The original was ordered in 1783 as a gift for the queen and completed in 1827, long after her death. Breguet presented No. 1160 in 2008, drawing on archival material to recreate the original’s remarkable complications. “Replica” is common shorthand, but “reconstruction” makes the distinction between the two physical watches clear.
What is the difference between Breguet No. 160 and No. 1160?
They are two different watches with different histories. No. 160 is the original late-18th-century commission; No. 1160 is Breguet’s 21st-century reconstruction, made from historical evidence. The manufacturer calls No. 1160 a re-edition and has described it as an exact replica. The most precise everyday description is a functioning reconstruction: it acknowledges the relationship without implying that No. 1160 is the historic object.
| Question | No. 160 | No. 1160 |
|---|---|---|
| What is it? | The original pocket watch commissioned as a gift for Marie-Antoinette. Breguet’s retrospective identifies the commission. | A modern reconstruction of No. 160, presented by Breguet in 2008. Swatch Group’s 10 April 2008 release documents the presentation. |
| When was it made? | Commissioned in 1783 and completed in 1827, according to Breguet and Swatch Group. | Presented in 2008, following archival research and reconstruction by Breguet. |
| What supports its connection to the original? | The historic object and its records. | Breguet says it used original technical drawings and archival research, alongside comparisons with contemporary watches. An independent side-by-side engineering audit is not established in the cited accounts. |
| Can its current public access be confirmed? | The cited histories recount its theft and recovery, but do not establish present access. | No current display location or public viewing access is established by the cited sources. |
Who commissioned the original, and what happened to it?
According to Breguet’s account, an unnamed officer of Marie-Antoinette’s Guards ordered No. 160 in 1783 as a gift for the queen. It was not a commission placed directly by the queen. Abraham-Louis Breguet completed the watch in 1827, 34 years after Marie-Antoinette’s death and four years after his own.
The original was stolen from a museum in Jerusalem in 1983 and recovered in 2007, according to Breguet’s historical account. The striking timeline helps explain why the later reconstruction matters: No. 1160 was a new watch made to bring the design and complicated mechanism back to life, not the recovered No. 160 under another number.

How Breguet reconstructed No. 1160
Breguet says its watchmakers worked from original technical drawings held in the Breguet Museum archives and material at the Musée des Arts et Métiers in Paris. The company also compared the evidence with contemporary watches, including the Duc de Praslin watch. Breguet presents No. 1160 as faithful to its ancestor and says the work recovered partly lost watchmaking skills; that fidelity claim is the maker’s, rather than the result of an independently documented engineering audit.
Breguet’s retrospective states: “It took the Breguet watchmakers three years of intensive work to recreate the N°160 watch identically.” The historical account describes the project as a four-year research and reconstruction effort leading to its April 2008 presentation. Swatch Group’s 10 April 2008 release says Nicolas G. Hayek set the challenge in 2005, while Breguet’s account dates the challenge to 2004; the exact start year is therefore best left unspecified.

What complications does the Breguet 1160 have?
Breguet describes No. 1160 as a self-winding “perpétuelle.” Its 823-component movement brings together timekeeping, striking, calendar, astronomical, reserve and temperature indications:
- Minute repeater: sounds the hours, quarters and minutes on demand.
- Perpetual calendar: displays the date, day and month.
- Equation of time: indicates the difference between civil time and solar time.
- Time displays: jumping hours and minutes, an independent central seconds hand, and small seconds.
- Power reserve: a 48-hour indicator, as stated by Breguet.
- Temperature: a bimetallic thermometer.
The movement’s construction is as elaborate as the display. Breguet lists pink-gold parts, blued and polished steel screws, sapphire-set friction points and bearings, a natural-lift escapement, a gold cylindrical balance spring, a bimetallic balance and a double pare-chute shock-protection arrangement. These are manufacturer-described features, not performance results from an independent test.

How large is No. 1160, and what does it look like?
Swatch Group gives the case diameter as 63 mm in its 2008 release. It describes a special gold alloy with a more coppery hue intended to match the period appearance, and rock crystal for the dial and case glasses. Arthur Touchot also reported a 63 mm width in his 2017 Hodinkee hands-on account.
Touchot describes the watch as heavy, but this is his impression from handling it, not a published measured mass. He also found the transparent dial visually revealing: it exposes the movement while keeping the many indications in view. He notes that an alternate grand feu enamel dial was supplied, though it was rarely used. The sources do not provide a side-by-side usability assessment of the two dial presentations.

What does the published hands-on account establish?
Touchot’s article, published on 21 April 2017, records a short loan of No. 1160 to Breguet’s London flagship boutique, where he handled it. He wrote that it was “heavy” and reported its 63 mm width. He also said Breguet rarely brought the watch out at that time. Those details describe one author’s encounter in 2017; they do not establish where No. 1160 is now, whether it is on display, or whether visitors can currently see it.
The distinction matters for anyone searching for a “Breguet 1160 Marie Antoinette pocket watch hands-on.” There is a published, attributed encounter, but the available account is historical rather than a current viewing guide or a fresh test. It supplies tactile impressions, not a measured weight, long-term wear assessment, accuracy result or present-day access information.
