Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFor a new Rolex with a Rolex-issued guarantee, an Official Rolex Jeweler is the clearest route. Rolex says new watches bought through this channel come with a five-year international guarantee. Auctions can offer access to specific rare or discontinued watches, but the hammer price is not the total cost, and neither Rolex’s guarantee nor a particular remedy should be assumed. Compare the exact watch, all charges, and the terms that apply to the sale before deciding.
How the two buying routes differ
“Authorized dealer” here means an Official Rolex Jeweler. Rolex also has a separate Certified Pre-Owned program through participating Official Retailers; that is a defined route for qualifying pre-owned watches, not the same as buying a new watch.

| What is offered | A new watch from an Official Rolex Jeweler, or a qualifying pre-owned watch under the Rolex Certified Pre-Owned program at a participating Official Retailer. | A particular consigned lot described in that auction’s catalogue and governed by that sale’s conditions. |
| Rolex guarantee | Five years for a new watch bought from an Official Rolex Jeweler; two years for a Rolex Certified Pre-Owned watch. | Do not assume a Rolex guarantee applies. Check the lot terms and identify any auction-house remedy and its claim deadline. |
| Price basis | Check the applicable local offer for the exact watch; there is no universal price or availability rule established here. | Hammer price plus the applicable buyer’s premium, any overhead premium, taxes, and other sale-specific charges. |
| Selection | New models and Certified Pre-Owned selection depend on the market and participating retailer. | May include rare or discontinued pieces, but each lot is distinct. |
| Authentication and condition | Rolex says Official Retailers warrant authenticity; Certified Pre-Owned watches undergo Rolex workshop verification. | Review the description, condition information, documents, and sale conditions. Rolex says only Rolex can confirm a watch’s authenticity. |
Compare the total price, not the auction headline
The hammer price is the amount at which bidding ends; it is not necessarily the amount the buyer pays. A buyer’s premium is added to the hammer price and forms part of the auction purchase cost. Depending on the sale, there may also be an overhead premium, taxes, or other charges. Sotheby’s buyer guide explains that charges and terms depend on the sale: Guide for Buyers | Global.
For a concrete—but strictly dated and location-specific—example, Phillips’s April 2025 Geneva watches guide lists buyer’s-premium tiers of 27% on the first CHF 1,000,000 of the hammer price, 21% on the portion above CHF 1,000,000 through CHF 6,000,000, and 14.5% on the portion above CHF 6,000,000. Those figures describe that guide’s Geneva schedule; they are not a universal auction rate or a current schedule for every sale. Build the amount you would actually owe
- Start with your maximum hammer bid.
- Use the auction’s current buyer guide to calculate the buyer’s premium, including any tiered rates.
- Add an overhead premium if the sale charges one.
- Check which taxes and other fees apply to your purchase and delivery location.
- Read the conditions of sale for payment, collection or shipping, and any other charges that affect the final amount.
Do not treat a low hammer result as proof that auction is cheaper than an authorized-channel purchase. The available evidence does not establish a general auction discount or a current, matched price comparison. For a fair comparison, use the same reference and a closely comparable watch, and compare auction all-in cost with the applicable offer in the same market and period.
Check that you are comparing the same watch
Reference number alone is not enough to establish equivalence. Condition, originality, completeness, and service history can change what a particular watch represents and what it is worth to you. Before comparing a dealer offer with an auction estimate or result, assess the specific examples side by side.
- Reference and configuration: Confirm the exact reference and whether the watch retains its original configuration.
- Condition: Read the lot’s condition description and examine available images or inspection options; do not substitute an estimate or headline description for condition details.
- Completeness: Note whether the box, papers, and other documentation are included, and verify what the catalogue actually says.
- Service history: Check whether service records are disclosed and what they establish about the watch.
- Market and timing: Compare offers and auction costs in the same location and time period, accounting for fees and taxes.

New watches from an Official Rolex Jeweler
Rolex says new and genuine watches are sold exclusively by Official Rolex Jewelers, which warrant authenticity and provide a five-year international guarantee. See Rolex’s purchasing information for the channel and guarantee details.

Rolex Certified Pre-Owned watches
Rolex says Certified Pre-Owned watches are at least two years old, are checked in Rolex workshops to verify their original configuration, and carry a two-year international guarantee. They are available through participating Official Retailers. Details are on Rolex’s Certified Pre-Owned page and its certification process page.
Auction-house terms are a separate protection
Rolex states: “Only Rolex can confirm the authenticity of a Rolex watch.” An auction-house authenticity guarantee, where offered, is a contractual protection defined by that house’s conditions; it is not the same as a Rolex-issued guarantee. Sotheby’s says its auctions are governed by its buyer conditions, including its Authenticity Guarantee, subject to those terms. The terms may differ between houses and sales, so establish what the specific lot’s protection covers, what exclusions or deadlines apply, and what evidence is required to make a claim before bidding. See Rolex’s certification explanation and Sotheby’s buyer guide.
Quick Recap
When each route makes sense
Choose an Official Rolex channel when
- You want a new watch with the five-year Rolex international guarantee.
- You are considering a qualifying pre-owned watch and want the Rolex Certified Pre-Owned program’s workshop verification and two-year guarantee.
- You prefer a direct, clearly defined Rolex channel over interpreting a lot-specific auction contract.
Consider an auction when
- A particular rare or discontinued watch is the reason you are shopping. Sotheby’s describes auction as a way to access such pieces, but that is not evidence that they will cost less or carry safer protections: Sotheby’s auction tips for Rolex buyers.
- You can evaluate the exact lot’s condition, originality, documentation, and sale terms.
- You have calculated the all-in cost and understand which guarantee or contractual remedy, if any, applies.
Pre-bid checklist
- Have I matched the exact reference and a comparable condition—not just the brand or model name?
- Have I checked originality, completeness, disclosed service history, and the lot description?
- Have I calculated hammer price plus premium, any overhead charge, taxes, and other sale-specific fees?
- Have I identified whether the watch has a Rolex guarantee, an auction-house contractual protection, both, or neither?
- Have I read the applicable conditions for exclusions, claim deadlines, and required evidence?
