1. Modular Ultra: best overall
Modular Ultra is the strongest starting point because Apple designed it specifically for the Ultra display. It can use the outermost edge of the screen for information such as seconds, altitude or depth, while its main layout provides seven complication positions. A practical Modular Ultra setup
- Center: Workout, weather, elevation or another large training metric.
- Top-left: Temperature or current conditions.
- Top-right: Battery or date.
- Bottom-left: Timer or stopwatch.
- Bottom-middle: Activity rings, steps or a training metric.
- Bottom-right: Compass, sunset or heart rate.
- Outer edge: Altitude for hiking, depth for water activity, or seconds for timing.
2. Wayfinder: best for hiking and navigation
Choose Wayfinder when the Ultra 2’s outdoor identity matters more than maximum information density. Its outer ring can function as a compass and can show latitude and longitude, making it a natural fit for navigation and travel. Apple documents Wayfinder’s features in its Apple Watch face guide.
Wayfinder has a more traditional adventure-watch appearance than Modular Ultra. It is easier to keep visually calm, but it cannot present as many useful data points at once.
Suggested Wayfinder setup
- Ring: Compass.
- Main complication: Elevation, weather or Workout.
- Top-left: Current temperature.
- Top-right: Battery.
- Bottom-left: Timer.
- Bottom-right: Sunset or waypoint-related information.
3. Waypoint: best for location-focused use
Waypoint is worth considering for location reminders, outdoor travel and a dedicated adventure setup. However, do not assume it appears on every Ultra 2. Face availability can vary with the installed watchOS release and compatibility, so confirm it in Face Gallery → See All Watch Faces before planning around it.

For a general outdoor dashboard, Modular Ultra remains more flexible. Waypoint makes more sense when location and route context are the priority.
4. Activity Digital: best for fitness
Activity Digital is a good choice for gym sessions, running, cycling and readers who want fitness progress to dominate the display. It keeps the time digital and straightforward while making activity information easy to reach.
Useful complications include Activity rings, Workout, heart rate, a training metric, Timer and Battery. Its limitation is that it does not make as much use of the Ultra-focused outer-edge treatment as Modular Ultra, and it is less helpful for navigation.

5. Infograph Modular: best data-rich everyday face
Infograph Modular is the practical office, travel and daily-use option for anyone who wants many complications in a familiar rectangular layout. It works well with a mixture of Apple and third-party complications and is less visually adventure-oriented than the Ultra-specific faces.
Try Calendar, Weather, Reminders, Timer, Battery and World Clock for work or travel. It is highly useful, but Modular Ultra is usually the better choice if you specifically want to exploit the Ultra 2’s edge data and Night Mode features.
6. Solar Analog: best elegant free face
Solar Analog presents the time on a luminous dial whose light-and-shadow treatment changes with the sun’s position. Apple introduced it with watchOS 10. It suits formal wear, office use and anyone who wants the Ultra 2 to look less like a data dashboard.
The trade-off is deliberate simplicity: it offers fewer at-a-glance data points than Modular Ultra or Infograph Modular. Use only the complications you genuinely need rather than turning it into another crowded dashboard.
7. Snoopy: best playful choice
Snoopy and Woodstock interact with the watch hands and respond to conditions including weather and workouts. It is a strong casual or secondary face for users who value personality more than navigation or training data.

Snoopy is not the best primary face for rapid access to several complications. Keep it for weekends, casual wear or a rotating collection.

8. Photos or Portraits: best personal face
Photos and Portraits are the simplest way to personalize the Ultra 2 with family pictures, pets, travel memories or an image that matches a band. Their weakness is utility: photo-focused layouts generally provide less room for live complications than the data-rich faces.

These are starting points rather than universal prescriptions. Eyesight, activities, preferred complications and tolerance for visual density should determine the final layout.
What “free” means on Apple Watch
“Free watch face” can describe several different things:

- Completely free native face: Included with watchOS and installed through Apple’s Face Gallery without another face app or payment.
- Free configuration: The face costs nothing, but a desired complication may belong to a paid app.
- Free-to-download face app: The app can be installed without an upfront charge but may include advertising, subscriptions, paid face packs or restricted features.
For a dependable no-cost setup, use native Apple faces first. Third-party complications can add useful information, but their apps may have separate pricing or availability requirements.
Can third-party apps create a true native Apple Watch face?
Third-party apps such as Facer and WatchMaker advertise large libraries of designs, while Buddywatch focuses on discovery and shared configurations. They can be useful for artistic designs, community collections, photo-based experiences and complications. They should not automatically be treated as equivalent to a native watchOS face.
Apple’s documented workflow centers on native faces in the Face Gallery, shared Apple face configurations and complications. A third-party design may depend on an iPhone app, an Apple Watch app, an account, an app remaining available, a photo workaround or a subscription. Some designs may also behave differently when the display dims.

Facer is a free download that advertises more than 500,000 designs, including free options, but also includes in-app purchases and requires its iPhone and Apple Watch apps for setup. It is best for branded, artistic and community-created variety. See its App Store listing.
WatchMaker advertises more than 150,000 designs, face creation tools and Ultra 2 support, but its listing includes advertising, paid faces, in-app purchases and subscription or lifetime options. Buddywatch is a free download aimed at face discovery, sharing, compatibility tags and community collections. It includes optional VIP features and in-app face creation. It is useful for browsing, but a shared configuration may still depend on third-party complications. See the Buddywatch App Store listing.
App Store prices, features and compatibility can change by country and over time. Treat these apps as optional discovery tools, not as guaranteed replacements for Apple’s native face system.

From the iPhone
- Open the Apple Watch app.
- Tap Face Gallery.
- Choose a category such as Health & Fitness, Photos or Data Rich.
- Select the face.
- Choose its color, style, bezel and complications.
- Tap Add to Watch.

- Display the current watch face.
- Touch and hold the display.
- Swipe left to the end and tap the Add button.
- Choose a category or browse all faces.
- Tap Get beside the face, then tap Add.
- Customize the face afterward if necessary.
Switch between saved faces
Touch and hold the current face, swipe to the face you want and tap it. You can also enable Settings → Clock → Swipe to Switch Watch Face if you prefer changing faces with a swipe.

Share a face
- Open the Apple Watch app and select a face in My Faces or Face Gallery.
- Tap the Share button.
- Choose Messages, Mail or another sharing method.
- The recipient opens the shared face and taps Add.
If the face contains a third-party complication, the recipient may be asked to download or pay for its app. Apple allows the recipient to choose Continue Without This App, but that complication will not work as intended.
What to do when a face or complication is missing
A face does not appear
- Update the Ultra 2 to the latest watchOS version it supports.
- Confirm that the iPhone and watch are paired and communicating.
- Check Face Gallery → See All Watch Faces.
- Confirm that the face supports the watch model and software version.
- Check whether a family or managed-device restriction affects App Store or complication installation.
- Do not confuse a third-party app’s in-app design with a native Face Gallery face.
A complication is unavailable
- Install the complication’s app if it is required.
- Check that the app supports Apple Watch, not only iPhone.
- Try a face slot that supports that complication type.
- If you received a shared face, check whether you selected Continue Without This App.
- Confirm whether the complication requires a paid plan.
- Allow the app to refresh and grant any required data permissions.

Modular Ultra versus Wayfinder
Choose Modular Ultra when maximum information, workout access, edge data or Night Mode is more important than a restrained appearance. Choose Wayfinder when compass navigation, an outdoor-watch look and fewer larger information elements are the priority.
Neither is universally better. Modular Ultra is the stronger dashboard; Wayfinder is often the calmer navigation face.
A sensible three-face collection
- Modular Ultra: Daily use, workouts, weather and battery awareness.
- Wayfinder: Hiking, navigation and outdoor travel.
- Solar Analog, Snoopy or Photos: Minimalist, casual or personal use.
That combination provides practical information without requiring a subscription or a third-party face service.
