Yes—compatible Samsung Galaxy Watch models can notify you when your heart rate is unusually high or low. These configurable alerts are primarily designed for resting conditions, not as an instant alarm for every pulse change during exercise. They are wellness notifications based on optical sensor readings, not a diagnosis or substitute for medical care.
What Galaxy Watch heart-rate alerts actually do
Galaxy Watch high- and low-heart-rate alerts compare your pulse with thresholds you choose. A High HR alert is intended for a rate that remains above the selected level while you are resting. Samsung specifically describes the high-rate condition as lasting for 10 minutes at rest. The documentation does not establish one universal persistence period for every model or for the low-rate alert.

That means the watch is not designed to notify you immediately whenever your pulse briefly crosses a limit while you are walking, exercising, stressed or otherwise active. A high reading after activity may be a normal response, while a low resting pulse may be normal for some people.

Samsung warns that readings can be inaccurate, particularly when the heart rate is extremely high or low.

Samsung’s heart-rate support instructions explain the alert behavior and setup requirements.
Which Galaxy Watches support the alerts?
Support depends on the watch model and software generation. Samsung documents heart-rate alert settings for the original Galaxy Watch, Galaxy Watch Active, Galaxy Watch Active2 and Galaxy Watch models running Wear OS. The menu names and behavior are not necessarily identical across generations.
| Watch generation | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Wear OS Galaxy Watches | Use the current Samsung Health path: Settings, Heart rate, then Heart rate alert. |
| Older Tizen-based watches | Use the older “HR and stress measurement” and “HR alert settings” menus. |
| Samsung Health Monitor features | ECG and Irregular Heart Rhythm Notification have separate model, phone, age and regional requirements. |
If the setting is missing, do not assume that every Galaxy Watch supports every health feature. Update the watch, Samsung Health and Galaxy Wearable first, then confirm the exact model and region.

How to turn on high- and low-heart-rate alerts
Wear OS Galaxy Watches
- On the watch, swipe up to open the apps screen.
- Open Samsung Health.
- Swipe to and tap Settings.
- Tap Heart rate.
- Ensure heart-rate tracking is not set to Manual.
- Scroll to Heart rate alert.
- Turn on High HR, Low HR or both.
- Tap either alert to choose its threshold.
The watch should notify you when its configured conditions are met. Samsung says automatic heart-rate tracking is required; manual-only tracking may prevent the alert from working as expected.
Older Galaxy Watches
- Press the Power button or swipe up.
- Open Samsung Health.
- Swipe to Settings.
- Tap HR and stress measurement.
- Make sure heart-rate tracking is not set to Manual.
- Tap the three-dot More options menu.
- Tap HR alert settings.
- Turn on High HR and/or Low HR, then choose the threshold.
Labels can vary by model, country and software version. If you cannot find the option, install available updates and restart both the watch and phone.
How should you choose the thresholds?
There is no single “correct” high or low setting for everyone. Resting heart rate varies with fitness, age, medication, illness and individual circumstances. Choose thresholds that make sense for your normal baseline rather than copying a number from another person or treating the setting as a medical prescription.

Very sensitive settings may produce more notifications without making them more useful. If an alert repeatedly occurs at a level that is normal for you, discuss the threshold and the readings with a clinician rather than simply ignoring every notification.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHigh/low alerts are not ECG or AFib notifications
These features are easy to confuse, but they answer different questions:
| Feature | What it indicates |
|---|---|
| High/low heart-rate alert | Whether the pulse has met a selected beats-per-minute threshold under the feature’s conditions. It does not identify an abnormal rhythm. |
| ECG | A short, user-initiated recording of electrical activity through the watch and phone. Samsung says it is not intended to diagnose conditions or replace professional diagnosis and treatment. |
| Irregular Heart Rhythm Notification | A periodic check while you are still for a pattern that may suggest atrial fibrillation. It is not continuous and may not detect every episode; Samsung says episodes lasting less than one hour may not generate a notification. |
ECG and Irregular Heart Rhythm Notification are Samsung Health Monitor features, not simply extensions of the high/low rate alert. See Samsung’s Samsung Health Monitor information and its IHRN instructions for use for the relevant limitations.

Phone and regional compatibility
Basic Samsung Health functions, including ordinary heart-rate tracking, have broader compatibility than Samsung Health Monitor. Samsung says ECG, Irregular Heart Rhythm Notification and sleep-apnea features require a compatible Samsung Galaxy phone, and Samsung Health Monitor is not available on iPhone. Availability also varies by country or region.
Therefore, a non-Samsung Android phone may support basic watch heart-rate functions while not unlocking ECG or IHRN. Check Samsung’s Galaxy Watch and phone compatibility guidance and Samsung Health Monitor requirements for your specific combination. Samsung’s US documentation also states an age requirement of at least 22 for Samsung Health Monitor; local requirements may differ.
What to do after an alert
- Stop and sit quietly if the alert occurred during or shortly after activity.
- Check how you feel. Symptoms matter more than a watch notification.
- Repeat the reading after resting, and look for a recurring pattern.
- Check the fit. Wear the watch snugly, with the sensor in good contact with clean, dry skin.
- Use ECG if appropriate and available on your watch, Samsung phone and in your region. It is a recording for additional information, not a diagnosis.
- Contact a healthcare professional about repeated, unexpected alerts or readings that concern you.
Seek emergency help for severe or concerning symptoms—such as chest pain, fainting, severe shortness of breath or sudden weakness—regardless of what the watch says. Do not wait for a second watch reading when symptoms suggest an emergency.

Troubleshooting missing or unreliable alerts
The alert options are missing
- Verify that your model supports the documented feature.
- Update the watch, Samsung Health and Galaxy Wearable.
- Change heart-rate tracking from Manual to an automatic option.
- Look on the watch itself; the setting may not appear in the phone app.
- Check phone, region and feature compatibility if you are looking for ECG or IHRN rather than a basic rate alert.
- Restart the watch and phone.
The alert seems wrong
Movement, exercise, emotional stress, a loose fit, sweat, dirt, lotion, cold skin or weak sensor contact can affect optical readings. Recheck the measurement at rest with clean, dry skin and a secure fit. Treat a repeated unexpected result differently from an isolated reading, but neither should be interpreted as a diagnosis.
An ECG says “inconclusive”
Samsung says an ECG can be inconclusive when the heart rate is too high or low, the rhythm does not fit the available classifications, or recording conditions are poor. Clean the watch and skin, warm cold skin, wear the watch snugly, move it slightly away from the wrist bone and remain still for 5–10 minutes before trying again. Repeated inconclusive results warrant medical advice. See Samsung’s ECG troubleshooting guidance.
Should you buy a newer Galaxy Watch for this feature?
Not necessarily. Samsung does not present basic high- and low-heart-rate alerts as exclusive to its newest watch generation, so an owner of a compatible older model may only need to enable the setting.
For a new buyer, choose based on the wider package:
- Galaxy Watch8: the mainstream current option for general Samsung Health, fitness and smartwatch use. Samsung’s June 2026 US MSRP sheet listed models from $349.99, but live prices and promotions can differ.
- Galaxy Watch7: a possible value choice when discounted substantially.
- Galaxy Watch8 Classic: a premium design and control choice, not an obvious purchase for heart-rate alerts alone.
- Galaxy Watch Ultra: aimed at rugged, outdoor and LTE use rather than simply providing basic pulse notifications.
Confirm the current price, phone compatibility and regional availability on Samsung’s Galaxy Watch8 page or its watch product pages. Buying a Samsung phone solely for ECG or IHRN is only sensible after checking the exact model, software and region requirements.
Bottom line
A compatible Galaxy Watch can alert you when your resting heart rate stays above or below a threshold you set. Enable automatic heart-rate tracking, use the menu path for your watch’s software generation, and treat the result as an awareness signal—not a medical alarm. Recheck surprising readings, pay attention to symptoms and seek professional care for repeated concerns.
