Some metal watch bracelets can be shortened at home, but the method depends entirely on how that bracelet is fastened. There is no single procedure that works across brands or models. Identify the link system first, check the watch maker’s instructions for your exact watch, and stop as soon as the maker calls for special tools or a professional.
Start by identifying the link system
Before you touch a tool, look at the underside and edges of the links. The bracelet type determines which instructions apply, and bracelets that look alike can be built differently.
Pin-style links
Orient Watch USA’s guide, “How to Adjust a Watch Bracelet” (dated 17 September 2026 on its page), describes a pin-style bracelet with arrows marked on it, and notes that some pins have collars. The collar is a small retaining part, so note whether your pins have one before you start.
Model-specific link-removal systems
Seiko publishes a separate set of instructions for its new link-removal system. Those instructions are written for that system, so follow them rather than a general pin method. If your watch uses a link system that Seiko documents, its procedure takes priority over anything in this guide.

Screw-secured links and spring-bar clasps
Garmin’s owner’s manual for the MARQ Aviator (Gen 2) describes removing screws to take out links and making micro-adjustments to the clasp through its spring bar. These steps apply to that bracelet only. Other metal bracelets from Garmin or other brands may use different fasteners.
Check the fit before you remove any links
Orient recommends putting the watch on your wrist and pinching the bracelet to estimate how many links need to come out. Make this estimate with the watch on. A bracelet lying flat on a table does not show how it sits when worn, so a flat measurement is a poor guide to how much to remove.

Remove the same number of links from each side
Orient recommends removing a near-equal number of links from both sides of the bracelet to keep the clasp balanced. Garmin’s MARQ Aviator (Gen 2) manual makes the same point, stating that equal link removal on both sides helps keep the watch centered. Count the links you plan to remove on each side before you start, so you do not drift from one side to the other.
Pin-style method, step by step
The steps below follow the pin-style method in Orient’s guide. Confirm that your bracelet is pin-style before using them.

- Find the arrow marking that shows the direction the pin moves. Note the direction before you push anything.
- Put the watch on your wrist and pinch the bracelet to estimate how many links to remove. Mark an equal number of links on each side.
- Place the bracelet in a band holder so the link you are working on is held steady.
- Use the pin tool to push the pin in the direction of the arrow. If the pin has a collar, keep the collar with the pin. Orient lists a hammer among the tools for this method, but the guide does not describe that step in detail, so use it only as the guide indicates.
- Remove the link section. Reinstall the pin in the opposite direction from the one you pushed it.
- Repeat on the other side. Then put the watch on, check the fit against your estimate, and check that the clasp sits evenly.
Work where small parts can be recovered. Pins and collars are easy to lose on a hard floor, so a tray or a cloth on a table is a practical precaution.
Nixon EU’s guide to cotter-pin bracelets also describes the pin direction and the use of a pin tool and holder. It supports the same logic for that bracelet type, but check your bracelet against that guide before assuming the steps match.

When to stop and use a professional
Stop and use a professional, a watchmaker, or the place of purchase in any of these cases:
- The maker’s instructions for your watch call for special tools you do not have.
- The maker recommends a professional for that bracelet, as Garmin does for its metal bracelet.
- You cannot tell which fastening system the bracelet uses.
- The pin, collar, or screw will not move in the direction the instructions describe.
Garmin’s manual states: “Garmin® recommends you take your watch to a jeweler or other professional to adjust the length of the metal bracelet.” Casio’s FAQ states: “In order to prevent damage to band components, possible personal injury, and other problems, take your watch to the place where you purchased it to have the band size adjusted.” Both statements come from the companies’ published guidance, not from a named individual.

Manufacturer guidance and construction differ by model, so the owner’s manual or the maker’s instructions for your exact watch should govern every step.
