No—not as an official or practical VR headset. Samsung designed Gear VR for specific Galaxy phones, and an iPhone cannot run the Samsung and Oculus software that initializes the headset. It may fit inside some Gear VR shells, but fitting is not compatibility. If you’re considering buying one for an iPhone, don’t.
Why Gear VR needs a compatible Galaxy phone
Gear VR is not a standalone headset. The phone supplies the screen, graphics processing, operating system, motion-sensor data and VR apps. The headset supplies the lenses, controls, USB connection and model-specific alignment. Samsung describes Gear VR as powered by compatible Galaxy smartphones, and its compatibility list names Galaxy models rather than iPhones. Samsung’s overview of Gear VR explains that phone-based design.
Gear VR also depends on phone-side Samsung/Oculus software. iOS has no official Gear VR installation or setup path, so an iPhone cannot launch the intended Gear VR environment.
Why an adapter or physical fit won’t make it work
Samsung’s adapters address connector differences between supported Galaxy phones and particular Gear VR models. They do not add Gear VR software to iOS, change the iPhone’s operating system or provide the required device integration. A USB adapter is therefore not an iPhone solution.

An iPhone might be held in a headset shell for improvised viewing through a generic split-screen or 360-degree video app. That would be a makeshift phone viewer, not Gear VR. It does not guarantee correct lens alignment, headset calibration, head tracking, controller support or USB communication; the connector may also obstruct the phone. Image quality, battery drain and heat can be concerns.
Gear VR and Gear 360 are different products
Gear VR is Samsung’s phone-based VR headset. Gear 360 is a 360-degree camera. The existence of a Samsung Gear 360 app for iPhone does not mean the headset supports iPhone: the app controls the camera, not a VR headset. The U.S. App Store listing identifies the Gear 360 app, specifies supported iPhone models and iOS versions, and says compatibility and support updates ended August 1, 2020.

Which phones were officially compatible?
Compatibility depends on the exact Gear VR model and the phone connector. Samsung’s support table, updated April 3, 2024, lists these examples:

Check Samsung’s full compatibility table for the precise model and connector requirements. Samsung also lists the Galaxy S20 through S24 families and Note10/Note20 families as incompatible. This table establishes historical hardware compatibility, not that every phone listed can still access the original service ecosystem in 2026.

What if you already own a Gear VR?
- Find the headset model number. Look on the headset, box or documentation for a code such as SM-R320, SM-R321, SM-R322, SM-R323, SM-R324 or SM-R325.
- Match that exact model to Samsung’s table. Don’t rely on a generic listing that says only “Gear VR”; connector and phone requirements differ.
- If your phone is an iPhone, stop there. There is no official iPhone setup path, and an adapter will not supply one.
- If you have an older Galaxy, check its software state. An historically compatible phone may fail if it has Android 12, lacks Gear VR system packages, cannot access Oculus services, has the wrong connector or adapter, or no longer fits with its case installed.
- Set expectations before testing. Gear VR is a legacy platform. A setup that still launches may not offer every original app, store item, video service or online feature.
Samsung support says Gear VR support stopped on Android 12 because the required software was not included in that version. Samsung also documents discontinued or unsupported components and Oculus service maintenance limitations. See Samsung’s Gear VR software support information. The practical result varies with the old phone’s firmware, app state, region and content; the headset should not be assumed either fully supported or universally unusable.

Basic 360-degree viewing on an iPhone
A generic smartphone VR viewer may handle split-screen or 360-degree video, but check the specific viewer’s stated phone-size range, case clearance and lens adjustment before buying. It is a passive viewer, not a Gear VR replacement: it does not provide the integrated Gear VR software, controller experience or app ecosystem.

Using an iPhone in a PC-VR setup
iVRy is an iPhone app for a different setup involving a compatible headset or viewer and SteamVR on a VR-capable computer. It does not make Gear VR compatible. The route can require network or wired configuration and troubleshooting for latency and tracking.
VR apps and games without a phone inserted
A modern standalone VR headset is a more suitable choice for immersive apps, games and motion tracking. It is a separate product category, not an iPhone accessory. Apple Vision Pro is likewise a complete spatial-computing product with its own visionOS app ecosystem and setup process, not a Gear VR-compatible device; see Apple’s Vision Pro buying page.

Common points of confusion
- “It fits, so it should work.” Physical fit does not install the headset software or provide integration with iOS.
- “The app says iPhone VR.” A generic viewer app may support passive phone viewing, not Samsung’s Gear VR system.
- “The Gear 360 app works on iPhone.” That app is for a separate camera, not the Gear VR headset.
- “My newer Samsung phone should work.” Samsung excludes newer Galaxy families from the Gear VR compatibility table, and Android 12 presents an additional software barrier.
