Can You Use a Chronograph Underwater? Water Resistance and Pusher Safety

A water-resistance rating alone does not make chronograph pushers safe to press underwater. Check the exact model’s instructions; a few sealed-pusher designs are documented exceptions.

Usually, no: do not press a chronograph’s pushers while the watch is submerged unless the manufacturer expressly says the exact model is designed for underwater operation. A water-resistance rating by itself does not make submerged pusher use safe. Some chronographs are documented exceptions, so check the instructions for your watch’s specific reference.

Why the water-resistance rating is not enough

A depth or pressure marking describes water-resistance testing; it is not, on its own, permission to operate buttons underwater. Swatch explains that its bar and metre indications correspond to water-resistance testing under ISO 22810, while separately warning that crowns and pushers must never be manipulated underwater. Swatch’s technical information lists 2, 3, 10 and 20 bar indications across its models.

Citizen also cautions against pressing watch buttons underwater. Its water-resistance guidance distinguishes everyday water-resistant watches from diver’s watches, which it says comply with ISO 6425. These are manufacturer instructions; the applicable guidance for another make or model may differ.

What happens when you press a pusher underwater?

Pushers move through the watch case, so operating one underwater can challenge the seals that help keep water out. Whether a particular design can withstand that operation depends on its construction and the maker’s instructions. A screw-down pusher lock is not proof that a watch is safe to operate underwater: on many designs, the lock is intended to prevent accidental chronograph activation in water. Blancpain describes that distinction in its article about its Ocean Commitment chronographs.

Some chronographs are designed for underwater operation

There are model-specific exceptions. Blancpain says its Fifty Fathoms Chronographe Flyback and Bathyscaphe Chronographe Flyback have sealed pushers water resistant to 30 bar and may be used underwater. That statement applies to the named designs, not to chronographs generally or to every watch with a similar rating.

For reference 5200-0240-52A, Blancpain’s Bathyscaphe Chronographe Flyback product document says the sealed pushers allow chronograph use during dives to 300 metres. Treat this as the manufacturer’s specification for that model, not a general depth limit for operating chronograph pushers.

How to check your watch before swimming or diving

  1. Identify the exact reference. Find the model or reference number on the watch, its paperwork or the case, then consult the manufacturer’s instructions for that specific model.
  2. Look for explicit pusher guidance. Confirm whether the instructions expressly permit chronograph operation while submerged. A water-resistance number, a diver-style appearance or a locking mechanism does not answer that question.
  3. Check the intended activity. Confirm that the manufacturer’s guidance covers the water activity you plan, and look for any diver-watch standard or certification claim if you intend to dive.
  4. Consider condition and maintenance. Water resistance depends on the case, glass, crown, pushers and gaskets remaining intact. Swatch notes that damage to these components can compromise resistance; follow the maker’s service advice if the watch is old, damaged or overdue for attention.
  5. If permission is unclear, leave the pushers alone underwater. For dive timing, use a feature intended for underwater operation or a chronograph whose manufacturer expressly documents submerged use.

How to read bar and metre figures

Bar and metre markings are related to pressure, but they are not universal promises about how a watch may be used. Swatch connects its indications to ISO 22810 water-resistance testing; Citizen’s explanatory table equates 1 bar with the pressure of 10 metres of water. That equivalence does not guarantee that a particular watch can safely be used to that depth, much less that its pushers can be operated there. Use the maker’s stated activity guidance alongside the rating.
