Press the side button to open Control Center, then tap the bell-shaped Silent Mode button. Apple Watch will mute normal notification sounds, alerts, and sound effects, while haptic taps and visual notifications can remain available. Silent Mode is the right choice when you want a quiet watch without missing alerts entirely.
Apple’s instructions apply to current Apple Watch software, although labels and Control Center behavior can vary by watchOS version, model, language, and region.

Turn on Silent Mode from Apple Watch
- Press the side button to open Control Center.
- Tap the Silent Mode control, shown with a bell icon.
- Press the side button again or turn your wrist away to close Control Center.
Open Control Center again if you want to verify that the Silent Mode control is selected. Status icons at the top can also indicate active modes. On current watchOS versions, the side button is the recommended way to open Control Center; older guides may tell you to swipe up from the bottom.

Turn on Silent Mode from iPhone
You can change the setting from the paired iPhone:
- Open the Apple Watch app.
- Tap My Watch.
- Tap Sounds & Haptics.
- Turn on Silent Mode.
This is useful when the watch is charging, out of reach, or difficult to operate. Apple documents both the on-watch and iPhone methods on its Apple Watch sound settings page.
What Silent Mode does—and does not do
Silent Mode mutes normal Apple Watch alerts, notifications, and sound effects. It does not generally block notifications: messages and other alerts can still appear on the display, and haptic notifications can still tap your wrist.
- Sound: Normal alert and notification sounds are muted.
- Haptics: Wrist taps remain available unless haptics are disabled or another setting prevents them.
- Visual alerts: Notifications can still appear on the screen.
- Display: Silent Mode does not stop the display from lighting or waking normally.
- Media: Audio played as media has separate volume controls and should not be confused with notification volume.
There is an important charging exception: Apple says alarms and timers can still sound while Apple Watch is charging, even when Silent Mode is enabled. Therefore, “Silent Mode mutes every sound” is not reliable wording.

Silent Mode vs. Theater Mode, Do Not Disturb, and Focus
Choose the mode according to what you want to prevent:

Use Theater Mode when the screen is also a problem
Press the side button, open Control Center, and tap the Theater Mode icon. Theater Mode turns on Silent Mode and keeps the display dark when you raise your wrist, which is less distracting in a cinema or lecture hall. Haptic notifications can still be delivered. Apple also notes that Walkie-Talkie is unavailable while Theater Mode is active. Details are available in Apple’s guide to Apple Watch modes.
Use Do Not Disturb or Focus when you want no interruptions
Silent Mode is not enough if you also want to stop haptic taps or visual notifications. Press the side button, tap the Do Not Disturb/Focus control, and select the mode you need. When offered, choose an end point such as one hour or until you leave a location.

Do Not Disturb is useful for a temporary quiet period. Focus is better when you need allowed people or apps, recurring schedules, or behavior coordinated with an iPhone Focus. Apple lists alarms as an exception in its mode comparison, so do not assume that Do Not Disturb cancels every alarm.

If you do not want to enable Silent Mode permanently, use Cover to Mute:
- Place your palm over the Apple Watch display.
- Keep it there for at least three seconds, or until you feel a confirming tap.
This temporarily silences the alert currently sounding—for example, an incoming call or timer alert. It does not turn on persistent Silent Mode, and you can still manage the call or timer afterward. Apple says wake-up alarms are not silenced by this gesture.

If Cover to Mute does nothing, open Settings → Gestures on the watch and make sure Cover to Mute is enabled. Cover the entire display and hold your palm in place for the full three seconds. See Apple’s Cover to Mute instructions.

Silent Mode normally leaves haptic notifications available, but haptics may be turned off or too weak to notice. On Apple Watch, open Settings → Sounds & Haptics → Haptics, then choose Default or Prominent rather than Off.
Prominent haptics add an extra tap that can help announce some alerts. Also wear the watch comfortably snug, with the back making consistent contact with your skin. A loose fit, poor contact, or expecting a stronger tap than the Default setting provides can make alerts easy to miss.

Current Apple documentation separates several feedback settings:
- Haptics: Wrist taps for notifications and alerts.
- Crown Haptics: Feedback when rotating the Digital Crown.
- System Haptics: Feedback from system controls and interactions.
Changing Crown Haptics or System Haptics does not necessarily fix missing notification taps. Check the main Haptics setting first. Apple’s watchOS 26 audio and haptics guide describes these controls.
If Apple Watch still makes a sound
- Check Silent Mode: Open Control Center and confirm the bell control is active.
- Check whether the watch is charging: An alarm or timer may still sound while charging.
- Identify the audio: Media playback uses separate volume controls and is not the same as a notification alert.
- Choose a stronger mode: If you also need to suppress haptics and visual interruptions, use Do Not Disturb or an appropriate Focus.
Lowering the volume is not the same as enabling Silent Mode. A low volume can still produce an audible alert, while Silent Mode is the dedicated control for muting normal watch sounds.

A separate watchOS 26 volume feature
On watchOS 26 and later, supported models can automatically adjust ringtone and alert volume according to surrounding conditions. The available choices are Louder, Default, and Quieter; you can also disable automatic adjustment and set a fixed volume manually.
This is separate from Silent Mode and is not a replacement for it. Apple lists the feature for Apple Watch SE 3, Series 9, Ultra 2, and later models. Availability depends on the watch model and software version. See Apple’s current sound settings documentation for details.
