Usually, yes—but compatibility depends on the exact watch model and the new Samsung phone’s Android version. Samsung’s published requirements cover several older Galaxy Watch generations, while some older Gear watches are no longer supported on newer Samsung phones. Check the model-specific limits before pairing, and back up the watch first: transferring it can reset some models and remove data.
Check the watch model and phone’s Android version
“Older Galaxy Watch” can mean a Galaxy Watch-family model or a legacy Gear device. Those categories have different support limits. Samsung says, “Galaxy Watch compatibility varies by model and depends on the smartphone you want to connect.” Its published requirements are a baseline, not a guarantee: a phone can meet the listed minimums and still be incompatible.

Check legacy Gear exceptions separately
Some Gear models have explicit limits on newer Samsung phones. Samsung’s compatibility page says:
- Gear, Gear2, Gear2 Neo, Gear S, and Gear Fit are unsupported on Samsung phones released in 2021 or later.
- Gear S2, Gear S3, Gear Sport, Gear Fit2, and Gear Fit2 Pro are unsupported on Samsung phones released in 2024 or later.
There is also a more specific Android-version warning for Galaxy S25 phones: Samsung says Gear Sport, Gear S2/S3, Gear Fit2, and Gear Fit2 Pro are not compatible with Galaxy phones running Android 14 or later. Transfer a supported watch to the new phone
Back up before starting. Samsung notes that reconnecting can reset the watch and remove existing data depending on the model and software version.

- Find the transfer setting on the watch: Open Settings and look for Transfer watch to new phone. Samsung places it at About watch > Transfer watch to new phone in one guide and General > Transfer watch to new phone in another; the menu path can vary by model and software.
- Confirm the transfer: Follow the on-screen instructions on the watch, then open Galaxy Wearable on the new Samsung phone and follow its setup prompts.

If Galaxy Wearable cannot find the watch
- Recheck that the exact watch model is supported by the phone’s Android version.
- Make sure Bluetooth is enabled on the phone and that both devices have current software.
- Restart the pairing process through Galaxy Wearable and follow the prompts shown for your devices.
- Do not assume a factory reset is always required. Samsung warns that some transfers can reset a watch, but the outcome depends on model and software.
Pairing compatibility does not guarantee every feature
Galaxy Watch4 and newer models use Wear OS; earlier Galaxy Watch models use Tizen. Samsung says Watch4-and-later models need a compatible phone and do not support iOS, while select earlier watches support iPhone with feature limits. For a new Samsung phone, the key distinction is still your particular watch and phone combination. Samsung also notes that features and services can vary by region and service provider, so confirm any health, payment, messaging, or carrier-dependent feature separately.
