The Breguet Classique Hora Mundi ref. 5717 is a mechanical travel watch built around a specific trick: it stores two selected city time zones and switches the main time display between them at the push of a button. The date and day/night indication change with the selected city, so the watch presents a coordinated local-time display rather than two times at once. Its 44 mm precious-metal case and intricate map dial make it distinctive, but also give buyers practical questions about fit, legibility, condition and service history.
What makes the Hora Mundi 5717 unusual?
Breguet’s 5717 keeps two preselected local-time settings in memory. The central hands show one selected city’s time; the city name appears in a window at 6 o’clock, while the date and day/night display correspond to that city. Pressing the pusher switches to the other stored setting. It does not display both times simultaneously.
Swatch Group’s 23 March 2011 launch release described the function as an instant change between two preselected time zones without disturbing the watch’s operation. The company presented it as the first mechanical watch to combine an instant time-zone jump with memory synchronized to the date, day/night indication and city. That “first” is the manufacturer’s historical claim, not an independently established universal chronology. How does switching time zones work?
The operating concept is to set a first city and its local time, then select a second city to preset the alternate display. Once both are established, the pusher toggles the main hands between them. The selected city is identified at 6 o’clock, and the day/night indicator follows the displayed city’s time. The date can move forward or backward when a city change crosses a calendar boundary. In its release, Swatch Group used Paris and Sydney as an example: 4 p.m. in Paris corresponds to 1 a.m. the following day in Sydney, so switching to Sydney advances the date and changes the day/night display from sun to moon. This is the manufacturer’s explanatory example, not a test conducted for this review.
Setting and operating the watch
The manual covers automatic winding, manual winding, date correction, a stop-seconds time-setting position, city/time-zone selection and the pusher action for switching zones. Because control functions and handling depend on the particular watch and its instructions, consult the correct manual for the specific piece rather than relying on a generic setting sequence. The manual’s retrieved French section gives an approximate 55-hour running time after full winding; that figure should be verified against the applicable manual and language edition for an individual watch before being used as a buying specification. Dial design and legibility
The dial combines a world-map image with a date aperture at 12, a selected-city window at 6 and a circular day/night indicator around 3–4. The date is shown on a dragging disc: several consecutive dates pass through the broad aperture over the course of the day, with a small retrograde pointer and circle following the date currently indicated. This design gives the date a prominent presence, but it is more visually elaborate than a conventional date window. In its 2019 review of a version, Time+Tide described a gold dial, engraved map and lacquered sea, alongside the apertures and day/night display. How to assess it as a travel watch
The 5717’s appeal depends on whether its two-city toggle matches how you travel. It differs in kind from a watch that keeps a second time zone continuously visible or a world-time display showing many cities at once. When comparing it with another travel watch, weigh the following practical points rather than assuming that one complication is inherently better:
- Time display: the 5717 toggles the main hands between two stored cities; it does not show two hour displays together.
- Calendar coordination: the date and day/night indication follow the selected city, including a date change when the zones fall on different calendar days.
- Setting workflow: confirm that the city-selection and setting procedure suits your use, and review the official instructions for the particular watch.
- Fit and readability: consider the 44 mm diameter, 13.55 mm launch thickness, precious-metal case and information-rich dial on your wrist.
- Use conditions: account for the documented 3-bar/30 m water-resistance rating.
- Pre-owned confidence: assess service documentation, condition, completeness, authenticity documentation and the reputation of the seller for the specific example.
The cited descriptions establish the mechanism and dimensions, not comparative wearer testing. They do not demonstrate that the 5717 is easier or objectively superior to another travel watch.

For an individual listing, identify the exact metal and dial reference, inspect condition and service records, check what is included, and arrange independent authentication when appropriate. Treat the catalogue details for one auction lot as evidence about that lot, not as a template for every 5717.
