What changed in the Santos-Dumont XL?
The change was the movement: the 2019 Santos-Dumont release discussed by Time+Tide was quartz-powered, while the XL mechanical version introduced in 2020 uses manual winding and Cartier calibre 430 MC. Cartier’s regional product pages for XL mechanical references also identify the 430 MC and give the same case dimensions and thickness, though specifications vary by reference.
Time+Tide reported the XL mechanical case at 46.6 × 33.9 mm and 7.5 mm thick—an increase of 0.2 mm over the 2019 quartz references. Those figures describe the reported XL versions; they should not be generalized to every Santos-Dumont size or reference.
How did Cartier fit a mechanical movement into the case?
Time+Tide reported that the 430 MC movement is 2.15 mm thick. That slim movement helps explain how Cartier could add manual winding while keeping the case profile close to that of the quartz XL. The 2.15 mm movement thickness is a figure reported by Time+Tide in 2020; the Cartier product-page information reviewed corroborates the calibre and manual winding, but not that measurement.

The article also reported an approximately 38-hour power reserve. In practical terms, a watch that has stopped will need to be wound again, and a wearer who takes it off for longer than its remaining reserve should expect to reset it before wearing. The reserve figure is approximate and attributed to Time+Tide’s 2020 article, rather than independently confirmed by the official product-page information.
What does the mechanical XL look like?
Time+Tide described a solid caseback, exposed bezel screws and a crown topped with a cabochon. The dial details include Roman numerals, a railroad minute track and blued sword-shaped hands. Its author praised the slim profile and downward-tapering lugs; that is an aesthetic and wearing impression, not a guarantee of fit on every wrist.

The comparison is deliberately limited to what the cited 2020 account establishes. It does not supply an absolute thickness for the quartz references, so the 0.2 mm difference should not be used to calculate or claim a quartz case measurement.

Time+Tide said the 2020 manual-wind XL would be offered in three material configurations and reported these launch prices, with a May launch planned. They are historical euro prices, not current retail prices or confirmation that any version is currently available.
