Galaxy Watch5 and newer models can measure skin temperature automatically while you sleep, but Samsung’s feature is not an on-demand thermometer and cannot reliably tell you whether you have a fever. It is mainly intended for overnight trends and Samsung Health cycle predictions.
Which Samsung Galaxy Watches measure temperature?
Samsung lists the Galaxy Watch5 and newer models as compatible with its skin-temperature feature. The infrared temperature sensor arrived with the Watch5 generation, so Galaxy Watch4 and older models lack the hardware for this native measurement. Samsung also supports skin-temperature tracking with Galaxy Ring, but it is a separate device. Feature availability can vary by region and software; check Samsung Health on your device if Cycle Tracking or its temperature option is not available. What kind of temperature does it measure?
The watch uses an infrared sensor to measure skin temperature, not core body temperature. Skin temperature is affected by conditions at the wrist and around you, so its value can differ substantially from an oral, ear, forehead, or rectal thermometer reading. Samsung presents the data as an overnight trend and a representative daily value, not as a stream of clinical measurements. Samsung explains the difference between skin-temperature data and thermometer readings.
How to turn on skin-temperature tracking
Samsung’s current setup route is in Samsung Health on the connected Android phone. Labels may vary with region, language, and app version.

- Open Samsung Health on your phone and select the Home tab.
- Tap Cycle tracking.
- Tap the three-dot More options icon, then select Settings.
- Turn on Predict period with skin temp.
- Wear the compatible Galaxy Watch while sleeping. Return to Cycle tracking in Samsung Health to view the recorded information.
Samsung’s Cycle Tracking instructions specify Android for this workflow; do not assume the same temperature-based setup is available through Samsung Health on iPhone.
When does the watch take a reading?
The native feature records temperature during sleep, not during the day, and does not support a manual skin-temperature reading. Samsung says the watch needs at least four consecutive hours of sleep between 7 p.m. and 9 a.m. for a measurement. The feature is therefore not a way to check your temperature whenever you feel unwell. Samsung’s FAQ says it provides a representative daily value rather than individual spot readings. Can a Samsung Watch detect a fever?
No—not as a dependable fever check. A change in overnight skin temperature may reflect a change in your body or surroundings, but it cannot establish that you have a fever or rule illness out. Samsung says Cycle Tracking is for personal reference, not for medical diagnosis, prevention, or treatment. Use a thermometer designed for body-temperature measurement if you need to check for fever, and seek medical advice for severe, persistent, or concerning symptoms. Samsung’s FAQ states the feature’s medical-use limitation.
How to get more consistent overnight data

- Wear the watch snugly enough to maintain skin contact, about one finger’s distance above the wrist bone toward the forearm.
- Wear it for at least four hours during sleep; Samsung recommends using it at least five nights per week for more consistent results.
- Clean the infrared sensor lens and ensure it is not obstructed.
- Start the night with at least 30% battery, as Samsung recommends.
- Keep sleep conditions as consistent as practical, including room temperature, clothing, posture, and sleep position.

Why might data be missing or seem inaccurate?
First distinguish a night with no eligible measurement from an apparent device problem. A short night, daytime wear, a disabled setting, poor sensor contact, or low battery can prevent a reading or make trends less consistent. Environmental changes and comparing skin temperature directly with a thermometer can also explain differing values.

- Check that your model is Watch5 or newer and that Predict period with skin temp is enabled.
- Confirm you wore the watch for the required sleep period, with a snug fit above the wrist bone and at least 30% battery before bed.
- Clean the sensor area and check that nothing is covering it.
- Update Samsung Health, Galaxy Wearable, and watch software; open Samsung Health and refresh or swipe down to sync.
- If the watch has been disconnected from the phone, reconnect and sync. Samsung says the watch can retain the last 28 days of relevant data pending synchronization.
- If data remains absent after these checks, restart the watch and phone, then contact Samsung Support; a software check cannot rule out a hardware fault.
If you alternate between a Galaxy Watch and Galaxy Ring, the trend may also be inconsistent because wrist and finger temperatures differ. Samsung advises using one device consistently for longitudinal tracking. Samsung’s Canada guidance discusses switching between Watch and Ring; its FAQ describes the 28-day retention period.

Samsung Health can use compatible-device skin-temperature data to improve period and ovulation predictions when the option is enabled and the watch is worn overnight. Predictions are estimates, not guaranteed dates or medical findings. Samsung says results can be affected by wear, environment, illness, medication, travel, and changes in routine. The feature is not contraception and should not be used to make medical decisions. Samsung also says it is not intended for users under 18 or for users receiving treatment or medication that suppresses ovulation. The readings are not interchangeable, and there is no universal conversion from wrist skin temperature to a thermometer result. Samsung’s explanation of skin temperature covers why a comparison may not match.
Should temperature tracking affect your watch choice?
Consider it a secondary benefit if you already want a compatible Galaxy Watch for broader smartwatch, sleep, or fitness functions and value passive overnight trends. It is a poor reason to buy one if your primary need is an immediate temperature reading, daytime tracking, or help making a medical decision. For those needs, choose a thermometer designed for body-temperature measurement. A Galaxy Ring is another option for passive overnight skin-temperature tracking, but for consistent trends Samsung advises sticking with one device rather than alternating between finger and wrist measurements.
