It is a travel-ready automatic GMT watch with a 200m water-resistance rating and three distinct designs: a blue-and-red steel model, a rose-gold-tone version, and a gunmetal-gray model with a fully lumed dial. “Devil Flyer” is an affectionate nickname coined by launch writer Daan de Groot; it plays on the Oceanographer’s older “Devil Diver” nickname, tied to that watch’s 666-foot marking. Fratello and Hodinkee covered the September 2023 launch.
What is the Bulova Oceanographer GMT?
It is a modern Oceanographer with a traveler-style GMT movement: the Miyota 9075. When you change time zones, you can move the local hour hand independently while leaving the minute hand and 24-hour reference time undisturbed. That makes it a practical distinction from GMT watches whose independently adjustable hand is the 24-hour hand rather than the local hour hand.
The GMT function sits alongside the Oceanographer’s diver-style design and reported 200m (20ATM) water resistance. The “Devil Flyer” name is not a separate Bulova model name established by the launch coverage; it is the nickname used by Fratello author Daan de Groot. The historical “Devil Diver” nickname refers to the earlier Oceanographer’s 666-foot marking.
What the three versions have in common
Launch coverage reports the same basic dimensions and movement for all three references. These are launch-era specifications reported in 2023, not a confirmation of current catalog status.

| Specification | Reported launch detail |
|---|---|
| Case diameter | 41mm |
| Lug-to-lug | 45.2mm |
| Thickness | 14.6mm |
| Lug spacing | 20mm |
| Crystal | Double-domed sapphire with anti-reflective coating, as reported by Fratello |

| Movement functions and figures | Automatic winding, hand winding, hacking, 28,800 vibrations per hour, and a 42-hour power reserve, as reported in 2023 launch coverage |
The 9075’s local-hour adjustment is the defining travel feature. Hodinkee reported Miyota’s stated accuracy range as −10 to +30 seconds per day. Its author also measured one example at an average of +12 seconds per day across six positions; that is a result for one watch, not a product-wide guarantee.
How the three references differ
The movement is common to all three. Choose between them based on bezel layout, dial visibility, case finish, and bracelet or strap preference.

| Reference | Appearance | GMT and bezel layout | Wearing setup | Reported U.S. launch price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 96B405 | Stainless-steel case with blue dial and red-and-blue “Pepsi” styling | Bidirectional bezel with 24-hour scale | Steel bracelet | US$1,350, reported by Fratello on September 26, 2023 |
| 97B215 | Rose-gold-tone case and black dial | Bidirectional black-and-brown bezel with 24-hour scale | Rose-gold-tone steel bracelet | US$1,395, reported by Fratello on September 26, 2023 |
| 98B407 | Gunmetal-gray case with fully lumed white dial | Unidirectional dive bezel; 24-hour markings are on the dial | Gray rubber strap | US$1,295, reported by Fratello on September 26, 2023 |
The two bracelet models place the second-time-zone scale on a bidirectional 24-hour bezel. The gray 98B407 takes a different approach: it retains a unidirectional dive bezel and puts the 24-hour markings on the dial. That distinction, rather than the movement, is the main functional choice between the references.
How to choose a version
- Choose the 96B405 if you want the classic blue-and-red GMT look, a steel bracelet, and a 24-hour bezel.
- Choose the 97B215 if you prefer a warmer rose-gold-tone finish and black-and-brown bezel styling on a matching bracelet.
- Choose the 98B407 if the fully lumed dial and rubber strap appeal to you, and you prefer a dive bezel with the GMT scale printed on the dial.
For fit, consider the full case profile rather than diameter alone: the launch coverage reports a 41mm diameter, 45.2mm lug-to-lug, and 14.6mm thickness. Wrist shape and personal comfort matter, so those measurements are useful comparison points, not a guarantee of how the watch will wear.
