Which is older, Breguet or Vacheron Constantin?
By the founding dates each Maison gives, Vacheron Constantin is older. Its official timeline dates its origin to 1755; Breguet’s official history dates Abraham-Louis Breguet’s Paris workshop to 1775. The difference is 20 years.

Vacheron Constantin identifies the 1755 signing of an apprentice to Jean-Marc Vacheron’s Geneva workshop as the Maison’s beginning, calling the contract its “birth certificate.” Breguet’s date marks the opening of its founder’s Paris workshop. Neither date is the founder’s birth date.

That supports the workshop’s historical context, while the claim of uninterrupted watchmaking history belongs to Vacheron Constantin itself.

Why is Breguet associated with invention?
Breguet’s reputation in this comparison comes from specific watchmaking work attributed to Abraham-Louis Breguet, rather than from being the older Maison. One example is the Perpétuelle, his term for self-winding watches. Breguet’s official historical account says the first was sold to the Duc d’Orléans in 1780 and describes Breguet as developing a reliable self-winding watch.
That is a meaningful innovation story, but it should not be inflated into a claim that Abraham-Louis Breguet invented every form of automatic-watch mechanism. The documented example here is the Perpétuelle and its early sale, as recounted by the Maison.

Breguet also describes maintaining historical records of timepieces, commissions, sales and owners. Such archives can illuminate the Maison’s history; they do not, by themselves, authenticate the provenance of a particular watch.

How did the Vacheron Constantin name emerge?
The 1755 origin story begins with Jean-Marc Vacheron’s Geneva workshop. The full name came later: Vacheron Constantin’s official timeline dates the partnership between the founder’s grandson, Jacques Barthélémi Vacheron, and François Constantin to 1819. The partnership is the milestone associated with the name used today.

Vacheron Constantin says it holds the title of the oldest watch manufacturer with an uninterrupted watchmaking history. That is the Maison’s own heritage claim, not an independently adjudicated finding established by the museum record. The museum provides corroborating context for the 1755 workshop, not proof of every aspect of corporate continuity.
