Yes. You can erase and reset an Apple Watch without entering its watch passcode. However, this is a destructive erase—not a passcode bypass—and it does not remove Activation Lock. Afterward, you may still need the Apple Account email address or phone number and password used to set up the watch.
What happens when you reset an Apple Watch?
Apple’s documented solution for a forgotten or disabled Apple Watch passcode is to erase the watch and set it up again. There is no supported way to display or recover the existing watch passcode while preserving the watch’s contents. See Apple’s passcode instructions.

An erase removes content and settings stored locally on the watch, including apps and app data, media, contacts, photos, music, Apple Pay cards, settings, health and activity information stored on the watch, and the watch passcode. Content already stored in iCloud is not deleted just because the watch is erased. Data that was not synchronized or included in a backup may not be recoverable.

Method 1: Reset the Apple Watch without an iPhone
Use this method if the watch is locked, disabled, or you no longer have access to its paired iPhone. Apple’s exact labels can vary slightly by watchOS version or region.

- Place the Apple Watch on its charger and leave it there during the process.
- Press and hold the side button until the power button appears in the upper-right corner of the display.
- Press and hold the Digital Crown until “Erase all content and settings” appears.
- Tap Reset.
- Tap Reset again to confirm.
- Wait for the erase to finish, then set up the watch again.
When setup offers a backup, choose one if it is available. A backup can restore much of the watch’s configuration and synchronized information, but it is not a guarantee that every recent item will return.
Method 2: Erase it through the paired iPhone
If you still have the paired iPhone and can unlock it, this is usually the cleaner option because properly unpairing the watch also removes Activation Lock.

- Keep the Apple Watch and iPhone close together.
- Open the Apple Watch app on the iPhone.
- Tap My Watch, then General.
- Tap Reset.
- Tap Erase Apple Watch Content and Settings, then confirm.
- Enter the Apple Account password if prompted.
- Restore from a backup during setup if one is offered.
On a GPS + Cellular model, you may be asked whether to keep or remove the cellular plan. Keep it if you will pair the same watch with the same iPhone again. Remove it if you are transferring the watch to another person or will no longer use it with that iPhone. Removing the plan from the watch does not necessarily cancel the carrier subscription; cancellation may require contacting the carrier. Resetting is not the same as removing Activation Lock
This distinction matters most when a watch has changed hands.

A direct erase deletes the watch’s data but does not prove ownership to Apple’s activation system. If Activation Lock appears during setup, enter the Apple Account credentials associated with the watch. The watch passcode and Apple Account password are separate credentials. See Apple’s explanation of Activation Lock.
What if you bought the Apple Watch used?
A reset alone does not make a secondhand Apple Watch ready for a new owner. During setup, the watch should not request the previous owner’s Apple Account. If it does, Activation Lock is still enabled.

- Ask the seller to enter their Apple Account credentials and remove the watch from their account.
- Confirm that the watch has been erased and reaches the normal pairing/setup screen.
- Do not rely on a passcode lock screen or Home screen as evidence that the watch is transferable.
- For a cellular model, confirm that an unwanted cellular plan is no longer attached.
If the previous owner cannot remove the watch, an ordinary reset will not bypass Activation Lock. Be wary of services claiming to remove it through unofficial software or hardware methods. Apple’s used-device guidance explains what buyers should check.

Only information that was synchronized or backed up may be restored. Recent health or activity data that existed only on the watch when it was erased may be lost. Apple Pay cards must be added again for security reasons, even when other settings are restored.

Erasing the watch does not by itself delete information already stored in iCloud. During setup, select an available backup rather than configuring the watch as entirely new if you want to recover the previous configuration.
If the erase option does not appear
- Confirm that the watch is connected to its charger.
- Wait for the power-button screen to appear before holding the Digital Crown.
- Hold the Digital Crown long enough for the erase screen to load.
- If the watch is frozen, restart it and repeat the documented procedure.
- If it still will not erase, contact Apple Support or an Apple service provider.
Apple Watch has no physical reset button or SIM slot. Do not insert tools or other objects into the speaker, microphone, or other openings. If you have repeatedly guessed the passcode, stop trying combinations. A watch can be configured to erase after 10 incorrect attempts, but that behavior applies only when the optional Erase Data setting was enabled beforehand. Special cases
No paired iPhone
You can still erase the watch directly while it is on its charger, but Activation Lock remains. You will need the Apple Account used to set up the watch before you can use it again.

A receipt does not automatically remove Activation Lock. Depending on the circumstances, the family may need to recover access through Apple’s account and estate procedures or contact Apple Support for guidance. Eligibility and required documentation depend on Apple’s current policies.
Remote erase through Find My
Remote erasure can protect or delete data, but it should not be treated as a guaranteed way to remove Activation Lock. Account removal and unpairing are separate steps.
