Rob Nudds’s 2020 review of the original BOLDR Expedition Eiger found a compact-feeling 41 mm tool watch with a striking fully lumed dial—and one practical drawback: the supplied EPDM strap. His praise is based on a few weeks of wear, not a standardized lume test. The watch now listed by BOLDR is the Expedition II Eiger, whose dimensions and several details differ from the reviewed model.
What made the original Eiger stand out
In his April 8, 2020 review for Fratello, Rob Nudds described wearing the original Expedition Eiger in his daily rotation for a few weeks. He had expected the crowns and case might feel cheap, and wondered whether a full-lume dial would look dull. His account says neither concern came true.
Nudds called the 41 mm watch compact on the wrist and praised the case shape and finishing. He also found the inner rotating bezel secure in use. The lume was his biggest surprise: he said it looked impressive, including in a dark-room photograph. That is a reviewer’s impression, not a controlled brightness or longevity measurement. As he put it, “Crucially, nothing about this affordable watch seems cheap.”
How good is the fully lumed dial?
The appeal is visual as well as practical: rather than limiting luminous material to hands and hour markers, the reviewed Eiger has a full-lume dial. Nudds had been skeptical that this treatment would work, but reported that it made a strong impression in the dark. The review does not provide standardized comparisons, timed glow readings, or a quantified account of how long the dial remained legible, so the evidence supports his positive experience—not a claim that it outperforms other watches.
#1 Best Overall
- Integrated Mini Compass: Adjustable black 18mm resin strap fits up to an 8-inch wrist; the compass is a decorative accent, not for navigation
- Serious Performance: A 100-hour chronograph tracks lap and split times, plus a 24-hour countdown timer and a month, day and date calendar for everyday training
- Everyday Alarms: Three daily, weekday, or weekend alarms with a 5-minute backup, 24-hour military time mode, and two time zones keep you on schedule
- Night-Ready Visibility: An acrylic lens and INDIGLO light-up dial keep the gray digital display easy to read from dawn to dusk and after dark
- Built to Last: A Timex watch is designed for durability and everyday reliability; every piece reflects our commitment to quality without compromise
The current Expedition II Eiger listing specifies a matte full-lume dial with Swiss Super-LumiNova BGW9. That is a detail for the current listed model and should not be treated as a lab result or retroactively assigned to the original watch without confirmation.
The strap was the main practical complaint
Nudds disliked the original watch’s EPDM rubber strap, describing it as a dust magnet and criticizing its design. “I love rubber straps but I did not love the one that came on this watch,” he wrote. He switched to a tan leather strap and recommended trying alternatives. He also noted that the buckle width made it harder to pair the buckle with tapered replacement straps.
Rank #2
- Adjustable 20mm black fabric strap with brown genuine leather accents fits up to 8-inch wrist circumference
- 100-hour chronograph with lap & split times; 24-hour countdown timer; month, day & date calendar
- 3 daily, weekday or weekend alarms with 5-minute backup; 24-hour military time mode; 2 time zones
- Brown 41mm resin case with black top ring & acrylic lens; green Day-Glo digital display; Indiglo light-up watch dial
- Water-resistant to 100m (330 ft): In general, suitable for snorkeling, as well as swimming, but not diving
The original review lists a 20 mm strap width. BOLDR’s Expedition canvas and EPDM replacement strap pages also specify 20 mm and identify Expedition compatibility: see the black Expedition canvas strap and orange EPDM strap. That makes 20 mm leather or canvas straps a sensible search starting point, not a guarantee that every aftermarket, fitted-end, tapered strap—or the original buckle—will work.

Quick Recap
Who should consider this watch?
- If the dial is the draw: The review offers a favorable firsthand impression of the original’s full-lume effect, while the current Expedition II listing identifies BGW9. Neither source supplies standardized lume testing.
- If wrist fit matters: The original review gives a 46 mm lug-to-lug measurement; the current Expedition II listing gives 48 mm. The latter is the more relevant figure when assessing that listed version.
- If you want a particular strap: The original reviewer disliked the included rubber strap, while the current listing specifies black canvas. Confirm generation and strap before buying, and check compatibility rather than assuming any 20 mm design will fit.
- If you are shopping now: The official listing showed $699 and “To be announced” on October 8, 2026. Confirm live price, inventory, seller, and exact generation; the available evidence does not verify Amazon stock or model identity.
