Their movements, date-setting arrangements and reported lug widths differ. Both are associated with 150 m Para Water markings and front-loading monobloc cases; neither a vintage dial marking nor an old specification proves that a particular watch is water-resistant today.
How do the Super Crystal Date and Super Jet Auto Dater differ?
The figures below come from enthusiast reviews and specific restoration or watch examples, not a current Citizen specification sheet for these discontinued references. Individual variants may differ, so use the reference and the actual watch as your guide.
| Feature | Citizen Super Crystal Date | Citizen Super Jet Auto Dater |
|---|---|---|
| Reported reference | 52801-Y; a restored example is marked AUDS-52801-Y | 51202-Y; a specialist example is marked SADS 51202-Y |
| Movement | Automatic caliber 5410, reported with 33 jewels | 39-jewel Jet-family automatic; caliber cited as 1150 by Fratello and 1160C for a specific Chronographes example |
| Reported dimensions | 37.5 mm diameter, 12 mm thick and 45 mm lug-to-lug, as reported for a Fratello-reviewed watch | Similar overall dimensions are reported in the review; a specific case measurement is not stated in the cited material |
| Reported lug width | 18 mm | 20 mm |
| Case and crystal | Stainless-steel monobloc case and thick flat mineral crystal, as reported | Front-loading monobloc case and thick mineral crystal, as described for the cited example |
| Water-resistance marking | Reported as 150 m | Para 150 m marking on the described example |
| Reported dial variants | Black dial; also a version without “Super” and with blue crosshairs | Black dial variants and a silver-dial version |
Fratello’s January 2021 review reports the Super Crystal Date’s caliber 5410 as hand-windable, hacking, and equipped with a quick-set date at the crown’s first stop. For the Super Jet, the review describes hand winding and a spring-return date corrector at a second crown position, but no hacking seconds. These operating details describe the reviewed watches; confirm how a particular example behaves rather than forcing a crown or corrector.
What do the movement numbers mean?
The Super Crystal Date’s reported caliber is 5410, with 33 jewels. For the Super Jet, the naming is less settled: Fratello calls its movement caliber 1150, while Chronographes labels the movement in its SADS 51202-Y example 1160C and describes a distinctive jeweled rotor arrangement. Citizen’s official historical record identifies caliber 1150 in the earlier Super Auto Dater, introduced in May 1963, and links it to the Jet rotor automatic. That supports a relationship, not a claim that every Super Jet variant carries an identical caliber suffix.

For an individual Citizen Super Jet 150m, treat the case reference, dial, serial and movement actually inside the watch as separate evidence. A clear movement photograph or inspection by a watchmaker is more useful than relying on a seller’s title alone. The Chronographes 1160C example is reported at 18,000 beats per hour with a stated 47-hour power reserve; those are figures for that cited example, not a guarantee for every 51202-Y.
Why does the monobloc case matter for service?
Unlike a conventional watch with a screw-back, the described monobloc Super Jet is accessed from the front. The specialist account explains that the bezel and crystal assembly must be removed to reach the movement. This is not a casual home-opening procedure: aged crystals, case surfaces and seals can be damaged, and the appropriate service approach depends on the exact case variant.

Parts availability is a practical ownership concern. Fratello’s review describes crystals and crowns as extremely difficult to source. A separate restoration of a 1967 AUDS-52801-Y documents an original replacement crystal numbered 54-51810, but that part number is evidence for that particular watch only; compatibility with another related case must be checked. The restoration also reports a detached winding weight, a chipped jewel in the winding train and a broken setting lever, with donor movement components used in the repair. It illustrates why movement repair and sourcing a correct case part can be different challenges.
Does a Citizen Super Crystal Date or Super Jet marked 150 m remain waterproof?
No historical marking establishes present-day water resistance for a surviving watch. The “150 m” or “Para 150 m” text is historically significant, but decades of aging, previous service or replacement parts can affect seals and case integrity. Do not swim or shower with an example unless it has passed a current pressure test appropriate to the watch. This is a precaution based on age and service dependence, not a claim that a particular specimen has failed a test.

What should you check before buying one?
- Match the reference and dial. Compare the case markings and dial configuration with the claimed model. Variant descriptions exist for both watches, so a dial alone is not enough to establish identity.
- Inspect the case and crystal. Request sharp photographs of the case, bezel, crystal and any wear or damage. Monobloc construction makes case condition and front-access service especially relevant.
- Confirm the movement and operation. Ask for a clear movement photograph and, where possible, a recent service report. For a Super Jet, note whether the seller identifies an 1150 or 1160C, and avoid treating either label as universal.
- Ask about service and parts. Establish what work was done, which parts were replaced and whether the watchmaker verified compatibility. A running watch is not necessarily recently serviced or pressure-tested.
- Check originality and fit. Ask about the dial, hands, crown and crystal, and measure the actual lugs before ordering a strap. The cited Super Crystal Date example uses 18 mm; the cited Super Jet example uses 20 mm.
Fratello’s January 2021 article gave an era-specific estimate of $600–$1,000 for a decent Super Crystal Date and said Super Jet pricing appeared similar, while noting wide variation. That is a dated anecdotal estimate, not current market pricing. Citizen Watch America’s general parts and services page describes service for a selection of timepieces; it does not confirm parts or service eligibility for these discontinued references.
