Sometimes, but not by default. A chronograph is suitable for water only when that exact model carries a water-resistance rating that matches the activity you have in mind and its seals are in sound condition. Do not press the chronograph pushers underwater or while the watch is wet unless that model’s own instructions expressly allow it. The word “chronograph” says nothing about water suitability. The case back marking and the manufacturer’s manual decide it.
Start with the case back and the manual
Every answer depends on the specific reference, not the complication. Before a watch goes near water, work through these four checks:
- Read the water-resistance marking on the case back. Seiko’s guidance directs owners to this marking as the reference point for a given watch.
- Find the current manual for that exact model on the manufacturer’s support pages, or ask an authorized dealer for it. Note the document’s date, since guidance can change between generations of a model.
- Match your planned activity to the manufacturer’s activity table for that rating. Do not assume the table from another brand applies.
- Search the manual for any explicit statement about operating the pushers or crown underwater. If the manual is silent, treat the controls as off-limits in water.
Activity categories: what a rating is meant to cover
Manufacturers assign different activities to the same number, so ratings are only comparable within a single brand’s own chart. Casio’s water-resistance technical page, which is undated, lists the following use categories:
| Casio use category | Rating Casio assigns |
|---|---|
| Bathing, washing, showering | 5 bar |
| Swimming and snorkelling | 10 bar |
| Free-diving without equipment | 20 bar |
Seiko’s chart uses 3BAR, 5BAR, 10BAR, 15BAR, 20BAR and diver’s-watch categories, each tied to particular activities. Seiko’s categories are its own, so read them against a Seiko manual, not a Casio one.

TAG Heuer’s TH30/TH31 user guide, published in 2025, gives a general benchmark: “Generally speaking, a watch used for water sports and swimming should have at least 100 m (10 bar) water resistance.” This is the manufacturer’s guidance for its own watches. It is not a promise that every brand, model or condition will perform to that standard.
What a rating measures, and what it does not
Casio states that its ratings, which are based on DIN 8310 and ISO 22810, describe resistance to a stated static pressure in a test. A metre figure printed on the dial or case back is a pictorial representation of that test pressure. It is not an instruction to use the watch at that depth.

- Chronograph Movement with Tachymeter: Features a tachymeter index along its outer minute track to measure speed
- Stainless Steel Adjustable Bracelet: Stainless steel bracelet fits comfortably on your wrist and can be adjusted for a custom fit
- Sturdy Stainless Steel Watch Case: Sleek and scratch-resistant stainless steel
- Iconic 60's Design: This timepiece retains the classic Marlin features with a domed acrylic crystal lens and retro-style square markers at 3, 9, and 12 o'clock
- Water Resistant to 50 Meters
Casio also points out that moving through water, such as swimming strokes or impact against the surface, can produce dynamic pressure that goes beyond the static test. This is why a watch that handles a rinse under the tap or a pool swim can still be the wrong tool for a dive. Do not infer diving suitability from a depth marking alone.
Chronograph pushers and the crown underwater
The pushers are the part most likely to be used at the wrong time, and the manufacturers are consistent about them. Treat underwater operation as prohibited unless the model’s manual says otherwise. The official wording from several brands is:
Rank #3
- MEN'S WRISTWATCH BAND: Black, durable stainless steel bracelet; links can be removed for a customized fit on these men's watches
- CASE & MOVEMENT: This black watch for men features a 50mm case, 24mm band width, scratch resistant mineral crystal, accurate quartz movement with chronograph analog watch display, imported
- MATTE STYLE: From an inky matte dial to brushed jet steel, Nate gives the all-black trend new depth. Use it to dress up your pair of denim and a crisp, white tee; this men's watch also features a chronograph movement on a stainless steel bracelet
- DIAL: This wrist watch for men has a round black stainless steel case with a black matte dial and gray accents
- WATER RESISTANT FOSSIL WATCH: A men's watch with water resistance up to 50m (165ft); wearable for short periods of recreational swimming and showering, but not diving or snorkeling; 5 ATM
- Breitling: “Never activate the chronograph pushers underwater or when the watch is wet.”
- Hanhart: “Do not operate the chronograph pushers under water. Otherwise, the ingress of water into the movement cannot be completely ruled out.”
- Patek Philippe says it suggests users “do not use the function controls (pushers, correctors, time setting crown) underwater or when the watch is still wet.”
- TAG Heuer’s FAQ states: “Do not operate the pushers underwater.”
Breitling identifies dedicated patented magnetic pusher systems as an exception on particular watches. Do not assume that an ordinary chronograph pusher is sealed for use in water because the watch has a high rating. The crown should also stay fully screwed down before any water exposure, and it should not be pulled or adjusted while the watch is wet or submerged.
Seals age, and impacts can damage them
A water-resistance rating describes the watch as tested, not as it is today. Gaskets deteriorate over time, and a knock can affect the sealing parts even when the glass and case look intact. Consider the watch’s age, any impact history and its service history before relying on the marked rating.
Rank #4
- Stainless steel case 45mm diameter x 12.5mm thick; Silver dial; Luminous hands
- Japanese quartz movement, VD53 Caliber; Assembled in Japan; SR920SW battery included; Watch weight: 195 grams
- Stainless steel band, 195mm L x 22mm W; Band is adjustable by adding/removing links; Fold over push button clasp
- Flame Fusion crystal; Push/pull crown; Uni-directional stainless steel bezel; Functional Subdials: 60min, 60sec, 24hr; 100 meter water resistant: Suitable for recreational surfing, swimming, snorkeling, sailing and water sports. Not suitable for diving.
Service intervals differ by brand. TAG Heuer recommends a water-resistance check every two years for watches that are regularly exposed to water. Breitling recommends annual service for extensive water use. Use your own maker’s current recommendation, and ask an authorized service center or qualified watchmaker to test the seals if you are unsure of the watch’s condition.

Breitling warns that water can irreparably damage leather and textile straps, and it suggests considering rubber or metal for water activities. A replacement strap changes only the band, not the case’s resistance, and it must fit the specific watch’s lug width and attachment. A new rubber strap does not make an unsuitable chronograph suitable for swimming.

After exposure to water
Seiko advises washing a water-resistant watch used in ocean water with fresh water and drying it with a soft cloth. TAG Heuer also recommends rinsing after saltwater exposure. Both instructions apply only where the manufacturer permits washing for that model. Never rinse or wash a watch with the crown pulled out, and do not press the pushers while you clean it.
Decision guide
- The case back marking matches your activity and the manual is current: the watch can be worn in the water for that activity, with the pushers and crown untouched.
- The manual explicitly permits pusher operation underwater: follow that model’s stated procedure exactly. Do not generalise it to other chronographs.
- The manual is silent on pushers, or the marking is unreadable: keep the watch dry. Do not treat it as water-rated.
- The watch is old, has been struck, or was taken underwater by accident while the pushers were pressed: have an authorized service center or qualified watchmaker check the seals before the next water exposure.
Use the brand’s own documents to settle any remaining doubt. The general rule holds across brands, but the exact permissions do not.
