The name describes a design, not proof that a bracelet is an authentic vintage original. Before buying one for a vintage watch, check the lug width, whether the band will pass over your hand, how the clasp locks, and what evidence supports any claim of age or military use.
What makes a bracelet Bonklip-style?
The defining features are ladder-like metal links and a movable clasp: instead of removing conventional links, you reposition the clasp at a chosen point along the bracelet. JOSEPH BONNIE describes its modern bracelet as tool-free to adjust; SERICA says its clasp inserts between the links and adjusts in 1.8 mm increments. Retail terminology can be imprecise. One retailer groups “stretch (bonklip)” bands while cautioning that metal stretch bracelets are not all Bonklips. For clarity, look for the ladder-link construction and repositionable clasp; an expandable metal band alone does not establish that a bracelet is Bonklip-style. Watch Obsession.
What is known about the bracelet’s history?
SERICA says the Bonklip originated in England in the late 1920s and was associated with watches worn by Royal Air Force pilots. Forstner describes the style as originally made in the UK and US, and says its own design is shown in a patent filed in 1944. Forstner also says this style was one of the few metal bracelet options for fixed-bar watches. A bracelet’s resemblance to the style does not show that it was issued to a service member or fitted to a specific vintage watch. Treat claims such as “RAF-issued” as unverified unless the seller can provide relevant provenance tied to that piece.
How to check fit before buying
Measure the lug width
Measure the distance between the watch’s lugs; that determines the bracelet width to look for. Do not infer it from the case diameter. Modern examples listed by JOSEPH BONNIE offer 18, 19, and 20 mm widths; PLAY METAL describes its Bonklip-inspired bracelet in widths from 18 to 22 mm. Measure both wrist and hand
The bracelet must pass over the hand, so wrist circumference alone may not predict whether it will fit. The ranges below are maker-stated specifications for their own products; use the current chart for the exact version you plan to buy.

What to inspect in the clasp and bracelet
Clasp design varies, so “Bonklip” in a listing is not enough to establish how securely it stays in position. Forstner describes a push-button clasp that locks into the links, in contrast with non-locking clip designs; SERICA calls its clasp a “Safe-lock.” Ask for clear photographs or a demonstration of how the clasp engages, then check that it cannot move accidentally when secured. - Look closely at the links, clasp, and end fittings for bends, cracks, or separation.
- Confirm that the bracelet’s width and ends suit the watch’s lug arrangement.
- Ask how adjustment works and whether the clasp has a positive locking mechanism.
- Check the seller’s return terms in case the bracelet does not clear your hand or fit the watch as expected.
How to distinguish an original from a modern interpretation
“Bonklip-style” and “Bonklip-inspired” generally describe design resemblance, not vintage age. PLAY METAL explicitly describes its bracelet as inspired by the design, so it should be treated as a modern interpretation, not an original period bracelet. A modern reproduction may suit a vintage watch, but it should not be represented as vintage without supporting evidence. PLAY METAL.

For a claimed vintage or military example, request close-up images of any maker marks, the clasp, and the end fittings, along with seller documentation and provenance connected to the specific bracelet or watch. The available product information does not establish a definitive authentication test; style alone cannot verify age or service history.
