Yes, you can take a sound, correctly closed Tudor dive watch into the water, but a 200 m rating is not a promise that a person can safely freedive to 200 m. For the current Tudor Black Bay 58, reference M7939A1A0NU-0001, Tudor lists waterproofness of 200 m (660 ft), a screw-down crown and a unidirectional bezel intended to measure elapsed dive time. Those specifications describe the watch and its tested water-resistance rating—not your freediving limit, a depth gauge or a substitute for training and activity-specific equipment. See the official Black Bay 58 specifications.
Before a dive, verify the exact reference, make sure the crown is fully screwed down, and consider the watch’s service and seal history. Tudor’s published material does not give a blanket freediving endorsement for every Tudor model, and no individual watch can be assumed to retain its original resistance without appropriate inspection.

What the 200 m rating actually tells you
Water resistance is a manufacturer-stated performance rating for a particular watch reference. It is not a depth permission printed for the wearer. Tudor lists the Black Bay 58 M7939A1A0NU-0001 as waterproof to 200 m (660 ft). The rating is tied to the model’s construction and specified tests, while the condition of your individual watch depends on its seals, crown, case and maintenance history.
The same number appears on another specific reference, the Black Bay 41 mm M7941A1A0RU-0002. Tudor states that model is waterproof to 200 m (660 ft) “in accordance with ISO standard.” That wording belongs to that product page; it does not establish that every Tudor watch has the same rating or that every model is separately certified in the same way. Check the documentation for the reference you actually own.

A watch marked 200 m can therefore be suitable for water exposure when it is in proper condition and operated as instructed, but the number should not be rewritten as “safe to freedive to 200 m.” Tudor’s product pages do not identify the Black Bay 58 as a freediving depth instrument or make a universal statement approving all Tudor watches for freediving.
Two current references, checked separately
| Model and reference | Tudor-listed waterproofness | Listed functions and wording | What you can reasonably conclude |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black Bay 58, M7939A1A0NU-0001 | 200 m (660 ft) | Screw-down crown; unidirectional rotating bezel for precise measurement of dive times | The current product page supports discussing this exact model’s rated water resistance and elapsed-time bezel. It does not list a depth display or a freediving endorsement. Tudor product page |
| Black Bay 41 mm, M7941A1A0RU-0002 | 200 m (660 ft), stated in accordance with an ISO standard | Screw-down crown; unidirectional rotating bezel for dive time | This shows why model-specific documentation matters. Its rating should not be silently applied to other Tudor references. Tudor product page |
How ISO 6425 relates to a dive-watch rating
ISO 6425:2018 is the international standard titled “Horology — Divers’ watches.” ISO says it specifies requirements and test methods for divers’ watches and saturation divers’ watches intended for deep diving. The standard applies to diver’s watches designed for at least 100 m and equipped with a secured system for measuring dive time that can be read in darkness. ISO’s status page says the 2018 edition was published in October 2018, reviewed and confirmed in 2024, and remains current: ISO 6425:2018.
The practical test description in the surfaced standard text uses L for the manufacturer-guaranteed dive depth. It describes a condition simulating one hour at that guaranteed depth, followed by one hour at 3 m. In other words, the test checks whether a watch remains undamaged and operates after specified exposure. It is a standardized laboratory condition, not a measurement of a diver’s physiological limit, and not a current-condition test for a watch that has aged, been opened or suffered impact. The excerpt is available in the ISO 6425:2018 text sample.

What the standard does not establish
- It does not certify that a person can descend to the number on the case.
- It does not turn a time bezel into a depth gauge or freediving computer.
- It does not prove that an older or damaged watch still meets its original rating today.
- It does not make every Tudor model equivalent; the reference-specific product documentation remains decisive.
Why the Black Bay bezel is not a depth instrument
Tudor describes the Black Bay 58’s bezel as follows: “The unidirectional rotatable bezel allows precise measurement of dive times.” The bezel is therefore an elapsed-time indicator. You align its marker with the minute hand at the start of a dive and read elapsed minutes as the hand moves. That function is useful for timing, but it does not sense, calculate or display depth.
Freediving decisions can require information that an elapsed-time bezel cannot provide, such as current depth, ascent or descent rate, surface-interval timing and personal limits. The Tudor specification does not claim to provide those measurements. If you use a separate depth-and-time instrument for your activity, treat it as distinct equipment rather than as a capability of the watch.

- Identify the exact reference. Read the case, warranty material and product documentation. Do not infer a rating from the Tudor name alone. Confirm the reference-specific waterproofness and crown instructions on Tudor’s site.
- Inspect the exterior. Look for a cracked crystal, damaged crown, loose bezel, case damage or any sign that the watch has been opened. A visual check cannot prove water resistance, but visible damage is a reason not to rely on the rating.
- Close the crown correctly. Tudor says the winding crown is screwed down onto the case to ensure water resistance and “must be fully tightened after each manipulation.” Push the crown back in and screw it down carefully before water exposure. The same instruction appears in Tudor’s user guide: Tudor User Guide.
- Consider service history. If the watch has an uncertain maintenance history, has been opened by an unknown workshop or has experienced a hard impact, do not treat the original rating as proof of present resistance. Arrange an assessment through an authorized Tudor service channel.
- Set the timing reference before immersion. If you use the bezel, rotate it only in the intended one-way direction and align it at the start of the timed activity. Remember that it records elapsed time, not depth.
- Rinse after salt water. Tudor’s user guide recommends rinsing the watch with fresh water after salt-water exposure. Dry it with a soft, clean cloth and avoid operating the crown while the watch is wet.
Condition matters as much as the printed rating
A published specification describes a new or properly maintained watch under the manufacturer’s test conditions. It does not inspect your particular watch. Gaskets can age, a crown can fail to seat completely, and a case can be compromised by impact or unauthorized opening. None of those possibilities changes the number on the product page, but each can change the condition of the watch in your hand.

Tudor describes its watches as complex precision mechanisms requiring periodic servicing and maintenance. The cited guide does not establish one universal service interval for every model, environment or owner, so do not apply an invented timetable. Instead, follow the service guidance for your reference and have water resistance checked when the watch’s history or condition is uncertain.
Situations that warrant an inspection before water use
- The crown no longer screws down smoothly or stops short of its normal seated position.
- The watch has been dropped, struck or exposed to a shock that may have affected the case.
- The caseback, crystal or crown has been opened, replaced or repaired.
- There is condensation under the crystal, unexplained fogging or visible moisture.
- You cannot establish when the last appropriate service or pressure test occurred.
The reviewed Tudor material and ISO description do not provide a pass/fail diagnosis for any individual watch. A qualified service assessment is the appropriate way to establish present water resistance when those warning signs exist.

Freediving use: separate the watch question from the diver-safety question
For the watch, a properly closed Black Bay 58 with intact seals has a manufacturer-listed 200 m (660 ft) rating. For the diver, that rating says nothing about training, equalization, blackout risk, buddy procedures, currents, temperature or the safe depth of a particular session. The available Tudor and ISO material contains no freediving outcome statistics and no claim that the watch protects a diver.
That distinction prevents two opposite mistakes. It would be wrong to call the watch unsuitable for any water use simply because the number is a rating rather than a guarantee. It would be equally wrong to read “200 m” as permission to attempt a 200 m freedive. Use appropriate training, supervision and activity-specific safety procedures independently of what is on the watch dial.
Common activity questions
- Surface swimming or snorkeling: A sound watch with its crown fully secured is within the kind of water exposure its 200 m listing is intended to cover, but the condition check and post-saltwater rinse still apply.
- Pool sessions: Chlorinated water does not remove the need to close the crown correctly or maintain the seals. Rinse the watch afterward as part of routine care.
- Recreational freediving: The watch’s rating can describe its water resistance, while the bezel can time an interval. Neither feature supplies depth data or establishes a personal safe limit.
- Deep or specialized diving: Confirm the exact model’s documentation and current condition, and use equipment designed for the measurements and procedures required by that activity.
How to compare Tudor dive-watch references
If you are choosing between Tudor models, compare the facts that affect the actual use rather than relying on a shared brand name or a number seen in a listing.

| Comparison axis | Question to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Exact reference | What is the complete reference number? | Water-resistance specifications are model-specific; two references may share a rating without being identical. |
| Manufacturer wording | Does the product page state waterproofness and mention an ISO standard? | Use the wording attached to that model. Do not transfer an ISO claim from one reference to another. |
| Timing system | Is there a secured, one-way bezel intended for elapsed dive time? | A timing bezel helps track minutes; it is not a depth display. |
| Crown design | Does the documentation require a screw-down crown, and can it be fully tightened? | An improperly seated crown undermines the intended water-resistance system. |
| Condition and service | When was the watch inspected or serviced, and has it been opened or damaged? | The current condition of seals determines whether the original rating can still be relied on. |
What to do if you are unsure
Stop before immersion if you cannot identify the reference, cannot fully secure the crown, see damage or have no confidence in the service history. The official pages provide model specifications and care instructions, not a remote diagnosis. Contact an authorized Tudor service channel and ask for the appropriate inspection or pressure testing for that exact reference.
After service, keep the paperwork with the watch. Record what was done and follow the service provider’s instructions for future water use. That documentation is more useful than assuming that a familiar 200 m marking proves the watch’s present condition.
Bottom line for a Tudor freedive
A current Tudor Black Bay 58 M7939A1A0NU-0001 is listed as waterproof to 200 m (660 ft), and its unidirectional bezel is designed to measure dive time. Those are meaningful watch specifications. They are not a depth readout, a freediving safety system or a guarantee that an individual watch remains watertight. Confirm the exact reference, screw the crown fully home, maintain the watch and treat the rating as a standardized watch test—not as your personal freediving limit.
