The Santos de Cartier is the sportier, more visibly technical of the two: a square case with exposed screws and an aviation origin story. “Tank” is not a single watch but a family of rectangular models, including the Tank Must, Tank Louis Cartier, Tank Américaine and Tank Française, and the members differ enough in size and proportion that the family name alone cannot settle the question. For most readers, the deciding factors are the exact reference, its case length and thickness, and how it sits on their own wrist under a cuff.
Two designs with different origins
Both collections come with a founding story from Cartier itself, and both stories are useful for understanding why the watches look the way they do. They are the brand’s own accounts, not independently verified history.
The Tank
Cartier’s Tank collection page states that the Tank was created by Louis Cartier, who designed it after the tanks of the First World War battlefields. The line’s defining language includes flat vertical brancards, the sides that run from the case to the strap or bracelet, and a sapphire cabochon. Cartier describes the collection as having evolved since its creation in 1917, which is why the family now spans several distinct lines rather than one fixed profile.
The Santos
Cartier’s Santos history says Louis Cartier imagined the Santos de Cartier for his friend, the aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont, so that he could tell the time while flying. Cartier presents it as one of the first modern wristwatches designed specifically to be worn on the wrist. The square case and exposed screws are the visual signature that carries through the collection.

How the two families differ in practice
The table below sets out what Cartier’s official pages establish for each family. Where a value depends on a specific reference, the cell says so rather than generalising.
| Feature | Santos de Cartier | Tank family |
|---|---|---|
| Defining shape | Square case with exposed screws | Rectangular case with flat vertical brancards |
| Range of models | Small, medium and large sizes | Several lines: Tank Must, Tank Louis Cartier, Tank Américaine, Tank Française |
| Movement | Automatic models use calibre 1847 MC; other references vary (not stated for every reference) | Varies by line and reference (not stated in a single family-wide value) |
| Strap or bracelet | Interchangeable straps and bracelets on several models | Configurations vary by model |
| Typical look | Bold, angular, sporty | Linear, rectilinear, classic |
Size and wrist fit
Cartier’s catalogue gives dimensions for each reference, and two examples show how far apart the families can be. A large titanium Santos de Cartier is listed at 47 × 39.8 mm and 9.4 mm thick. A Tank Louis Cartier is listed at 29.5 × 22.0 mm. These are two specific models, not a size comparison of the families, and the cases are shaped differently, so the numbers should not be read as a verdict on fit.

- Stainless Steel Case and Band, Push Button Release Clasp

| Model (as listed by Cartier) | Case dimensions | Thickness |
|---|---|---|
| Large titanium Santos de Cartier | 47 × 39.8 mm | 9.4 mm |
| Tank Louis Cartier | 29.5 × 22.0 mm | Not stated in the source reviewed |
Cartier does not publish universal wrist-fit rules, and nothing in its catalogue supports a cutoff such as “small wrists should buy a Tank.” Fit is a property of the specific reference on a specific wrist.
What to check before choosing
- Case length across the wrist. Width matters, but length is what usually makes a rectangular or square case look too large or too small. Compare the listed length of the exact reference with your wrist width.
- Thickness under a cuff. A thicker case, such as the 9.4 mm large titanium Santos listed by Cartier, sits differently under a shirt cuff than a slimmer piece.
- Visual prominence. The Santos’s angular case and exposed screws draw more attention than most Tank references. Decide whether that suits your wardrobe.
- Bracelet or strap. On the Santos, interchangeable options on several models can change how the watch wears as much as the case does. Tank configurations vary by model, so check what the reference you are considering includes.
- The exact line and size. Confirm the Tank subfamily and the Santos size before comparing dimensions, because the same family name covers very different cases.
Trying the watch on, if you can, remains the most reliable test. Cartier boutiques and authorised retailers are the places to do it.

Price context
Cartier’s US collection pages cover a wide range of options, so neither family has a single entry price. At the time of the catalogue listings consulted for this comparison, a steel, medium, automatic Santos de Cartier was listed at $7,750, and steel Tank Must references were listed between $3,600 and $4,250 depending on configuration. Gold versions, complications and other lines in both families sit at substantially different price levels. The listings were not dated in the source, so treat these figures as indicative and confirm current prices on Cartier’s US site before deciding.

If you want a bold, technical look
The Santos fits this brief. Its square case and exposed screws are its identity, and the interchangeable straps and bracelets on several models let you adjust the feel. Check the thickness and length of the specific size first, because the larger references are the most prominent.

If you want clean, rectilinear lines
The Tank family fits this brief, and its brancards and sapphire cabochon give it a different character from the Santos. The choice between Tank lines is mostly a question of size and proportion, so compare the exact references rather than the family.
If size comes first
Start with the case dimensions and thickness of the shortlisted references, then choose the style. Model sizes differ enough that a size-first approach can rule out one family before style is even considered.

The verdict
Choose the Santos de Cartier if the square, screw-detailed design is the point and you are comfortable with a larger, more prominent case. Choose a Tank if the rectangular, brancard-led look is what you want. In both cases the reference decides fit: the exact case length, thickness and bracelet or strap should settle the question. This comparison draws on Cartier’s published catalogue and brand history and does not include a hands-on wear test.
