Breitling SA agreed to acquire Universal Genève in a deal announced on 12 December 2023. The transaction covered the entire share capital of Universal Geneve SA and a related sale loan, with total consideration of CHF 60 million, subject to adjustment. The filings explain what changed hands—but do not establish a new product lineup or current availability.
Who bought Universal Genève, and when?
Breitling SA was the purchaser, and City Chain (Bermuda) Holdings Limited was the seller. Their share sale agreement was dated 12 December 2023. Universal Genève’s official history describes the acquisition more broadly as taking place in 2023; that retrospective wording does not replace the agreement date.
The agreement covered all issued shares of Universal Geneve SA, along with a related sale loan. The Hong Kong Stock Exchange announcement identifies the parties and transaction terms: City Chain’s 12 December 2023 announcement.
How much did Breitling pay?
The transaction announcement stated total consideration of CHF 60 million, subject to contractual adjustment. A later shareholder circular set out staged payment terms: CHF 20 million was payable before or at completion, with the balance payable afterward under the agreement. The amount is the stated transaction consideration, not an independently established market valuation of Universal Genève as a brand. See the 2024 shareholder circular for the payment details.

What did the acquired company do?
The filing described Universal Geneve SA’s activities as watch supply-chain management and distribution, trademark licensing, international warranty, and after-sales service. It also said the company was intended to hold the Universal Genève trademarks and related domains and accounts after completion. This describes the legal entity and brand assets in the deal; it does not establish the scale of a manufacturing operation.
City Chain reported target-company revenue of CHF 14,000 for the year ended 31 March 2022 and CHF 23,000 for the year ended 31 March 2023, attributing that revenue to after-sales services. Those figures concern the legal target company as reported in the filing—not total sales of Universal Genève watches or the value of the brand.

Why did the deal attract attention?
Universal Genève’s history reaches back to 1894, when Numa-Émile Descombes and Ulysse-Georges Perret founded the company. The brand’s official timeline highlights the Compax chronograph, introduced in 1936, and the Polerouter, developed by Gerald Genta and presented in 1954. That heritage helps explain collector interest in the acquisition, but it does not establish what products or strategy will follow. The dates and models appear in Universal Genève’s official heritage timeline.
Alfred Gantner, Partners Group co-founder, described the brand’s appeal this way: “Universal Genève is renowned for its manufacture movements and mythical models. Watch enthusiasts have long dreamed of its return for good.” The quote appears in the brand’s official history.

What happens to Universal Genève watches now?
The transaction documents and historical timeline do not establish current models, prices, launch dates, or retail availability. Buyers interested in a new Universal Genève watch should verify any such details through the brand’s current official channels rather than infer them from the acquisition announcement.
For vintage-watch collectors, the Compax and Polerouter are useful names to know because the brand itself emphasizes them in its history. A particular vintage watch’s condition, provenance, service records, and originality matter when evaluating an individual example; the acquisition announcement does not verify listings or the quality of any seller.
