Four of the five watches in Monochrome Watches’ December 2017 buying guide were 2017 releases. Its fifth pick, the Vacheron Constantin Overseas Dual-Time, was identified in the article as part of the SIHH 2018 collection. The list is still a useful snapshot of how luxury-sports watches were interpreted at the time, but it is not strictly a list of five 2017 launches.
Here are the guide’s five selections, their reported launch-era specifications and prices, and the distinction that matters when reading its title. The prices below are historical CHF or EUR figures, not current retail or resale valuations.
What counts as a luxury-sports watch?
Monochrome’s 2017 guide used an editorial definition rather than a formal industry standard: a sports-capable watch combining high-end finishing with design cues associated with the 1970s integrated-bracelet style. Its traditional checklist included a stainless-steel case, an integrated bracelet and water resistance, alongside a thin, decorated movement and traditional dial craftsmanship. The watches it selected show that the category was already broader than that checklist: the group includes ceramic and precious-metal cases, and the Patek Philippe Aquanaut is fitted with a rubber strap rather than an integrated metal bracelet.
The guide’s prices and specifications describe its 2017–2018 context. They do not establish present-day availability, current retail pricing or pre-owned value.

The guide calls this the first Royal Oak made entirely from ceramic, bracelet included. Its 41 mm case measures 9.5 mm thick, and the automatic AP5134 calibre drives a perpetual calendar with a week indication. The guide listed boutique-exclusive availability and a CHF 85,000 price at the time; those are historical details, not confirmation of current availability or pricing.

Bulgari Octo Finissimo Automatic
The Octo Finissimo pairs a 40 mm titanium case with a 5.15 mm overall thickness, a titanium bracelet and dial, and the automatic in-house BLV138 calibre. The guide gives a 60-hour power reserve and hours, minutes and small seconds. It highlights the movement’s 2.23 mm thickness and described it as the thinnest automatic movement at that time. That is a time-bound claim from the 2017 guide, not a statement about the current record.
Girard-Perregaux Laureato Skeleton
The guide places the Laureato revival at SIHH 2017 and says the skeleton model followed later that year. Its steel version is listed with a 42 mm case, 10.88 mm thickness, an integrated steel bracelet and the automatic GP01800-0006 calibre, with a 54-hour reserve. The guide also notes a pink-gold version; the CHF 32,400 figure in its comparison is for the steel version.

Patek Philippe Aquanaut Jumbo Ref. 5168G
The 5168G is the selection that most clearly departs from the integrated-metal-bracelet formula: it combines an 18K white-gold case with a rubber strap. Monochrome lists the case as 42.2 mm across and 8.25 mm thick, with a blue gradient dial, automatic 324 SC calibre, date and 40-hour reserve.
Patek Philippe’s 2017 Baselworld release describes the 5168G as an 18K white-gold Aquanaut introduced for the collection’s 20th anniversary, at a new 42 mm Jumbo size. That official rounded diameter and Monochrome’s 42.2 mm figure are not identical; they are reported by their respective sources rather than silently treated as the same measurement.

The 2018 selection: Vacheron Constantin Overseas Dual-Time
The Overseas Dual-Time belongs in a discussion of the guide, but not in a strict list of watches launched in 2017: Monochrome explicitly identifies it as part of the SIHH 2018 collection. Its steel case is listed at 41 mm by 12.8 mm, with an automatic in-house 5110 DT calibre and 60-hour reserve. The package described in the guide includes a steel bracelet and extra leather and rubber straps. Its EUR 25,600 figure is the guide’s historical price.
Do not confuse the Aquanaut 5168G with the 5650
Patek Philippe’s same 2017 release also covers the Aquanaut Travel Time Ref. 5650 Advanced Research, a separate white-gold model limited to 500 pieces. The release says its time-zone setting mechanism reduced the number of parts “from previously 37 to 12” and discusses a Spiromax balance-spring innovation. Those details apply to the 5650, not the Aquanaut Jumbo 5168G in this guide.

- For an integrated-bracelet look: the Royal Oak Ceramic, Octo Finissimo Automatic and steel Laureato Skeleton are the guide’s clearest matches, though their materials and designs differ.
- For a precious-metal case with a rubber strap: the Aquanaut 5168G is the outlier in the group, and Patek’s release confirms its 18K white-gold construction.
- For dual-time functionality: the Overseas Dual-Time is the relevant comparison, with the important qualification that the guide dates it to 2018.
- For a present-day purchase decision: treat every listed price as historical. The cited sources do not establish current inventory, retailer pricing or secondary-market values, so verify the exact reference and a current offer independently.
