What makes a modern reissue faithful?
Weppelink’s standard is a remake with a modern movement and contemporary production standards that still respects the original watch’s size and design. By that test, a new caliber is not enough: case proportions, dial details, and bracelet design help determine whether a watch retains the character of its predecessor. A changed size or added complication can make a watch less faithful to collectors who prioritize a close reproduction.
The five selections take different approaches, from a near-preserved case shape with a practical date update to a chronograph whose modern mechanics add a new timing display.

1. Vacheron Constantin Historiques 222
The Historiques 222 revives the integrated-bracelet design Vacheron Constantin introduced in 1977. The gold model keeps the 37 mm “Jumbo” case size of the original, although it is 7.95 mm thick compared with the vintage watch’s 7.2 mm. Its caliber 2455/2 adds a quick-set date, a convenience the original did not have. That makes the 222 a strong fit for someone who wants the recognizable proportions and bracelet design without insisting on a function-for-function reproduction.

Weppelink’s January 2025 article also describes a stainless-steel version. It cites prices of €81,500 for the gold watch and €35,300 for steel at that time; those are historical figures, not verified current prices or offers.
2. Omega Speedmaster Calibre 321 “Ed White”
The modern steel “Ed White” is based on astronaut Gene Cernan’s Speedmaster reference 105.003. Omega introduced it in the first week of 2020, after a platinum version. Its 39.7 mm case measures 47.8 mm from lug to lug and 13 mm thick, giving a useful sense of its wrist footprint beyond the diameter alone.

The watch pairs the Calibre 321 with a ceramic bezel insert and sapphire crystal. Fratello describes Omega’s dedicated production facility in Biel and says each watch and movement are assembled twice and adjusted by one watchmaker. The article quotes €17,100 in its January 2025 context; it does not establish the current price or availability.
3. Grand Seiko SLGW004 and SLGW005
These two watches bring back the case style of the 45GS, with proportions close to the historical design: 38.8 mm in diameter, 10.4 mm thick, and 43.7 mm lug to lug. The SLGW004 is an 18K yellow-gold limited edition of 200 pieces; the steel SLGW005 was limited to 1,200 pieces.

Both use Grand Seiko’s hand-wound Hi-Beat 9SA4. Fratello describes it as running at 36,000 vibrations per hour, with twin barrels, a double-impulse escapement, and an 80-hour power reserve. The models became available in November 2024, but the article does not establish whether either is currently available.
4. Zenith Chronomaster Original
The Chronomaster Original reworks the 1969 El Primero A386 while retaining its 38 mm bezel-less case, faceted lugs, pump-style pushers, white dial, and tricolor subdials. The main visible departure at the bracelet is a modern three-row design in place of the original’s Gay Frères ladder bracelet.

Inside is the automatic, high-beat El Primero 3600, a column-wheel chronograph with a 60-hour power reserve. Its central chronograph hand completes one rotation every 10 seconds, so the display can time to 1/10 of a second. That is a functional update, not just a faithful return to the A386’s outward design.

The Polo 79 revisits the original Polo’s late-1970s full-gold look. Its round case is 38 mm across and 7.45 mm thick; horizontal engraved lines known as “gadroons” run across the case and integrated 18K yellow-gold bracelet. Fratello reports a weight of almost 200 grams, making it the most substantial wearing proposition in this group by the stated weight figure.

The modern watch uses the mechanical micro-rotor caliber 1200P1, which is 2.25 mm thick and has a 44-hour power reserve. This is a change from the historical Polo’s quartz movement, so the return is chiefly about the full-gold design rather than reproducing the original mechanics. The article cites €81,500 in January 2025; that is not a current verified price.
How the five reissues differ
The list is not a contest in which one watch is objectively the most faithful. Each preserves a different part of its predecessor and modernizes another.
- Closest to the original’s case size: The 222 keeps the 37 mm “Jumbo” size, while the Chronomaster Original retains the A386’s 38 mm case.
- Chronograph focus: The Omega centers on the Calibre 321 and the 105.003 lineage; the Zenith adds a central hand that makes 1/10-second timing visible.
- Movement-led update: Grand Seiko builds the 45GS-style watches around a new hand-wound Hi-Beat caliber, while Piaget replaces the original Polo’s quartz mechanics with a thin mechanical micro-rotor.
- Precious-metal presence: The Polo 79 is a full-gold design with a reported weight of almost 200 grams. The 222 is offered in gold and, as described in the article, steel; the Grand Seiko gold edition is limited to 200 pieces.
For anyone exploring beyond the five, Weppelink also mentions the Breitling Navitimer Ref. 806 1959 Re-Edition, Daniel Roth Tourbillon models, Audemars Piguet [RE]Master02, Cartier Tortue Monopoussoir, Aquastar Deepstar, Heuer Carrera reissues, and Seiko Prospex divers.
