Choose the Omega Aqua Terra 38 lacquer dial if that specific dial is what draws you in—but first confirm the exact reference and its specifications. The available evidence does not establish a universal winner, or which watch will fit your wrist better.
What is confirmed about each watch?
The comparison is uneven until the exact Aqua Terra reference is identified. Rolex’s current US product listing names the Explorer 36 as reference 124270 and specifies its materials, movement, functions and water resistance. The phrase “Aqua Terra 38 lacquer dial” does not by itself identify a verified current Omega reference, so precise Omega specifications and a direct technical comparison would be premature.

Rolex lists a smooth bezel, screw-down Twinlock crown, scratch-resistant sapphire crystal, approximately 70-hour power reserve, and stated precision of -2/+2 seconds per day after casing. It also specifies Superlative Chronometer certification, a five-link Oysterlock folding safety clasp and Easylink 5 mm comfort extension. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent comparative test results. Rolex’s official Explorer 36 listing gives the current product details.
Which dial and display suit you?
Explorer: restrained and high contrast
The Explorer’s black dial and familiar 3, 6 and 9 numerals make for a deliberately straightforward look. Rolex describes the dial as black lacquer and high contrast, and says its Chromalight display emits a long-lasting blue glow. Those descriptions come from Rolex’s 2021 Explorer newsroom announcement. The Explorer is the clearer fit if you prefer a simple, legible display over a more prominent dial finish.

Aqua Terra: choose it for the particular lacquer dial
A lacquer dial can be the deciding attraction if you enjoy its finish and presence on the wrist. One poster in a recent discussion called the Aqua Terra’s dial “gorgeous,” but that is an individual reaction, not evidence of a general consensus. Before buying, verify that the listing’s dial, size and reference are the exact configuration you mean; the model description alone is not enough to establish its technical details.
How should you compare fit and everyday use?
The nominal case sizes differ by just 2 mm: 36 mm for the verified Explorer and 38 mm in the Aqua Terra description under consideration. That number alone cannot tell you which will wear better. Wrist shape, lug dimensions, case thickness, bracelet fit and personal preference all affect how a watch sits and feels. Try both on if possible, ideally on their bracelets and in the size you intend to buy.

Think about the display you want day to day as well. The Explorer’s official listing specifies no date function, while the intended Aqua Terra configuration has not been verified here. If a date matters, check the exact Omega reference rather than assuming that every watch described as an Aqua Terra 38 has the same function.

What to verify before making the choice
- Identify the Omega reference. Match the seller’s exact reference number to the dial color, case size and bracelet or strap configuration you want.
- Compare the official specifications. On the manufacturer pages for both exact references, check case dimensions, thickness, lug dimensions, movement, date function, water resistance, certification, warranty and service arrangements.
- Check local price and availability. The Explorer’s displayed US price is not a global price or a guarantee of dealer stock. Compare current local figures only after the Omega configuration is confirmed.
- Verify the seller. Rolex says only official Rolex retailers are permitted to sell and maintain Rolex watches. Confirm a seller’s authorized status rather than treating a marketplace listing as authorized by default.
- Try both on, if practical. Compare how each watch sits, how the bracelet adjusts and whether the dial remains appealing in ordinary lighting.
Why the Explorer is 36 mm again
The Explorer returned to 36 mm in 2021 after growing to 39 mm in 2010. Rolex says the 2021 case and resized bracelet returned to the diameter of the original model launched in 1953. That history helps explain the Explorer’s compact proportions, but it does not establish that 36 mm will suit every wearer better.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. So, which would I pick?
I’d pick the Explorer 36 if I wanted a compact watch, a plain black dial and manufacturer-published specifications that are easy to verify. I’d pick the Aqua Terra if its lacquer dial were the feature I most wanted—but only after confirming the exact reference, checking its official specifications and trying it on. With the Omega identity unresolved, a firm technical winner or price comparison would go beyond what is established.
