Choose the Breguet Marine 5517 if you want a simpler three-hand watch in a smaller, thinner case; choose the Marine Chronographe 5527 if you will use its flyback chronograph and prefer its more information-rich dial. Breguet lists the 5517 at 40 mm wide and 11.5 mm thick, with a 55-hour power reserve. The 5527 measures 42.3 mm by 13.9 mm and has a 48-hour reserve. Both are listed with 10-bar water resistance.
How the 5517 and 5527 differ
The main choice is not between two versions of the same display. The 5517 is an automatic three-hand watch with a date at 3 o’clock. The 5527 is an automatic flyback chronograph with a date between 4 and 5 o’clock, a central chronograph hand and three counters for timed minutes, hours and small seconds. The added timing function brings a larger, thicker case and a more involved dial.

The 5517 suits a buyer who wants the date and ordinary time display without chronograph counters. Its 40 mm diameter is 2.3 mm less than the 5527’s, and it is 2.4 mm thinner. It also has a 22 mm lug width, compared with 24.5 mm on the chronograph. Those figures establish the size difference on paper, not how either watch will sit on an individual wrist.

Breguet describes the 5517’s seconds-hand counterweight as shaped like a maritime flag, with a wave motif around the crown and a rotor visible through the sapphire caseback that recalls a ship’s wheel. These are the manufacturer’s design descriptions, rather than independent assessments.
Choose the 5527 if you will use the flyback chronograph
The 5527 is the more functional choice for someone who regularly times events. It has a central chronograph hand and separate counters for timed minutes, hours and small seconds. Breguet also says its hands and markers are luminescent. The date sits between 4 and 5 o’clock rather than at 3.

That extra function comes with a larger, thicker case and a shorter listed power reserve: 48 hours, versus 55 hours for the 5517. If you do not expect to use a chronograph, the additional counters may add visual complexity without adding practical value for your routine.
What to consider before deciding
Case fit
The published dimensions favor the 5517 for someone seeking the smaller and thinner of these two watches. They cannot tell you how the case will feel or look on your wrist. Try both on if fit is decisive, and consider the lug width alongside diameter and thickness.

Verdict: 5517 for restraint, 5527 for timing
For a daily watch where a chronograph is not a requirement, the 5517 offers the more restrained display, smaller dimensions and longer stated power reserve. Pick the 5527 if its flyback chronograph is a function you will genuinely use and you are comfortable with its larger, thicker case and busier dial.
