Quartz and automatic chronographs both add a stopwatch to a watch, but they keep time differently. Quartz models are electronically regulated and usually battery-powered; automatic models use a mainspring wound by wrist movement and often by hand. Quartz specifications are commonly stated per month or year, while mechanical specifications are usually stated per day. Upkeep and price depend on the individual model and its maker—not just its movement type.
What makes a watch a chronograph?
A chronograph is a stopwatch function built into a watch: its timing display can be started, stopped, and reset. It is separate from the watch’s ordinary timekeeping. “Chronometer” is different: it refers to an accuracy certification designation in the cited brand guidance. Breitling’s watch-care guidance describes quartz watches as battery-powered and regulated by a quartz crystal and electronic oscillator, and mechanical watches as mainspring-driven. In an automatic mechanical watch, the wearer’s movement winds the mainspring.

Chronograph layouts and mechanisms differ by model. For example, Seiko says its 8R movement family uses a vertical clutch, column wheel, and three-pointed hammer in its chronograph construction. That is an example of one manufacturer’s architecture, not a feature of every automatic chronograph. Seiko’s 8R movement description explains those components.
How do their accuracy specifications compare?
Read the unit and the exact model specification rather than treating “quartz” or “automatic” as an accuracy guarantee. A monthly quartz figure and a daily mechanical figure are not directly comparable unless they are converted over the same period—and even then, they remain manufacturer specifications, not a promise of each watch’s actual performance.

Quartz example: Seiko SSB427
Seiko lists the quartz SSB427 at ±15 seconds per month. Its product specifications also give an approximate three-year battery life and a chronograph that times up to 60 minutes in 1/5-second increments. These are specifications for this model, not all quartz chronographs. Seiko SSB427 specifications and US listing
Automatic example: Seiko SRQ047
Seiko lists the automatic mechanical SRQ047 at +25 to -15 seconds per day, with approximately 45 hours of power reserve and 30-minute and 12-hour chronograph counters. The stated daily rate is specific to this model. Seiko notes that a mechanical watch’s actual daily rate can vary with wearing time, temperature, arm movement, and the mainspring’s winding state. Other makers publish different figures for their own watches. Breitling, for example, describes thermocompensated SuperQuartz movements in its current quartz models and gives a COSC-related tolerance for its current certified mechanical watches. Swatch also publishes accuracy ranges for its automatic models. These are brand-specific claims, not a universal range for every watch in either category. What upkeep does each movement need?
Quartz: battery and water-resistance checks
A quartz chronograph needs battery replacement; chronograph functions can use more battery power than a simpler watch. Battery life is model-specific, so use the manufacturer’s estimate for the exact reference. Maintenance may also include checking water resistance. Certina’s service description includes battery replacement where applicable and water-resistance checks. Chanel recommends battery exchange and maintenance every two years for its quartz watches to help ensure water resistance, and separately recommends movement service every five years for its quartz watches. Those are maker-specific recommendations, not a universal battery or overhaul schedule. Certina maintenance guidance and Chanel watch care and services
Automatic: winding, adjustment, and mechanical service
An automatic watch does not need a battery, but it depends on a wound mainspring. Many models can also be wound by hand. Its mechanical movement may need adjustment or service; the timing depends on the watch, its use, and the manufacturer’s guidance. Hamilton says a precise service interval cannot be set for all watches, while Chanel recommends movement service every five years for its automatic watches. Follow the instructions for the exact model rather than applying either interval to every automatic chronograph. Hamilton service guidance and Chanel watch care and services
Water resistance applies to both
Water resistance is not a permanent property of either movement type. Hamilton notes that gaskets age and that aging or accidental knocks can impair water resistance; it recommends annual water-resistance checks. Follow the maker’s guidance for your watch and have it checked after damage or when its care instructions call for it. Hamilton service guidance

How do purchase and service costs differ?
Specific manufacturer-listed prices illustrate possible differences, but they are not a controlled comparison: watches can differ in materials, finishing, design, features, brand positioning, and market pricing as well as movement. The Seiko US listings verified in 2026 price the quartz SSB427 at USD 265 and the automatic SRQ047 at USD 2,500. Those prices apply to those listed models, not to quartz and automatic chronographs as categories. SSB427 listing and SRQ047 listing

Quick Recap
Which type fits your priorities?
- Choose by the stated accuracy you need: compare the exact model’s specification and how it is expressed. The two Seiko examples show why category labels alone are not enough.
- Choose quartz if you prefer electronic timekeeping and accept battery replacement: check the model’s stated battery life and care guidance.
- Choose automatic if you prefer a mainspring-driven movement and accept its mechanical upkeep: check power reserve, winding options, accuracy specification, and the maker’s service instructions.
- Compare full ownership costs using exact quotes: include purchase price, service scope, parts, and any battery or water-resistance maintenance relevant to the model.
- Compare chronograph function as well as movement: timing range, display layout, and controls vary. The SSB427 and SRQ047, for example, have different timing displays and capabilities.
