The 2020 Bvlgari Gérald Genta Arena Bi-Retrograde Sport, reference 103448, pairs a jumping-hour aperture with retrograde minute and date displays. Its titanium case and automatic BVL 300 movement give the unusual dial a familiar mechanical foundation; its defining character comes from watching the hands sweep across their arcs and snap back to start.
How the Arena Bi-Retrograde display works
At 12 o’clock, an aperture shows the hour as a numeral that jumps forward rather than being indicated by a conventional hour hand. Below it, the minute hand travels along an arc and returns to its starting point after the 59th minute. A separate retrograde hand tracks the date and resets after the 31st day. Together, the three indications make the dial feel more like a set of animated instruments than a standard three-hand layout.
The two retrograde indications are the visual focus: each hand advances along its scale, then makes a quick return instead of completing a full circle. The jumping hour keeps the display compact at the top. The result is a distinctive presentation of familiar time and calendar information, though readers who prefer conventional hands and markers may find the layout less immediate at a glance.
Case, dial and strap
Fratello’s September 3, 2020 launch report lists a brushed titanium case measuring 43 mm across and 12 mm thick, with an anthracite dial and yellow accents, sapphire crystal, and a display back. It describes the strap as matte black alligator with a titanium pin buckle. Hodinkee’s 2020 introduction also reports a 43 mm titanium case and calls the strap black crocodile; the publications’ leather terminology differs, so it is best preserved as each source reports it. The case size is substantial on paper, but Fratello’s reviewer said it wore smaller than its 43 mm diameter suggested, partly because of the short lugs. WatchTested’s 2021 reviewer praised the comfort and case execution. These are subjective impressions from those reviewers, not universal fit guarantees; wrist shape and preferred proportions will affect how it wears.
Movement and launch-era specifications
The watch is powered by the automatic BVL 300. Fratello and Hodinkee both report a 42-hour power reserve and a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour. Hodinkee gives the movement’s diameter as 26.2 mm and thickness as 6.1 mm. These are specifications reported in launch-era coverage, not results of independent testing for this review.

Water resistance and everyday use
Fratello and Hodinkee published a 100 m water-resistance rating; Fratello also gives the equivalent as 10 bar. That is a reported specification, not evidence here of suitability for a particular water activity. The launch reports pair the watch with a leather strap, so anyone considering water exposure should check the specific watch’s condition and Bvlgari’s current guidance rather than treating the rating alone as an activity guarantee.
Launch price and availability: historical, not current
Fratello and Hodinkee reported a launch price of €15,000 in 2020. WatchTested reported a US retail price of $14,800 in its 2021 review. Those are dated figures from different reports and markets, not current quotations. Fratello said online availability was planned to begin in December 2020, while Hodinkee described e-commerce and select-boutique availability at launch. Who the Arena Bi-Retrograde Sport suits
Reference 103448 is most compelling for someone who wants a mechanical watch whose display is the main event. The combination of jumping hour and two retrograde scales offers a distinctly different way to read time and date, while the anthracite-and-yellow treatment reinforces its instrument-like look. It is less suited to a buyer seeking the simplicity of a conventional dial or a watch selected primarily for a verified current price, availability, or activity-specific water-use assurance.
