A Bulova Lunar Pilot can be a trail companion, but its listed features don’t establish how it will feel or perform on your hike. The answer depends on the exact reference and your experience wearing it: the US-listed 98K112, for example, has a 43.5 mm case, a chronograph, luminous hands and markers, and a 50 m water-resistance rating qualified for still-water swimming. Those specifications are useful context—not a firsthand account of an early-fall hike.
What can be said about a Lunar Pilot on a hike?
The Lunar Pilot has features that may be relevant outdoors: a chronograph for timing intervals and luminous hands and markers for reading the dial in dim conditions. Whether those features proved useful on a particular walk depends on what happened on the trail. The product specifications alone cannot establish comfort, readability in actual light, timekeeping observations, or trail performance.

Reference matters. Bulova’s US product page for reference 98K112 lists a 43.5 mm case and a 20 mm lug width. Its configuration includes a bracelet and a fitted leather strap with an easy-release system. These details describe that reference, not necessarily every Lunar Pilot.

Which Lunar Pilot specifications matter outdoors?
Size and wearing configuration
The 98K112’s 43.5 mm case is a concrete fit consideration; whether that size works for you depends on your wrist and preferences. The listed 20 mm lug width and included fitted leather strap may help identify the configuration, but do not imply that a strap change is required. Bulova’s US page for reference 98K112 gives the model-specific specifications.

Chronograph and dial
Bulova describes the 98K112 movement as high-precision quartz operating at 262 kHz. Its six-hand dial includes a 1/20 chronograph seconds counter, running seconds, and a 60-minute chronograph counter. The chronograph offers a way to time an interval; the listed functions do not show how often a hiker will need them or how easy the dial is to read while moving.
Water resistance
For the 98K112, Bulova lists WR50/5Bar/166ft and qualifies the rating as “Still Water Swimming.” That wording should not be stretched into a claim that the watch is waterproof or suited to every kind of water exposure. Bulova’s instructions give a 50-metre rating and explain that depth markings correspond to pressure testing rather than a literal recommended diving depth. The product listing and Bulova’s detailed manual provide the relevant qualifications.

- On August 2, 1971, a Bulova chronograph was worn on the moon, engineered for the demands of the lunar environment
- Now, Bulova returns to the design and updates it with an exclusive high-precision quartz movement, continuing its legacy of precision timing with the men's Bulova Lunar Pilot chronograph from the Archive Series
- Under the flat sapphire crystal, the six-hand chronograph dial is rendered in a blue-and-silver panda design, with a blue tachymeter ring and retro Bulova name
How do you use the Lunar Pilot chronograph?
Bulova’s setting instructions identify button A as the start/stop control and button B as reset. The basic sequence is:
- Press button A to start timing.
- Press button A again to stop timing.
- Press button B to reset the chronograph.
These instructions describe the controls; they do not establish that the chronograph was used on any particular hike. Check the instructions for your exact watch reference if its layout or operation differs. Bulova’s Lunar Pilot setting instructions provide the button guidance.

What an early-fall hike can—and cannot—tell you
A useful personal account needs firsthand details: the exact reference worn, how it fit over the course of the hike, whether the dial was easy to read in the light encountered, and whether the chronograph or water-resistance rating mattered. Without those observations, it would be misleading to claim the Lunar Pilot was comfortable, legible in particular conditions, or proven on the trail.
Bulova calls the 98K112 “the ideal watch for today’s explorer” and a modern interpretation of a historic timepiece. Those are manufacturer descriptions, not independent evidence of hiking suitability. Historical associations likewise do not demonstrate how a particular watch performs outdoors.
