The Book of Rolex is best understood as an illustrated introduction to the brand, not a reference catalogue. Jens Høy and Christian Frost’s expanded edition ranges across Rolex history, collections, innovations, materials, vintage watches and nicknames, making it a promising starting point for general watch readers and enthusiasts who want the broad view. Its coverage has a time-sensitive limit: a November 2025 review says the edition it examined did not include the Land-Dweller or Dynapulse technology.
What kind of Rolex book is it?
The reviewed expanded edition is by Jens Høy and Christian Frost, ISBN 9781788843102. In its 2 November 2025 review, Monochrome Watches describes it as an approximately 200-page illustrated book that guides readers through around 120 years of Rolex history. Those page and history figures are the reviewer’s descriptions.
The book aims for breadth and accessibility rather than exhaustive model-by-model documentation. Robin Nooy of Monochrome Watches captures that distinction: “The Book of Rolex welcomes you to the entire Rolex universe without bombarding you with every single reference ever made.”
What does the book cover?
As described by Monochrome Watches, the book moves from the company’s beginnings as Wilsdorf & Davis through the brand’s collections, innovations, materials and vintage watches. It also takes in Rolex’s connections with public figures, its racing history and the nicknames attached to watches. The review highlights stories involving Paul Newman’s Daytona and James Cameron’s Deepsea Challenge prototype.
#1 Best Overall
This range makes the book a tour of the brand’s history and cultural footprint as well as its watches. It is not presented as a complete catalogue of references, so readers looking for exhaustive specifications or a definitive guide to every model should not treat it as one.
How accessible and useful is it?
Reviewer Robin Nooy calls the book straightforward and well-rounded, recommending it to Rolex aficionados as well as general watch enthusiasts. That is one reviewer’s assessment, rather than a consensus or an independently tested finding. The breadth described in the review makes it a reasonable starting point for readers exploring Rolex, and the reviewer also suggests it as a gift for a watch fan.

Is the edition current?
The 2 November 2025 review says the expanded edition it examined had not yet incorporated the Rolex Land-Dweller or its Dynapulse technology. That qualification applies to the edition reviewed at that time; it does not establish whether a later printing or edition has updated the material. Check the specific edition and its publication details if coverage of newer Rolex introductions matters to you.
