The Breitling Chronomat is the brand’s all-purpose sports-watch line, with roots in aviation timing and recognizable rider tabs and Rouleaux bracelet. The Superocean is Breitling’s dive-watch family, which the brand dates to 1957. Choose the Chronomat for a versatile sports watch that works across everyday and dressier settings, and the Superocean when water use or a higher water-resistance rating matters. Within each family, though, sizes, movements and ratings differ by reference, so the choice should be made on the specific model rather than the collection name.
What each collection is built for
Breitling presents the Chronomat as an all-purpose sports watch. The line was launched publicly in 1984, and Breitling ties its origin to a timing-watch commission associated with the Frecce Tricolori aerobatic team. That aviation link explains much of the family’s identity: a timing-oriented sports watch with a clear, instrument-like character rather than a purpose-built tool for diving. The collection’s signatures, as described on Breitling’s official Chronomat collection page, are the rider tabs on the case, an onion-shaped crown and the Rouleaux bracelet.
The Superocean is the opposite emphasis. Breitling dates the collection to 1957 and describes it as a dive-watch family intended for underwater exploration and everyday wear. Its design language centres on dive-oriented bezels, and the collection spans a wider range of sizes and dial and strap configurations than the Chronomat’s own page emphasizes.
Side-by-side comparison
The table compares what each official collection page establishes at family level. Where a value depends on the individual reference, the cell says so, and it should be confirmed on that reference’s own page before you rely on it.

Chronomat: model families and what sets them apart
Breitling’s Chronomat collection page groups the line into four families. Each one is a different size and movement pairing, so it helps to know which family you are looking at before comparing details.
Chronomat 32
The smallest family on the collection page. It suits readers with smaller wrists who want the Chronomat’s rider-tab look and bracelet at a more compact diameter.

- Cambered sapphire, glareproofed both sides
- Signature 'Rouleaux” bracelet
- Power reserve approx. 70 hrs
- Watch movement type: Breitling 01 (Manufacture) automatic-self-wind
- Band color: silver and gold
Chronomat Automatic 36
The 36 mm family is the entry point for the automatic Chronomat. It is also the size that appears in the 2026 update described below, so it is the easiest reference to check against the most recent launch details.
Chronomat B31 Automatic 40
The 40 mm B31 family is the mid-size option. The model name signals a different movement line from the 36 mm models, so confirm the calibre and power reserve on the reference page rather than assuming they match.

Super Chronomat B01 44
The 44 mm family is the largest Chronomat size on the collection page. Its B01 name denotes a different movement line from the B31 models, and it is the best fit among Chronomats for larger wrists.
The 2026 Chronomat update
On May 19, 2026, T3 reported a Chronomat update covering three-hand Automatic 36 and Automatic B31 40 models and a Chronomat B01 42 chronograph. According to that report, the update adds a fully integrated bracelet, a micro-adjustment clasp and a slimmer chronograph case. T3 quoted Breitling Head of Design Pablo Widmer: “This update isn’t about reinventing the Chronomat, but about enhancing its simplicity.” These are reported launch details rather than specifications taken from Breitling’s own reference pages, so verify the exact reference, case dimensions and clasp on Breitling’s site before you compare it with an older Chronomat.

The update is also the main reason the Chronomat’s size grouping now differs from its collection page. The 42 mm model reported by T3 is not among the four families listed on the Chronomat collection page, so treat it as a recent addition that may not yet be reflected in every listing.

The Superocean collection page lists four case sizes: 36 mm, 42 mm, 44 mm and 46 mm. For a dive-oriented watch, the size and rating together determine suitability more than the name does, and the collection page does not assign a single rating to every model.

- Breitling Avenger Chronograph Automatic Blue Dial Men's Watch A13317101C1X1
Breitling describes water resistance as model-dependent, from 300 m up to 1,000 m across the collection. The 1,000 m figure is therefore the top of the range, not the rating of a typical Superocean. Check the stated rating on the specific reference before using it for swimming, snorkelling or diving.
Choosing by use
Use the following checks to narrow the choice. Each one points to a collection, and then the reference page settles the details.
Quick Recap
- Mostly everyday wear, with occasional water exposure: The Chronomat fits this pattern. Its 200 m rating, as stated on the collection page, is adequate for splashes and light water contact, but it is not a dive-watch rating.
- Regular swimming, snorkelling or diving: Start with the Superocean and filter to references whose stated water resistance matches the activity.
- Smaller wrists: Both collections offer 36 mm options. The Chronomat 32 is the smaller Chronomat choice.
- Larger wrists: The Superocean 44 mm and 46 mm sizes and the Super Chronomat B01 44 are the largest options listed on the two collection pages.
- Preference for a fully integrated bracelet: The 2026 Chronomat update reports this feature, so check whether your target reference is one of the updated models.
How to confirm a specific reference
- Open the official Breitling collection page for the line you are considering: the Chronomat collection page or the Superocean collection page.
- Select the exact reference you are comparing, not just the collection name.
- On the reference page, check the case diameter, stated water resistance, movement and bracelet or strap. Use these values rather than the collection-level figures in the table above.
- If the model is one of those reported in the 2026 Chronomat update, compare it with T3’s May 19, 2026 report at T3’s Chronomat update article and confirm the details on Breitling’s site.
- Confirm current availability with an authorized Breitling retailer, since reference listings change over time.
