The Cartier Drive de Cartier Moon Phases is the reference to seek if you want the Drive’s shaped case and a moon-phase display at 6 o’clock: the steel version is WSNM0008, and the rose-gold version is WGNM0008. Its silvered, Roman-numeral dial keeps the complication from overwhelming the design. Felix Scholz’s 2017 hands-on review praised the watch’s elegance and moon phase, while singling out the prominent “automatic” text as his main reservation. For today’s buyer, it is best approached as a pre-owned watch: confirm the exact reference and the individual example’s condition before judging value.
Which Cartier Drive is the Moon Phases?
Look for reference WSNM0008 in steel or WGNM0008 in rose gold (also described in launch reporting as pink gold). These are the Moon Phases models. Do not confuse them with WSNM0005: that is a different Drive with a second time zone, day/night display, large date and calibre 1904-FUSEAU MC, not the moon-phase watch. WatchCharts’ WSNM0005 page concerns that separate reference.
Cartier’s official WGNM0008 user guide is another reference-specific point of confirmation. When searching listings, compare the number on the watch and its documentation rather than relying on a seller’s generic “Drive Moonphase” title.
How the watch looks and wears
The steel WSNM0008 has a silvered flinqué dial, Roman numerals, blued-steel sword hands and a moon-phase display at 6 o’clock. The complication is easy to notice, but the rest of the dial remains recognizably restrained Cartier. Its case is rectangular in presentation, so it is more useful to retain the listed dimensions than to describe it simply as a 41 mm round watch.

Watches of Switzerland UK’s WSNM0008 product record lists the steel case as 40 mm long by 41 mm wide and 12.15 mm thick. It also specifies a sapphire crystal and case back, black semi-matte alligator strap and an 18 mm steel folding buckle. Strap condition and fit matter on a pre-owned example; confirm whether the strap and buckle are original rather than assuming they are.
Movement and moon-phase indication
Both surfaced material variants use Cartier automatic calibre 1904-LU MC. Contemporary reporting gives it a 48-hour power reserve and a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour. Those figures describe the published specification, not a measurement of a particular second-hand watch. A seller should be able to explain when the watch was last serviced and whether the movement and complication operate correctly.

The long interval often associated with this moon phase needs careful wording. Time+Tide’s 2017 review says adjustment is needed only every 125 years; launch coverage describes the indication as requiring a one-day correction after 125 years. This is a published model claim, not an independently verified test result. It does not remove the need to set the display correctly when acquiring a watch or to follow Cartier’s instructions for operating its particular mechanism.

What the hands-on review thought
Felix Scholz’s Time+Tide review, published 22 April 2017, reads the Moon Phases as an elegant extension of the Drive design and expresses particular affection for the complication. His main complaint was the conspicuous “automatic” wording on the dial. His conclusion—“the Drive de Cartier Moon Phase is perhaps my favourite in the rapidly expanding family”—is Scholz’s personal assessment, not a claim of general consensus.
The dial text is a matter of taste: it is worth inspecting photographs or the watch itself closely if that detail is likely to distract you. The review also gives a 41 mm width and 12.15 mm height; the retailer’s 40 by 41 mm listing supplies the more complete rectangular dimensions.

What to check before buying pre-owned
Availability and asking prices can change, and a single listing is not a market valuation. When accessed, the Watches of Switzerland UK listing showed the steel WSNM0008 at £8,550 and marked it “Out of Stock”; that is a retailer listing snapshot, not a current transaction price or evidence of present availability. The surfaced results do not establish current stock or a representative price for either reference.
Before committing to an individual watch, ask the seller for evidence that addresses the specific example:
- Reference and identity: verify WSNM0008 or WGNM0008 on the watch and check that paperwork, if supplied, corresponds to it. Rule out WSNM0005 if you specifically want the Moon Phases.
- Condition and originality: inspect the case, crystal, dial and hands, and ask whether any parts have been replaced. Confirm the strap and buckle’s identity and condition.
- Operation: ask for a demonstration that time-setting and the moon-phase indication work as expected. Avoid forcing or adjusting the mechanism without the correct instructions.
- Service record: request dated service documentation and clarify what was done. If there is no record, treat service status as unknown rather than assuming the watch is ready to wear.
- Transaction terms: get the seller’s return window, any warranty coverage and its exclusions in writing before payment.
