple Watch Ultra 3 is the best overall pick when you use an iPhone and want one watch for everyday notifications, health features, swimming, outdoor activity, and supported recreational diving.

Apple specifies a 100-meter water-resistance rating under ISO 22810:2010 and IP6X dust resistance for the Ultra 3. Apple’s broader guidance for Ultra and later Ultra models also identifies EN13319 compliance and support for high-speed water sports and recreational scuba diving to 40 meters. That combination gives the Ultra 3 the broadest water-use guidance in Apple’s current lineup and is why it leads this list.

The important qualification is that this is an editorial fit judgment based on Apple’s specifications and activity guidance, not a claim of independent laboratory or dive-computer testing. The 100-meter figure is a pressure-resistance classification, not a universal operating-depth guarantee.

  • Choose it if: you have an iPhone, want a conventional premium smartwatch, and may swim, snorkel, take part in open-water activities, or undertake supported recreational dives.
  • Do not choose it solely if: you need a dedicated technical dive computer, routinely exceed recreational limits, or want the longest possible battery life between charges.
  • Remember: Apple describes the watch as water resistant rather than waterproof. Seals can degrade through age, impact, chemical exposure, and servicing conditions.

2. Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra — best full smartwatch for Android users

The Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra is the most natural premium smartwatch choice for Android users, particularly owners of Samsung phones who want notifications, health tracking, apps, and a modern watch interface alongside stronger-than-basic water protection.

Samsung rates the Galaxy Watch Ultra at 10 ATM and IP68. Samsung describes the model as suitable for swimming and deeper-water activity than standard Galaxy Watch models. The two ratings are useful for different reasons: 10 ATM is a pressure-resistance classification, while IP68 is an ingress-protection classification for dust and water under specified test conditions. IP68 should not be treated as interchangeable with an ATM or ISO water-resistance rating.

That specification does not automatically authorize scuba diving, waterskiing, surfing, or every other high-speed water activity. Check Samsung’s instructions for the exact activity before relying on the watch in demanding conditions.

  • Choose it if: you want the most phone-like smartwatch experience among these Android-oriented options and regularly swim or expect substantial water exposure.
  • Choose Garmin instead if: battery endurance, mapping, physical controls, and structured training matter more than a broad smartwatch app ecosystem.
  • Check before ordering: regional model availability, phone compatibility, case size, cellular support, and the seller’s exact model number.

3. Garmin fēnix 8 — best for multisport athletes and long battery life

The Garmin fēnix 8 is the better choice for trail runners, hikers, triathletes, and multisport users who want a rugged training watch with physical controls, navigation, sport metrics, and multi-day battery life.

Garmin lists the fēnix 8 with a 10 ATM water rating. Garmin’s product materials also describe dive functionality up to 40 meters on supported models. That dive-specific design makes the fēnix 8 more relevant to demanding outdoor use than a generic smartwatch that merely carries an IP rating.

Battery claims need careful interpretation. The result varies substantially with case size, AMOLED or solar display, GPS mode, solar exposure, music, notifications, sensors, and other settings. Compare the battery figure for the exact configuration you plan to buy and the mode you will actually use; a headline smartwatch maximum is not the same as continuous GPS or dive-mode endurance.

  • Choose it if: your watch is primarily a training and navigation tool and you want less frequent charging than a conventional lifestyle smartwatch typically offers.
  • Choose the Descent instead if: diving is a central requirement and you need a purpose-built dive computer rather than a multisport watch with dive features.
  • Be precise about the model: “10 ATM” does not mean every fēnix 8 configuration supports every water activity or that every model has identical dive functions.

4. Garmin Descent Mk3i — best for serious recreational divers

The Garmin Descent Mk3i is the specialist choice for recreational divers who need a dive computer that also works as a smartwatch. It should not be presented simply as a tougher everyday watch.

Garmin’s Descent Mk3-series documentation lists a 20 ATM water rating and a depth sensor documented as accurate from 0 to 200 meters for the series. The manual also describes dive-oriented modes and capabilities. The depth-sensor range is not the same thing as a recommendation to dive to 200 meters; the safe operating depth depends on the specific device, dive mode, certification, equipment, conditions, and Garmin’s instructions.

This is the clearest specialist product in the group because depth sensing and dive functions are central to its purpose. The trade-off is price, size, complexity, and a less lifestyle-first buying proposition than the Apple or Samsung alternatives. If you only swim laps or occasionally snorkel, its specialist hardware may be unnecessary.

  • Choose it if: you need dive planning and logging functions, depth information, and a watch designed around recreational diving.
  • Do not buy it just for: pool swimming, occasional beach use, or a general desire for a “waterproof” smartwatch.
  • Before buying: confirm the exact 43-mm or 51-mm version, because battery behavior and physical characteristics differ considerably between configurations.

5. Garmin Forerunner 970 — best lighter training watch for swimmers and triathletes

The Garmin Forerunner 970 is a focused alternative to the larger fēnix 8. It suits runners and triathletes who want advanced training features and swim tracking in a lighter sports-watch design.

Garmin’s owner-manual specification lists the Forerunner 970 as “Swim, 5 ATM,” equivalent to pressure at 50 meters. Garmin also lists up to 32 GB of media storage in that specification. The 5 ATM rating makes it a legitimate swimming and training option when Garmin’s instructions permit the activity, but it should not be positioned as a dive watch or as a choice for high-pressure water sports.

  • Choose it if: swimming is part of a broader running or triathlon training plan and you value a lighter, more focused watch.
  • Choose the fēnix 8 instead if: you need a more rugged outdoor design, navigation, longer endurance, or supported dive functionality.
  • Skip it for diving: a 5 ATM swim rating is not a substitute for explicit dive support.

What do 5 ATM, 10 ATM, 20 ATM, and IP68 mean?

These labels describe different kinds of protection and should not be used as a simple ranking of how deep you can take a watch.

Label What it tells you What it does not tell you
5 ATM / 50 m Resistance to pressure roughly associated with 50 meters in a controlled test; commonly used for swimming watches That you can safely dive to 50 m, waterski, surf, or expose the watch to fast-moving water
10 ATM / 100 m A higher pressure-resistance class, common on rugged sport watches Automatic approval for scuba diving or every high-speed water activity
20 ATM A substantially higher pressure-resistance class; appropriate as a starting point for a dedicated dive computer when paired with explicit dive functions That the watch can be used to the equivalent pressure depth in every dive scenario
IP68 Ingress protection against dust and water under specified test conditions A swimming, diving, or dynamic-water rating equivalent to ATM or ISO testing

For practical buying, treat the activity guidance as controlling. A 5 ATM watch whose manufacturer explicitly supports swimming may be a sensible pool watch. A 10 ATM watch is a stronger fit for demanding exposure, but you still need activity-specific approval. A dive computer should have explicit dive modes and depth functionality, not just a large ATM number.

Swimming, snorkeling, surfing, and diving are not the same test

Pool and ordinary open-water swimming

A manufacturer-approved 5 ATM swim watch can be sufficient for ordinary pool or open-water swimming. The Forerunner 970 is the clearest example in this list. The Apple Watch Ultra 3, Galaxy Watch Ultra, and fēnix 8 provide a higher paper rating, but the most expensive option is not automatically the best swim tracker for every athlete.

Choose based on the rest of your needs: a full smartwatch for notifications, Garmin for training and battery life, or a lighter sports watch for triathlon. Rinse after chlorinated or saltwater exposure when the manufacturer recommends it.

Surfing, waterskiing, and high-speed water

High-speed water creates forces that a static pressure rating does not describe. Do not recommend a watch for surfing, waterskiing, or similar activities solely because the case says 50 meters or 10 ATM.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Apple’s standard Series 11 guidance is a useful illustration: despite its 50-meter water-resistance rating, Apple limits it to shallow-water swimming and excludes scuba diving, waterskiing, high-velocity water, and submersion below shallow depth. Apple’s Ultra guidance is broader, but users should still follow the Ultra-specific conditions rather than generalizing from the number on the case.

Recreational scuba diving

For supported recreational diving, the Apple Watch Ultra 3 has the broadest Apple activity guidance in this comparison, including recreational scuba diving to 40 meters. The fēnix 8 also has dive functionality on supported models. If diving is the primary purpose of the purchase, however, the Descent Mk3i is the more logical choice because it is designed as a dive computer rather than a smartwatch that happens to support diving.

Do not use a standard swim-rated watch as a dive computer. The watch must have explicit dive support, suitable sensors and modes, and instructions that cover your planned activity. Your training, dive equipment, environmental conditions, and certification remain more important than a marketing label.

How to choose the right water-resistant smartwatch

  1. Start with your phone ecosystem. iPhone owners should begin with the Apple Watch Ultra 3. Android users should consider the Galaxy Watch Ultra for a conventional full smartwatch. Garmin is the stronger ecosystem when training, mapping, physical controls, and endurance matter more than phone-like app integration.
  2. Define the actual water activity. “I swim twice a week” leads to a different purchase than “I scuba dive,” “I waterski,” or “I spend weeks on a sailing trip.” Swimming, high-speed water, and diving require separate checks.
  3. Look for activity-specific instructions. A 50-meter label is not enough for diving. A 10 ATM label is not enough for waterskiing. Manufacturer guidance for the exact model takes priority over general assumptions about ratings.
  4. Compare battery in the mode you use. Garmin’s maximums vary by case, display, solar conditions, GPS mode, and settings. Apple and Samsung provide a more conventional smartwatch experience but generally require more frequent charging. For long trips, charging convenience may matter more than the highest advertised number.
  5. Check size and controls. Larger rugged and dive watches can be easier to read and operate outdoors, but they may be less comfortable for sleep, formal wear, or smaller wrists. Physical buttons are useful with wet fingers and gloves.
  6. Check regional details. Cellular bands, available health features, phone compatibility, case sizes, software functions, pricing, and stock can vary by country and configuration.

What not to do with a water-resistant smartwatch

  • Do not call it permanently waterproof. Water resistance can diminish with age, impact, chemical exposure, heat, and servicing.
  • Do not use the depth number as a guaranteed dive limit. A pressure class or sensor range is not a universal operating-depth recommendation.
  • Do not take a swim watch scuba diving. Select a model with explicit dive support and follow its dive instructions.
  • Do not assume high-speed water is safe. Waterskiing, surfing, and similar activities can be excluded even when the watch carries a 50-meter rating.
  • Be cautious with hot tubs, saunas, steam, and heated water. Heat and steam can be harsher on seals and materials than ordinary swimming. Follow the exact manufacturer guidance instead of assuming that a swim rating covers them.
  • Limit chemical exposure. Saltwater, chlorine, cleaning products, and other chemicals can affect seals, finishes, and bands. Rinse the watch as directed after saltwater or chlorinated-water use.
  • Inspect the band and seals after damage. A cracked case, hard impact, or poorly performed service can change the watch’s water resistance even if it still appears to work normally.

Useful accessories and maintenance purchases

A worn or damaged strap is a practical reason to replace an accessory before the watch itself. Look for a replacement smartwatch band that matches the exact model, connector, case size, material, and intended activity. A band that fits an Apple Watch may not fit a Garmin or Galaxy Watch, and even different case sizes within one product family can require different lengths or connectors.

Which one should you buy?

Your priority Best fit Why
Best premium option for an iPhone Apple Watch Ultra 3 Strongest Apple water-use guidance, full smartwatch features, and supported swimming and recreational diving
Best full smartwatch for Android Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra 10 ATM and IP68 protection with a modern Android-oriented smartwatch experience
Best for multisport training and battery life Garmin fēnix 8 10 ATM protection, rugged controls, navigation, training metrics, and multi-day endurance
Best dedicated recreational dive computer Garmin Descent Mk3i 20 ATM rating, depth sensing, and dive-first functions
Best lighter swim and triathlon training watch Garmin Forerunner 970 5 ATM swim rating with a focused, lighter training-watch design

If you only need a watch for pool sessions, do not pay for a dive computer just because its ATM number is larger. If you dive, do not settle for a watch that only promises swimming. And if you are buying for surfing or waterskiing, verify explicit high-speed-water support for the exact model before purchase.

Testing and evidence note

This comparison uses the manufacturers’ stated specifications and water-use guidance supplied for these models. It does not claim independent testing of swim-count accuracy, GPS accuracy, heart-rate accuracy, durability, or dive-computer performance. Water resistance is a condition-specific property, not a guarantee against every form of water exposure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are any smartwatches truly waterproof?

No. “Waterproof” is a consumer term; manufacturers describe these watches as water resistant. Seals can weaken with age, impact, chemicals, heat, and servicing, so no rating promises permanent protection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does 5 ATM mean I can dive to 50 meters?

A 5 ATM or 50-meter rating describes controlled pressure resistance, not a guaranteed usable depth. It can be suitable for ordinary swimming when the manufacturer permits it, but it does not automatically authorize scuba diving, waterskiing, or surfing.

What is the best smartwatch for scuba diving?

Choose the Garmin Descent Mk3i if diving is the main purpose and you need a dedicated dive computer. The Apple Watch Ultra 3 and supported Garmin fēnix 8 models also have explicit dive-related capabilities, but a standard swim-rated smartwatch should not be used for scuba diving.

Is IP68 better than 10 ATM for swimming?

IP68 is an ingress-protection classification for dust and water under specified test conditions. It is not interchangeable with an ATM or ISO water-resistance rating and does not, by itself, tell you whether a watch is suitable for swimming or diving.

Which waterproof smartwatch is best for everyday use?

For iPhone owners, choose the Apple Watch Ultra 3 for the broadest premium smartwatch and water-use experience. Android users should consider the Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra for a full smartwatch, while Garmin is usually the better fit for training metrics, navigation, physical controls, and longer battery life.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: buy the Apple Watch Ultra 3 for the best all-round iPhone experience, the Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra for a premium Android smartwatch, the Garmin fēnix 8 for multisport endurance, the Garmin Descent Mk3i for dedicated recreational diving, or the Garmin Forerunner 970 for lighter swim and triathlon training. Match the watch to the activity—not just the ATM number—and remember that water resistance is never permanent.
