Yes. On a Garmin fēnix 8 AMOLED, you can disable Always On Display in the general display settings. If you want the screen to turn off during recorded activities too, check the separate Activity setting.

Turn off Always On for smartwatch mode

  1. Press the upper button to open the menu.
  2. Select Settings > Display & Brightness > Always On Display.
  3. Turn Always On Display off.

Turn off Always On during activities

Activity mode has its own display setting. If the screen remains on while recording an activity after you change the general setting, turn Always On off here as well:

  1. Press the upper button to open the menu.
  2. Select Settings > Focus Modes > Activity > Display & Brightness > Always On Display.
  3. Turn Always On Display off.

What changes when you disable it?

With Always On disabled, the display turns off after the selected timeout: 4, 8, or 15 seconds, whether the watch is on or off your wrist. You can still wake the display when you want to view it.

When Always On is enabled, the watch face remains visible with its brightness and background dimmed. Garmin says this mode shortens battery life between charges and reduces display fidelity while dimmed. Its guidance does not quantify how much battery life you will gain by turning it off.
